  1. Absolutely. I'd also add, that a lot of times when Gibson was "off," he wasn't really that off. He was just being a contact pitcher and achieving the mixed results that are the nature of the beast.
  2. I could see the Tribe ripping off 100 wins and running away with the division. They look primed to explode IMO
  3. Still looks like he's moving his head though, doesn't it?
  4. Yeah, lots of good 2Bs in the AL right now. You could make a case for ranking them about a hundred different ways.
  5. Therefore Joe Mauer should swing less than Adam Dunn. Mauer isn't a power hitter, and never has been. When you accept this then Mauer's approach makes perfect sense. It maximizes output from a skillset that's frankly more limited than people think. Certainly more limited than Dunn's. Consider, in 2012, Mauer needed 98 swings to hit a home run. He needed 3.0 to produce an out. Dunn needed 29 swings to hit a home run, and 2.8 to produce an out. Two different batters, two very different swing-take equations. If anything, its remarkable the results were so similar. It just shows how incredibly good at collecting hits Mauer was, and how incredibly bad at collecting everything that wasn't a K, BB, or HR Dunn was. They're a fun tandem to compare.
  6. The article did touch on his swing% He was among the leaders in pitches / PA last year. Maybe he could stand to be more aggressive.
  7. As I understand it, Sano's long term position isn't sealed at third. And behind him there isn't anyone banging down the door. Plouffe could be traded. He's also coming off a broken arm. I think there's room for more depth there and it doesn't change the fact that continuing to pound away teaching Pinto to catch seems like a lost cause. A bat first backup catcher is only worth about, well, Sean Gilmartin.
  8. Yeah that's the other thing. Batting average? Weak. 3B or 1B? I know its easier said than done. I have more hope for a fresh start at a new position than for Pinto to suddenly figure out catcher after 9 years of not cutting it.
  9. I wonder what its going to take with Pinto to stop the Twins squandering the most productive years of his career. Newsflash, he'll be 26 next month. If he can't catch now, he's never going to catch. Put him somewhere else.
  10. Parker, fans and the Twins have been talking about trying to get Mauer to pull the ball and hit for more power for a while now. I can't find the quotes but I remember last spring there was actually some talk from Gardy and the FO about it. In your estimation, did Mauer try pulling the ball more last year?
  11. Every year they feed us that "competition" line. Last year Swarzak was in the mix. The year before, Duensing. My guess is they say that and then give those guys "starts" in split squad spring training when the only purpose is to get them innings and make the other guys ponder the notion. Its a bluff.
  12. Another team that you wonder will they call James Shields. Danks is washed up and Noesi does not inspire a lot of confidence. Without Shields there would be a lot riding on Rodon and the health of the front 3. Unless there's someone else in the wings I'm not considering.
  13. There's a tool at the bottom of the page where you plug in the basic stats for a player (Age, league, PA, AB, 2B, 3B, HR, BB, SO) and it outputs similar seasons and bust rates. For Mauer the bust% is 85.7%. 75.0% for Buxton using his GCL figures. The sample of similar seasons is quite small (7 and 4) compared to Gordon (239)
  14. 94.3% bust rate of all players in Rookie ball. Dunno about 1st round picks in Rookie ball, specifically. I assume the average bust% for 1st rounders is lower than the overall by a lot. edit: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2014/7/15/5871621/mlb-prospects-k-bb-iso-javier-yearly
  15. Serious question. 84.5% bust for players who did what Gordon did in the Appy league at the age he did it, according to JAVIER.
  16. Question: If the draft were done-over today, would Gordon crack the 1st round?
  17. I liked Jackson, Holmes, Toussaint, and was coming around on Freeland. Scouts make way too much of bloodlines IMO.
  18. I'd love to say yes this is the year he sticks as a regular but, based on what? A .738 line in Rochester? A .220/.381/.280 triple slash in Venezuela?
  19. I'll take Pinto in limited action. .240/.290/.475 in 350 PAs
  20. The Tigers have sort of flip flopped. Now the rotation is top heavy but the lineup looks pretty damn deep to me. Davis/Gose Kinsler Cabrera Martinez Cespedes Martinez Castellanos Avilla Iglesias with a rotation Price Verlander Sanchez Greene Simon/Farmer/?
  21. I gotta think if Shields is still around this spring the Tigers will call. 1, maybe two starts by Alfredo Simon ought to do it.
  22. Vargas recorded the first and 9th hardest hit balls of the year against lefthanders (the 120 mph shot off Kazmir and the 117 mph shot off Doolittle). As of Aug 9, that was after over 100,000 records. Vargas cracked the top ten twice in his 8th game on the job. I don't know what you saw but IMO that is not a guy I want sitting. Ever.
  23. I think Reusse has sticker shock. The FA outlays have come with the free money from ESPN and MLBAM. Not to mention that payroll is still lower than it was 5 seasons ago while the rest of baseball has chugged along at ~13% inflation. 171m is just not that much money anymore. And I know Reusse is at war with math but even he should realize that 230 PAs (101 against southpaws) is nothing to platoon a guy over. Certainly not a switch hitter whose minor league splits (1300 PAs) are almost nil.
  24. I expect the Royals to take a big step back too. Gordon and Cain look like regression candidates. Gordon in the defensive runs saved dept. and Cain in the BABIP area. No power from the infielders, or anywhere really. The possible exception maybe is Moustakas. The way he finished last year, you wonder something finally clicked. And the loss of Shields is going to hurt. Duffy and Zimmer both have shoulder issues and there is not much upside left except Ventura. I suspect he needs to get familiar with the top of the zone to reach his potential.
  25. That's how you have to start the year, IMO. Let it ride for 6 weeks and re-evaluate based on what Hicks is doing in Rochester and what regression is or isn't doing to Escobar / Santana.
