A good fastball and decent second pitch can suceed as a reliever. There are relievers other than Capps who have succeeded with fastball/change. Starters need three offerings or they struggle to turn an order three times.
I would think it works both ways. The sheer volume of balls in each defensive zone could result in worse defensive numbers. Someone keeps posting how the Twins are like 28 or 29the in defensive efficiency and have taken a big step back from last year. That doesn't jive well with the eye test.
I know his performance and I imagine other teams do as well. I just wonder what 6 weeks of that brings back. I don't think it is very much and I don't think Ryan is keen to just dump him for minimal return.
Perkins was never taken off the 40 man but he was ran out as a starter until he ran out of options. He very nearly didn't make the roster out of spring training when he was out of options. Then he would have been dfaed.
Yes! Someone finally explained and applied this correctly I am curious what the return for Morneau would be. I suspect it would be minimal and probably not ultimately worth it.
I would agree with this. I personally would give him another 4 months before moving to the pen. He does have the skillset to be a potential closer so there is something to fall back upon.
Challenges are a terrible idea. I would just use a buzz system. There are missed calls but it is much fewer than people think, maybe one a game average.
True. Then he could take the 1 or 2 year deal then. Boras is not going to jump at a below market offer early in the process, no competent agent would. The Twins might have gotten him at that contract just not early in the process.
We are all arguing out of ignorance here but I am quite skeptical Bourn lacked short term offers throughout the offseason. I suspect teams were hesitant to go 4 years on a guy with his skill set and Boras waited it out. So yes I stand by my sarcastic remark. Your plan is plenty swell but unrealistic as events ultimately proved.
Hypothetically, if the Twins picked up Morneau's contract in full do people actually think he would bring much of a return? I don't. And unless they are 100% committed to parting ways after the season they might as well hang on to him and determine if he is worth keeping arounf.
Not crazy. Mid season might be a little ambitious but 2014 is a real possibility. He should start in AA and if he starts out doing well it shouldn't take long.
So is your thing to enter a thread and ask questions that have been discussed for over 40 posts? I personally think the thread got derailed when the idea of it being cynical to expect no moves was expanded into everything else. But that's me.
If you consider Lincecum and Johnson as top of the rotation starters then we have significantly different definitions of what that means. You do realize this isn't 2011 anymore.
Mid-rotation sounds about right. We can only hope his flat stuff is the result of fatigue, but some of the scouting reports hinted at this the past year.
I would like to see a quote that implies that, even slightly. I'm cynical about several things, just not the Twins. My only point on this would be for people to own their cynicism and not be so sensitive/offended when they get called out on it.
