  1. Ugh, crap. The Vegas lines are uncannily accurate. If it says we're going in the wrong direction, that's pretty sobering.
  2. "See kiddo, this is how you flip a bat."
  3. http://i.imgur.com/gMhfLE0.gif Next!
  4. The players wouldn't sign off. A 12 second clock? They tried a 20 second clock in the AFL and the players universally hated it. 12 seconds is nothing. It might be a small change but it would never pass. Besides if MLB is going to get out the red ink they can do a lot better than a clock.
  5. I thought the whole appeal was that no rule change would be required?
  6. I assume both conditions must be met. Which is why I'm wondering how much time is actually spent in violation of the rule.
  7. I think you have that backwards. The 12 seconds countdown begins after, not before, the batter has stepped into the box and is "alert to the pitcher."
  8. By the way, how often do pitchers actually violate rule 8.04? How much time is spent in violation of the rule every game? Has anyone come up with those numbers?
  9. The batter can step out if (i) The batter swings at a pitch; (ii) The batter is forced out of the batter's box by a pitch; (iii) A member of either team requests and is granted Time; (iv) A defensive player attempts a play on a runner at any base; (v) The batter feints a bunt; (vi) A wild pitch or passed ball occurs; (vii) The pitcher leaves the dirt area of the pitching mound after receiving the ball; or (viii) The catcher leaves the catcher's box to give defensive signals.
  10. I'm aware of the rule, I don't remember a time where it was widely enforced which is what Brock seems to be suggesting. In fact in the only two instances mentioned by the article, enforcement lead to delays because opposing managers thought they were being selectively targeted. The only way to enforce the rule without causing manager objection is to go full hog with a shot clock on everyone. So while the rule is on the books the reality is that it would change the way the game's been played since... well when was the last era where the rule was widely enforced? Ever?
  11. Really? They called balls and strikes after 12 seconds?
  12. For starters, runs per game are well within the historical band of normal. Who decided we need more offense? Is that really what people want? Re: game times, a shot clock seems awfully crude. If the goal is to reduce pitch times then isolate what's causing the delays, and address those directly to keep the collateral damage to a minimum. Off the top of my head, these are possible contributors to increasing pitch times that have nothing to do with pitchers staring down batters or a hitter adjusting his gloves * Pickoff throws * Sign coding and re-coding, mound visits by catchers * visits by pitching coaches * Walk up music * Umpires shuttling body armor * Fresh balls that need to be re-rubbed
  13. I was impressed by May too. He has to pitch better out of the stretch if he's going to eat innings though. Its strange because it was not an issue in 2012-2013 but he just got hammered last year.
  14. What if he makes Duensing, Stauffer, et. look bad?
  15. http://tinyirony.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/4lloyd-xmas-take-21.jpg?w=535&h=330
  16. I think people need to take another look at Santana's minor league stats. He has been very stead since 2012. I expect him to regress but the landing could be soft. Something in the .725-.750 range seems reasonable to me.
  17. That's an interesting case but nobody triples their walk rate jumping A to AA unless there's something else going on. I know a groin injury was in there somewhere but I imagine there were other issues. In lieu of more examples, is there a study or any kind of research on this topic of increasing BB rates jumping from A to higher level do to hitters having better plate discipline?
  18. Interesting. Maybe that's one case. Its probably worth noting he put up a 7.7% walk rate in limited MLB action following that spike in AA-AAA.
  19. Are college and A-ball walk rates that unreliable?
  20. I've never heard of players hiding command issues in college or A ball. Can anyone site an example?
  21. Its on the books like mixed marriage laws in Alabama are on the books. To start enforcing it now would change the whole pace and feel of the game, for the worse I believe.
  22. I just hope MLB works obvious-to-obscure and not the other way around. Start by improving replay and eliminating the patriotic circle jerks, before messing with a 3-PA minimum for reliver or eliminating defensive shifts(?), shot clock, etc.
  23. 3rd year arb contract for Brian f-ing Duensing. Ye of 4.0 career FIP.
  24. Whether you look at it from a fantasy perspective or a fan perspective, this is not a very promising bullpen IMO: CL Glen Perkins SU Casey Fien LHRP Brian Duensing LHRP Caleb Thielbar RHRP Tim Stauffer Especially since some of these guys are standing in the same line: RHP Mike Pelfrey RHP Alex Meyer RHP Trevor May LHP Tommy Milone RHRP Ryan Pressly RHRP Michael Tonkin RHRP J.R. Graham LHRP A.J. Achter LHRP Logan Darnell RHRP Lester Oliveros RHRP Stephen Pryor LHRP Aaron Thompson RHRP Mark Hamburger RHRP Nick Burdi RHRP Jake Reed
  25. Certainly didn't help. Gibson's a GB pitcher though. GBs have a higher BABIP than FB's, that might explain some of the FIP-ERA spread. In any case, unless he figures out a way to strike out more batters I don't see why he deserves a leg up on any of the 5th starter candidates.
