  1. I agree with these statements except for the last sentence. It is difficult to execute a good free agent contract that was my point.
  2. I say we put Willingham at SS. Much easier to find a corner OF than a SS and he would have one of the highest OPS in the game for a SS.
  3. I still think it would take a big overpay and teams are probably too savvy to do that for a closer. But it only takes one and Perkins might be the best potentially available reliever.
  4. Despite what you just said I don't think there is a person on this board who dispute that statement. The questions are more about timing and risk and a sober analysis of who is actually available on the free agent market. I am completely on board with smart, low risk signings that lead to power hitters, top of the rotation starters, and good SSs. Those can be a little tricky to execute however.
  5. My main issue is he is pushing for smart, low risk signings but somehow thinks that will produce a power hitting 1b, a legit ss and a front of the rotation starter. Seems more fantasy than wise to me. Especially since last offseason had zero free agents that fit into the first two categories and two total that could be considered front line starters.
  6. Mike, your explanation puts you very much in the John Sickels camp best I can tell.
  7. I question how rigid it is. When things are working it can seem automatic (perhaps it should be) but if there is big struggles or it is a key game there is some adjustment. Chief speaks very wisely on this in my opinion. It is difficult to always have the best reliever warmed up for every situation and most baseball games are close. The best solution is to get more good relievers.
  8. I also think Slama had some bad luck. The times it would have been most obvious to call him up (ie last two seasons) he has either been struggling or injured. He is a classic can't scout the stat line guy. He didn't throw all that hard, struggled with control, didn't hold runners well. That said, and other Slama remarks aside, it would have been nice for him to get more of a reward for his contributions.
  9. I thought arby would have been about $2.5-3 mil and he signed with Boston for $1.25.
  10. Unsigned FAs still count against the pool if they exceed $100k.
  11. I'm starting to wonder if you understand that term.
  12. I agree, the Twins should have traded all prospects that failed. That was a poor job by Terry Ryan.
  13. Why do people have such an inflated view of Slama? I have nothing against the guy but this is ridiculous. He was never more than a C prospect with minimal value, maybe the kind of guy you can trade for a salary dump in August (such as when they traded Yohan Pino for Pavano). I'll repeat, teams could have had Slama any of the past three seasons for no cost other than a 40 man roster spot. They all passed.
  14. Building the organization? Slama?
  15. Let's do it. You never know what team might get desperate enough (cough, Giants, cough).
  16. I predict that barring injury the only two guys traded are Willingham and Carroll. Possibly Pelfrey if by some miracle he goes on a run before the deadline. Perkins is the best chip of people who could conceivably be traded, but they won't trade him unless they are blown away. I suspect they won't be. They won't get offered enough to make it worthwhile to move Morneau, Doumit and/or Burton (or any other reliever).
  17. I heard that want to get it down to Joe Mauer and a bunch of pre-arb guys as early as next season to really squeeze the profit out of Target Field. Why else would they have hired Terry Ryan back?
  18. Any team could have had Slama at the cost of a 40 man roster spot in any of the past 3 years and passed. That, more than a K/9 ratio in AAA, should tell us something.
  19. Is that the best way to think of prospects though? It would be silly to argue anyone other than Gibson is more likely to have a good MLB career, but that is also pretty much the ceiling of Gibson at this point. The ceiling of Meyer and Stewart are much higher. Meyer could be a legit #1 for several years and he is not that far away. This value counts for something. i still want to see another year from Berrios. I would rank the pitchers: Meyer Stewart Gibson Berrios
  20. The only player on that list that really bothers me is Hardy. I think the rest of the moves were either defensible or made sense at the time. The Ortiz move is the all time what if, but Boston signed him for about half of what the Twins would have owed him in arby. The Twins judged the market correctly, just didn't properly predict he would explode into a borderline HOFer. I'm not getting upset over letting Garrett Jones leave, but happy that he found some success. AJ and Gomez trades were fine.

I think "campaign reform" is kind of a fantasy. Money will get in one way or the other. The best move would be to scrap the income tax incentives that give companies and individuals incentives to donate such large amounts. I would be in favor of unlimited donations. I think under the current setup it is the only way a true third party candidate could get funded.
  23. I'm starting to think the JJ Hardy trade might have been a mistake.
