  1. Let's not act like Houston or the Cubs got that great of prospects, even though the Cubs had the better chip in Dempster. Houston is going to be a brutal team for at least the next three years, possibly longer. They didn't really have a choice, but they better hope everything goes right or it could be multiple cycles. Twins have a better major league team and a better farm system than both of these teams, it is not necessarily a great comparison.
  2. Minimal difference for Buxton and Benson at this point. Kepler and Roberts I can get behind. Ray I'm indifferent.
  3. Why would people care if Buxton is in GCL or Appy this year? If he gets to Beloit that is interesting. All he needs is reps for the rest of the year, either league is fine.

If the Twins were trading only for prospects I think you are correct. However, I think the Twins want to trade Span for someone who will be in their rotation at the start of next year, be controllable for multiple seasons, and be more than a backend starter. That is really difficult for a team to part with in the middle of the season - if they had a pitcher that good they would already be in their rotation and wouldn't want to create one hole to fill a different one. In the offseason it works because you can trade a pitcher and fill that hole either through free agency or by making a separate trade. I'm sure the Twins would have accepted a package of only prospects, but it would have had to have been a really good package (even overpaying), one that ultimately wasn't offered.
  5. It is possible to agree with Law and still not be critical of Terry Ryan. Though that might cause some serious disruptions to your worldview. The one argument I can hear is that they should have let Liriano make one more start instead of accepting that package. But if he goes 7 ip, 2 r, 8 ks, I really don't think it would have made a difference in his value. The downside was much greater (injury for one).
  6. Luckily you didn't mention one trade that Terry Ryan made. Even Bill Smith made some trades that worked out - Pavano, Rauch, Diamond to name three.
  7. This is the guy I would have considered trading the most. However, the Twins do have him for another year, no reason to give him away.

I think this is pretty much right. Morneau and Span are the two guys the Twins should have seriously considered trading and their value will be the same, or even more, in the offseason. It's no secret that the Twins want major league ready starting pitching back in any trade, which is nearly impossible to acquire at the deadline without giving up prospects. The offseason is when you can trade major league players for major league players. For the record, the one guy I would have seriously considered trading was Burton and would have listened hard on Perkins. Also would have traded Carroll, but its possible no offer was made and he can probably still be moved in August, along with Capps and Pavano and possibly even Morneau.
  9. I find it funny that questioning why someone can be negative in every single post can be equated with never being allowed to criticize the Twins for anything. I think the analogy with politics was spot on. Once you have an entrenched position or set of beliefs everything gets seen through that perspective and it is impossible to see anything positive or good that comes from the other side.
  10. No problem in the least if this was the best offer for Liriano. Twins didn't have a choice with Thome or Delmon, they were both claimed on waivers and it was either trade to those teams or keep them to the end of the season.
  11. I don't really rate defense and believe as a lay fan that I don't have the tools. I may take a cursory look at almost any set of numbers and try to understand them in context, but I would much rather read scouting reports.
  12. Twins are leading the AL in scoring in the month of July. That's positive.
  13. This type of thinking makes me laugh. What are you possibly basing this upon? Do you have any idea how the diagnosis went? Or conversations between medical personnel and Wimmers/his agent? It is probably just as likely, if not more so, that the medical people thought Tommy John was the likely outcome but decided, in conjunction with Wimmers and his agent, that it was worthwhile to pursue other options before getting cut open. I just don't see a problem with this.
  14. Anyone that takes analyzing defense seriously.
  15. I'm pretty sure no one takes errors/fielding percentage seriously. And who cares what an announcer says? Based on the interview that Ryan did with SABR a couple of weeks ago, I would guess they look at UZR and runs saved and all the other statistical measurements currently available, but don't value them nearly as high as scouting reports. And they shouldn't.
  16. I would be very hesitant to anoint Walker as a top prospect. As a college hitter he should be doing this in the Appy League. This has happened for several players before that were never heard from past Beloit.
  17. Maybe, but "partially torn UCL" can represent a continuum of injury. If it was torn through they would have already had surgery. Obviously it is only partially torn and determined that it is possible to still pitch with the situation. If it is possible to pitch that is preferable to having surgery. The likely result is that Wimmers will ultimately need surgery, but that still doesn't mean they should rush into surgery. I also don't accept that this is solely a Twins medical staff decision.
  18. From my perspective I hoped for more in return but I was fooling myself. Lots of complaining in this thread and others but I really want to know what people expected out of this. Look at the thread under "Liriano's Value" he nailed it there. A qualifying offer to receive a draft pick was not going to happen. No team would have given up their first round pick to sign him, so Liriano would have taken the $12.4 mil and the Twins would have been stuck with him. I long advocated trading him as quickly as possible for as much as they can get. They did it, I've moved on.
  19. That is a really good analysis, probably should have been required reading for anyone bitching and moaning about this trade. I still want to know what people expected.
  20. I consider that a net positive for the Twins organization. At best, UZR can provide some information about who was a good defender 2-3 years after it happened.
  21. Good post. In general I think there is an overvaluing of prospects across baseball. I understand teams don't want to get burned when they trade one away, but I am amazed at how hesitant teams are to trade them.
  22. You did just reference three of the best prospects of the past 20 years. That is a hard act to live up to. We'll see how long Rizzo and Middlebrooks keep it up.
  23. I agree with this. People are pretty casual in demanding surgery when it isn't them getting cut open. You are still talking about people and their lives and their potential livelihoods. Tommy John is a fairly successful surgery but its not perfect, it should always be a last resort. I imagine there is a combination of the Twins, Wimmers, Wimmer's agent getting together and making decisions. It is entirely possible Twins wanted surgery but Wimmers wanted rehab.
  24. Better the Twins got nothing? Or less?
  25. Reminds me of the Castillo trade. One thing about the comp pick is that a team would have to beat the 12.4 mil for 1 year and forfeit their own first round pick. I don't see a team dojng that. Twins would have been stuck with Liriano. If this was the best the Twins can do that says a lot about the market. I also found it interesting that Ryan traded him the day before his last scheduled start. He wanted no part of Liriano making another start and erasing all trade value.
