  1. There is generally a reason that pitchers reach free agency. It is not just money, it is the poor supply in free agency, and those available are generally pitchers with warts. Nolasco was pretty much a consensus top 5 free agent pitcher in the offseason. This is why building through free agency is so troublesome.
  2. Perhaps this is a good time to remember that the head trainer has since been fired. And perhaps it is luck, but pitching injuries seem to be down quite a bit this year for the Twins. Only Pelfrey right?
  3. I'll offer a dark horse addition this offseason - James Shields. Shields Hughes Nolasco Gibson Pelfrey/Meyer/May battle it out for the last spot.
  4. Melotakis was promoted too. Probably makes the bigs before Berrios.
  5. I found it interesting that they have concerns about downward plane. That is the primary concern of Law. AA will be a great test for this.
  6. I agree that this works for Stewart. I think the first full year for a high school draftee is about building innings and getting used to taking a turn every 5 days (instead of every week). There is a reason that Stewart is still high on the BA/BP lists even without the huge k/9 number. Next year will be the moving year for him. The interesting debate for me is to start him in the rotation in April and limit pitches per outing, or to hold him back in extended and start him if May/June and let him go full go. I think using the first approach for Stewart tells me he is on the fast track.
  7. Let's get real and at least add Baxendale and maybe Dinkelman.
  8. The other thing these all had in common is that they were August waiver trades. Not sure I would trade Morneau and certainly not Willingham for that quality.
  9. Yohan Pino for Pavano. Loek Van M for the lh reliever whose name I'm blanking on.
  10. Can we at least start complaining about free agent signings?
  11. Capps for Ramos is close right? Also traded spects for Rauch, Pavano and lh reliever from the Angels (and probably a few others).
  12. So you want to unload older players and respond by going $100 mil+ to lock up an OF in his decline years?
  13. When there is a young player ready to take the spot. Otherwise they play AAAA guys and lose even more games. I'm all for trading for value but no reason to just dump the guys.
  14. Parmelee has defensive skill?
  15. Morneau didn't have any value last year either, so there's that.
  16. The Twins just set a franchise record for most strikeouts in a season. And it's still August.
  17. This is a fair point but I would also argue it is part of a rebuilding process. Give a chance to guys on your roster and see if they can contribute. They probably assumed Parmelee wasn't going to be good enough but there was nothing lost giving him a couple hundred more at bats.
  18. I don't know if that is true. Veteran bats can have value in the last year of a deal. Less risk for the acquiring team.
  19. There is a lot of team control left for all three players. Could easily end up "meh" for both teams.
  20. I admire your devotion to Parmelee but he doesn't have the bat speed. Reps won't change that. The fairer comparison is Plouffe. He has the tools but can't put it together and they still run him out.
  21. My mistake I misunderstood what you meant by "turn over". I would call that "flip". Your criticism is valid but I think a little overstated. The current vets never really had the value some people think.
  22. I really disagree with these two points. No significant prospect is currently blocked. The Twins have not failed to turn over from veterans to prospects in a timely manner. Though you are correct the current veterans are pretty mediocre. The second point is much too early to determine. No free agent signed last offseason was going to expedite the process. Free agents the next two years are the ones that will supplement the core.
  23. I don't think anyone is being blocked but I agree the team should not have all three next year and would be surprised if they do. I would also be surprised if more than one finish 2014 on the roster. The wave is coming and they will be gone soon enough.
  24. There are players in the nfl other than qbs?
  25. This is a great point. And I don't think he needs additional praise because of this. He had a good reputation and respect across the game already, he gives plenty of praise to those under him. I would go so far as to suggest he probably doesn't care about this all that much while the major league team is in such a bad position.
