I generally agree on 3/40 contracts. I think a fair argument can be made that until this past offseason the opportunity didn't really exist because of limited total payroll before Target Field and jigh layrolls since -the though Willingham is close to that number. I also am not sure who would have been worth that this offseason especially considering the state of the roster. Maybe Dempster but it would have taken much more.
Again you are correct that the next couple of years would be ok. But players are going to start entering arb and they may eant to acquire other players through trade or free agency. You can fit those two in but it should be evident that doing so will take away flexibility down the road. Ideally at the time when the Twins are ready to compete and may be in a position they want to extend a guy or sign a missing piece.
Plus you would lock up almost 50% of your payroll in two guys for the next 6 years. Sure you can fit it for a couple of years but the result is no flexibility going forward. And if Greinke falls off or gets hurt you are really screwed. That is a lot of risk for the Twins to take on.
2013 Baseball Payrolls, List - MLB - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy Advice Here is a quick link of payrolls. My mistake, Cle and KC are slightly higher. I imagine the Twins have more flexibility going forward.
Here are some things to consider for your next rant. Payroll did not start going down right after 2010. 2011 was about $10-15 mil higher and 2012 was about the same as 2010. Det and Chi do not spend more than twice as much in payroll as the Twins and KC and Cle are about the same -even slightly less. Lots of reasons have been given as to why payroll is where it's at right now. It wouldn't be very hard to find. The Twins won't be in the top of payrolls but should be middle of the pack. They can't cry poverty but they also won't have a TV deal that will come close to the big boys. Teams have down cycles from time to time when the farm system dries up. The future looks bright.
Gibson is about ready. He'll be the next starter called upon. Swarzak has been solid but he has had stretches before, no guarantee he keeps this up for five more months. He is also arb eligible after the season, long men don't often get paid especially with other candidates (Hendriks) that can take the slot.
I have assumed that Appel, Gray and Bryant would go 1-3 in some order. In that scenario I still figured that the Twins would go with Manea. However, with the current strong state of the system, a couple of quality arms (Gibson, Meyer) about ready to join the rotation and some decent pitching depth elsewhere maybe the Twins are poised to take on a little more risk for the higher upside of Stewart. I would be on board.
As a general rule I add one year and 10% to the accepted offer to give the Twins a chance. If you think a 5% difference would be enough and the Dodgers wouldn't match I want to know what you're smoking.
So I asked it in the other thread, but by what measure was he cooling off? The fact he is no longer hitting .450? He has reached base every game and had an OPS over 1.000 in the last 10.
The bigger situation is that most good players get locked up by their teams through their prime years which is what leaves free agency so barren. This trend will only get more pronounced as more and more national TV money (and to a lesser extent revenue sharing) comes pouring in.
This scenario also raises questions about what to do with Willingham. Barring injury there will be demand for him at the deadline. Do you keep him in the hope of competing in 2014 or do you flip him for young pitching, take a hit in 2014 (and hurt the outside chance that year) and have the value going forward?
Would you expect better from FSN? Contrary to this board most casual fans don't tune into a Twins game for negative coverage. If that is what they get they'll turn the station.
My takeaway is that no matter the facts of the situation the same group of people are going to criticize the front office. I'm consistently amazed that people live that miserable of an existence and bring it on a message board for the whole world to share in.
If by some miracle Appel falls to them in the draft that would help the cause. I always thought this year was to sort out what they have, next year they start to move (which js competing by your definition) and then start to really be a threat in 2015. I still think this is realistic.
Good for Collins. I don't agree with Broussard, but what he said should not be that controversial of a position for a Christian to take. Not culturally sensitive but not off his rocker. Here is the quote:
