  1. No question it is a dream. Here is the only far-fetched scenario that allows a pitcher to fall to the Twins. Houston decides to take Moran. Extremely unlikely but I read a little smoke on this and it would be a possibility within their analytics, as well as to save the most cash for later picks. Cubs take Gray. Rockies take Bryant because they are high on him and don't want to deal with Boras. Twins take Appel.
  2. Even if I grant that all of this is true, why would we as a society allow heterosexual marriages, complete with all benefits mentioned throughout, when one (or both) of the individuals are sterile or otherwise unable to produce children? How would those marriages be any different than a homosexual marriage? I am quite sympathetic to many of the arguments you make here, particularly points 1-5. Luckily homosexual marriage does nothing to render these invalid. I am also quite sympathetic to the preference of a child being raised by a father and mother. Unfortunately the reality of our society today does not allow that to always be the case. This was true before homosexual marriage or adoption were allowed.
  3. I agree Gibson is probably better than most of the rotation but I'm not sure I agree the best thing for him right now is to start taking his lumps in the majors. I generally trust the Twins development as to when to call a guy up and I think that is especially true right now because there is no financial incentive to keep him down any longer if he was actually ready. Hernandez doesn't belong in a major league rotation.
  4. I can live with Stewart. Glad the consensus is starting to move that way. One takeaway from Law is how unsettled Houston currently is. It would be a dream scenario if they passed on the big three.
  5. I would reexamine your gut. There is no chance Plouffe goes anywhere near SS again. He probably ends up in LF soon.
  6. Killing it Chief.
  7. Reds and Giants always struck me as the logical Willingham destinations. They don't have great systems but do have some pitching.
  8. Oh I agree with this. I thought he had turned a corner. But alas.
  9. I should clarify. I'm not saying the Obama Administration has been good on this, just more restrained than I expected. It will likely get worse.
  10. The AP scandal is going to be interesting to see how it plays out. As far as I can tell what they did was perfectly legitimate and is covered by legislation that has passed since 9/11. The press has been way too deferential and congress hasn't been much more than a rubber stamp when it comes to expanding executive power. This is only the tip of the iceberg of what could happen down the line, all in the name of war and security. I generally see the Obama administration as restrained and noble on these issues relative to what an administration could be. I am quite concerned going forward.
  11. At the risk of continuing the thread, I just want to add that it would be nice if Gibson would step up and took hold of one the spots in the rotation. That would help.
  12. This is so bizarre to me. A car crash seems a bit extreme and doubtful that anyone would fault a GM for that. But if they pass on guys who have subsequently gotten injured or have not performed while actually pitching that seems relevant to me no matter what they did in the past. As was mentioned everyone has the same numbers. It is how you fuse them with scouting work to maximize results that matters the most. I was not especially impressed with what Ryan did for pitching and it is still way too early to suggest he did well, but I also fall in the category of those that think the market was very thin so the overall options were limited.
  13. That is of course the big question and we will probably not know for sure. If Willingham returns somewhat to the form of last season he and Perkins are probably the only two assets with decent value. Possibly Morneau.
  14. I like your points in this thread. Willingham wouldn't surprise me but a lot would depend on the return and whether Arcia proves that he can stay. If they can get a legit starting pitching prospect it would be hard for Ryan to say no. Carroll will be traded at some point, but it will mostly be just to dump salary (as was mentioned before). Doumit will not, mostly because he has value to the Twins, there wouldn't be any return for him, and there is no need to clear his salary or roster spot yet. More likely Morneau is extended than traded. Perkins is the interesting one. Doubtful he is moved but it is possible that a team blows Ryan away with legit starting pitching. That would be hard to refuse. Burton perhaps, but I just don't see another team giving much of anything for him. Same with the others that have been mentioned.
  15. Which of the three are you referring to? I assume the IRS scandal? Yeah, that is quite unfortunate. What is interesting is that the behavior of the groups was probably illegal, and at best was an attempt to muck up and skirt campaign finance laws. I don't think those groups were unique in that, just that they were specifically targeted for extra scrutiny. What is also interesting is that the IRS head at the time was a Bush appointee. My ultimate hope is that this will finally lead to some meaningful tax reform. I'm not holding my breath. As for the other two: The AP scandal strikes me as just another consequence of power that is ceded to the executive in times of war. Luckily this war will go on indefinitely. I think Benghazi is the most overrated scandal of my lifetime. It is ultimately going to be seen as a turf battle between the State Department and CIA, which each trying to blame the other for the initial security failure.
  16. Why fight it, just say you are a Republican. Anything of substance the movement brought to the table has been co-opted and corrupted by the party already.
  17. Is it hyberbole, twisting of my words to fit your simple narrative or willful ignorance of what I have been saying the whole time? I can't believe after this whole time this is how you would summarize my position but I do have better insight as to how so many of your debates ended so smoothly on BYTO.
  18. I know you and your list don't agree, but I still contend after the top 3, maybe 4, of this year's free agency crop that it is virtually a crapshoot among the remaining guys. I don't especially care to research the past 6 years of everyone on that list, but I wonder how Pelfrey and Correia compared to the rest in regards to walks allowed and GB rate. I also wonder if the Twins (GASP) scouts may have seen something in those two specifically to make them think they could improve in those two measures. I'm not sure the caliber of pitcher Revere would bring in but I imagine it was not much higher than Worley.
  19. I don't follow. The three starters acquired all were traditional startera before coming to Minnesota. The inefficiency is acquiring starters that are strong at preventing walks and inducing GBs relative to their overall price.
  20. I would argue that Bill Smith just happened to be GM when Target Field was approved/opened so he could reap the windfall of increased budgets in all areas of operations. It has stayed at appropriate levels under Ryan and appears it will again this year.
  21. I was thinking of this and glad the thread got started. It was mentioned a couple of times but I wonder if this is the Twins doing their own version of Moneyball taking advantage of the market inefficiencies of lesser value for everything but strikeouts. Ks are also preferred and the Twins have been more aggressive in acquiring pitchers that profile that way in the draft or through trades that acquire prospects. However high k guys are much more expensive to acquire via free agency and especially via trade. The solution of course would be to spend more for K guys but the options each offseason are severely limited. The alternative is to exploit the market inefficiency. When Ryan talked about Meyer he said that type of profile is extremely difficult to get once they pass A ball. Barring injury his prospect ranking will reflect that. High K starters so very rarely hit the market you need to do all you can to develop them yourself.
  22. Reusse has been talking about this the past week - the impact of three outcome hitters on the length of games. Not a positive trend but not sure there is any way to stop the evolution.
  23. No rush on anyone. Arcia is not good enough to get the Longoria treatment.
