  1. That's harsh and untrue. No one player costs a team a division. He doesn't refuse to take care of his body. He plays all out. I respect him for that and so does almost everyone else.
  2. Give Francona credit. He skippered a MASH unit into first place. I had said the Twins shoulda fired Gardy a year sooner and we could have signed Tito. He, more than any other reason, is why Cleveland is so tough to beat. Hats off to him.
  3. I usually agree with Doc. I don't really disagree here. But he reminded me of something Jim Bouton said in "Ball Four". They went over the Twins hitters and decided to pitch the first 5 batters underground. No that's not it. Oh Yeah. he said Rod Carew came late to the stadium from his National Guard duty and dressed quickly to get to the field. He got a hit and his fly was still unzipped. It is just 1 game folks. I don't disagree with the call. Rocco is the best rookie manager since TK. Our guy has been blooded in battle, and right away. Just watch him make it up to us.
  4. Yeah, I know. But Rocco is a rookie manager. He will learn. And all this cost us was 1 game. Still, you ain't wrong.
  5. Funny how we want Sano to use the whole field, (which he did today to good effect) and Buck too, (mainly because of his speed if he hits it in the RCF gap, its a triple) but we want Max to pull it. It is still hit the ball where it is pitched though, because the first rule of hitting is "Get a Good Pitch to hit" .....Ted When it comes to power hitting, the first rule should be "Hit it on the Sweet Spot" With Max, when he hits it, you know it is gone. I am amazed that Max has such a keen hitting eye with his inexperience. He hits it on the nose a lot. Glad they extended him.
  6. When I managed I had a saying: "You win the game you're in." That is especially true in the playoffs. Its a variation on the old "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" saying. A manager has to manage. That means playing hunches. I have changed my mind about who I was going to brig in to pitch on my way to the mound to pull my starter. Rocco made the right call because it worked. He had a hunch that Rogers would not be needed Sunday with Jose starting. Plus he was already warmed up. Good call.
  7. Hard to please much, or what? He is the AL starting All Star SS.
  8. Jorge is just getting better and better. Glad the Twins signed him long term. Now, Eddie,Buck, Jose.....
  9. Sure. And I don't think that you can really say that he hasn't learned anything since then. He is a much better pitcher now than he was then. A lot of that is confidence and command. Almost every MLB pitcher started as a starter. Every major leaguer was the stud pitcher of his high school or college team. Starter #1. But the transition between starter and reliever is more fluid than people realize. Santana started in the BP. So did Frankie. Dennie Eckersly started off as a starter. He was a pretty good starter. But he was a great reliever. We don't see transitions from BP to starter as much. It is outside the box thinking. Rogers' best weapon is his ability to hit spots and use pin point control (which means that he can hit the mitt most of the time). That translates well into a starter role. The question is, will it hold up the third time through the order? I got to thinking about this when I considered the relative cost of adding a SP versus a couple BP arms. You can get two solid BP arms for less than what you pay for a stud starter. So if you can get a guy already on the team and under contract to be a starter, why not try it? Spend the money for two better BP arms. I think Rogers has shown that he can dominate batters. But the FO has to compare whether he is more useful pitching 3 times a week for one or two innings versus every 5 days for 6 innings.
  10. Well, I hear you. But saying a pitcher only has two pitches is kind of like telling someone what their ceiling is. Don't most pitchers throw a change up, slider, curve and fastball, to varying degrees of success? Don't most pitchers have a fastball, curve and change coming out of high school? Aren't the slider and cutter just a slight variation off the 2 seam fastball? A little more torque and different release. Maybe the reason he relies on his best pitches is because he often comes into a game in a high leverage situation. No room for error. Stretch him out as a starter and he will have more opportunity to throw waste pitches and face batters with bases empty. It is just an idea.
  11. I don't accept that at all. He gets people out in high leverage situations and many thought he should be an all star. And you you say he isn't good enough to be a starter?
  12. Good piece Nick Has anybody else thought Taylor Rogers could be a 1-2 starter? No need to trade for a SP. Just give him a shot. Sign 2 relievers and move him to SP and Perez to the pen. He might be a 20 game winner next year. Think about Berrios, Rogers, Odo as our big 3 in the playoffs. They'll never do it... but should think about it. As for my random comments on stuff Nick raised. Sano's success started when he stopped trying to pull everything. Same story Buck. Keps is not a leadoff hitter. He is a great #6. Buck needs to get that job now that he has shown he can stick. 3 years ago many of us said, "Let the kids play." They ain't bad. Youth is good. Several years ago when he left Boston I wanted the Twins to sign Francona. They'd have had to show Gardy the gate a year early, but we could have avoided that whole Molitor thing. Tito will have his team ready, injuries notwithstanding. He isn't going to concede anything. I think the Twins have their work cut out for them. Bring it on. Its nice to be in a pennant race again.
  13. I hope Carlos beats this. Life is short enough as it is. May he have God's grace shine on him and his family through this struggle.
  14. I think Odorizzi wants to come back. He has said so, if I remember correctly. This coaching staff has led him to his best year ever. He might like the idea of more of that. Gibson is just one of those good guys who is loyal to an organization. But the organization has forced him into arbitration when it normally tries to settle with players. Perez and Big Mike, I am not so sure. Maybe Pineda will feel some love for a team that paid him to recover from an arm injury. Perez is the one I think will move on to greener pastures. But he has to get back what he had in the beginning of the year to create a demand.
  15. I have a simple formula Good pick plus bad throw equals second base. GP + BT = 2B Most bad throws are rushed throws. Sometimes you are better off just holding the ball and calling time.
  16. I would like to see fewer articles like this..... many fewer.
  17. Wrong. When a reliever gives up a homer and then a hard hit ball he doesn't have it. It was the right move to pull him. You go with what works.
  18. Miggie needs to get back to basics. He pulls his head a lot. Maybe get him to hit the ball up the middle for a while might help with that.
  19. Hey, if it was our slogan then, why can't it still be our slogan now? Its not like we are stealing a nickname from the Brewers?
  20. You said that with a big Paul Bunyan smile, I bet. Yeah, we are all smiling these days. May stats don't really matter though, do they. Its nice to have a nice start, but that's all it is. Still, its been so long since the Twins fielded a dominant lineup that its nice to be able to criticize the tiniest little things.
