  1. I disagree, long term sustained success should be the primary motivating factor for decisions made by the Twins in the upcoming offseason. There is no indication that this is going to be a short window, and in that situation errors of commission are much more costly than errors of ommission. He is probably the *best* LF available, but that is a testament to the poor quality of the fas, not how good Cabrera is. Part of it is that I just don't trust Cabrera and don't think he is worth the contract he is going to get. He is injury prone, steroid tainted, has had two good seasons, one great season (steroid enhanced), doesn't hit for a lot of power, doesn't walk a bunch (though also doesn't k too much either). I don't buy that skillset is worthy to invest in long term.
  2. He wouldn't do that, union wouldn't like it, and Twins probably have no interest. Other than that it is probably a good option.
  3. The offer on the table was Hughes and Austin Jackson (and another guy who didn't make it). The Twins held out for the addition of another guy (who also didn't make it).
  4. No he shouldn't have. There is certainly a good argument that he should be in the rotation right now for the Twins, but if he is going to be a starter in the future he needs to work on turning lineups over, not coming in and winging it for a handful of batters. That said, Meyer should be up in September when he nears his innings cap to get his taste, but two extra weeks of bullpen wouldn't be as valuable as turning lineups over for a few more starts. Burton won't be back next season and if the Twins were contending this move would have happened, but the Twins certainly have the luxury of being patient.
  5. No, your proposed moves are exactly the type that will result in a few more wins next year at the expense of future sustained success. Rebuilding teams that lock up decline years will keep rebuilding. You sign players over 28 when you are in your window to compete. That is the tradeoff contending teams make, gain in the short term with cost on the backend. As I suggested, the Twins have the opposite calculus. I agree that Cabrera is probably the best player, but the Twins are much better served to sign a one or two year deal and maintain roster flexibility.
  6. I don't understand the desire for a team in the Twin's position to pay guys well into their decline years. This is the issue, not the actual money spent. As they decline they can't be moved and will take up a roster spot that should be filled by a better player, especially when you are talking about a corner player. This makes sense for a team that is contending, get the most value when the team is contending, fill a hole, and then figure out the decline phase later on. The Twins have the opposite calculus.
  7. For what it is worth, Reusse had a tweet that Gardy was as surprised by the report as anyone (after Ruesse talked to Gardy). I"m sure Ryan gave some GM speak that was noncommital either way and Sid ran with it. I still think Gardy is gone after the year and it is at least presented as a mutual thing. It's time.
  8. Here is Law in his chat today: I would be curious if they can figure out what the MOE is and what an acceptable MOE would be. If the best solution is to not take the exact number too seriously... Probably my bias coming through but I really think WAR is taking a beating this year.
  9. Are you a real person or a random Star Tribune comment section generator?
  10. My optimism comes more from this type of thinking that what else is being offered up in this thread. It seems the disaster spots have been (or soon will be ) filled with at least competency if not plus. I think there is clear room to add a corner bat and a starting pitcher but most of the improvement for the team will come from internal sources. There is always some improvement and some regression, but I think the current roster should result in a net improvement, combined with three actual legit stud prospects that should debut at some point, and hopefully a legit FA or two. The team is trending right if the results are not there. I'm not sure I would mistake that for good baseball.
  11. If by "shutting down" you mean drop to 50ish/50ish split I think that makes sense, perhaps 60/40 Pinto. But they can't start benching guys for a month.
  12. I don't know if this relates exactly to your study, but it seems that while elbow injuries are up that shoulder injuries are down. I don't think this is an accident. Training measures and usage patterns are moving in this way, as it is generally considered easier (though obviously not automatic) to recover from an elbow vs. a shoulder.
  13. I actually think Nolasco for a Dodgers OF is realistic. Works for both teams, would need to work out money and perhaps a second tier prospect that might need to be included.
  14. In more seriousness, Marte starts with Meyer or Berrios, includes Rosario and probably one other piece (Thorpe or Polanco?).
  15. I was nervous when the first trade didn't include him, but nailed it in the second offer. And Walker too And Trevor May is so good he can be traded to two teams. Who wouldn't jump at him after his performance so far.
  16. Barring injury.
  17. I think he has more hit tool than you are giving him credit for, and he did have a 70 arm...
  18. Fryer won't start a game once Pinto comes up in September. Not sure it will quite be 50-50 though.
  19. He was asking about Vargas.
  20. Not much. No d guys have limited value.
  21. I should watch more Dodgers games. That is also only "successful" bunt attempts, I suspect he had more PA when he tried at least one bunt.
  22. Still don't see why creating a hole going into next season is a good strategy. If the younger guys continue to develop and force themselves into the majors, Dozier's value won't change a whole lot.
  23. I think bunting for hit is harder/more rare because fielding is so much better now. Once someone was able to bunt several times it would be taken away from them. The occasional bunt for a hit that we see seems about optimal.
  24. I don't think they get much for him. Nothing bad with having depth going into next season, more value in that than what they could get in a trade in my opinion.
  25. At the risk of being wrong, I don't think the Twins will keep Pinto down past August 31. They will call up a third catcher (like every team does) and it makes sense to actually call up a guy who they want to see play. They will call up another arm and probably Hicks as well. The other depth guys - Colabello, Herrmann, another arm or two, will wait until after the season is over. I also think better than 50/50 that Meyer comes up to pitch in the pen.
