  1. So this raises the question of which mlb players do you think they could get for the guys on this list? I really think you overvalue the return prospects can bring back.
  2. On the plus side, May and Polanco will be outside the top 6, so you can be excited about the same guys. The difference this year is that the elite guys should finally graduate with 4 of the top 5 guys possibly making mlb contributions this year (assuming health for Berrios). The 11-20 guys are primarily those that will move into the top 10 this year as jokin pointed out. They are still a year away and probably about half of these guys will be looking really good next year, we just aren't sure which ones yet.
  3. I would read it as don't expect a huge signing, not that they won't sign anyone. After initial hope for a run at Shields, I was resigned to this myself. If they signed a Hughes level starter and a stopgap LF/CF and take a few flyers on relievers, which would be a defensible offseason, payroll would go down.
  4. Assuming he is healthy there is little reason not to start Minier at Cedar Rapids. It seems the best young guys, especially hitters, can skip the Appy league.
  5. Hopefully we have another 40 or so close to that.
  6. The difference is that Shields would actually have legitimate value at the deadline, not imagined value used to further criticize the front office.
  7. Kemp might have been available in July but I highly doubt the Dodgers would be interested in moving him in a straight salary dump at this point. Not especially interested in Ethier or Crawford, though moving Nolasco might make it worth it.
  8. I would disagree. Twitter is probably the greatest social media invention to date and the best overall information invention since the internet. It's all in how you use it.
  9. Yes. Added value to the trade. And if the Royals collapsed this year they also could have traded him at the deadline and recouped some of the value they gave up initially. This isn't mentioned nearly enough in my opinion.
  10. I think you mean it is an explanation, not a solution, because networks aren't shelling out these huge contracts to see their advertising opportunities cut. But yes, I actually think a large part of the increase in game times can be explained by increased time between innings for ads. And I don't see that changing.
  11. Why not oust him? A reasonable argument can be made that changing managers could make a significant difference in the team's performance. Deal with a bad season after the fact, but do the best you can for the upcoming season.
  12. But the fewest total home runs since 1995 were hit this year.
  13. Without looking at all the stats I would caution that this critique is more anecdotal than reality. Twins were 4th best team at taking the extra base and 2nd at percent time taking the extra base. This was balanced by being 12th in most outs on the bases. It seems with raw numbers they are more aggressive while also being successful more often than failures. I take this as a success not a failure. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2014-baserunning-batting.shtml
  14. I would say with high confidence he has one more year. If they improve he'll stay, if they flirt with 90 losses again he'll resign. And I would say 4 years to clean up the mess following 2011 is appropriate, especially since this year showed some semblance of improvement.
  15. Also interesting that Hicks has an almost .060 advantage in OBP over Rasmus, so not clear Rasmus has significant advantage in offensive value. Pretty much the only advantage of Rasmus is a significantly higher ISO, but Hicks seemed to have an ISO much below what would be expected. I would take Rasmus on a one year deal but nothing more than that.
  16. I certainly agree with 1 and 2. 3 is kind of confusing to me. I'm not sure acquiring veteran stopgaps that are better than the players you list is as simple as you make it seem to be. Veteran stopgaps that will be clear improvements but will only sign for a year or two really don't exist in the free agent market, and trading prospects to acquire them probably doesn't make much sense for a rebuilding team. They could play kids, but in a very real sense they already are. 4 is fine but probably a difficult thing to execute. Can't exactly copy another team, need to best utilize resources within the organization. I would be curious to see that expanded into what it might look like to copy those franchises. To merely pick the teams that are currently successful and say "be like them" doesn't mean a whole lot.
  17. Is it true that it's not typical? It seems that a surefire 1-1 and set top of the draft has been the rarer occurrence the last several drafts. 2011 seems to be the exception not the rule.
  18. I think with a few umpire exceptions this is overblown. The problem with a standard like this is where do you draw the line? Pitchers will keep pushing the edges of the zone until they no longer get the calls. And strikeouts are at record highs, I don't think the failure to call more strikes is the problem.
  19. I'm not sure Moore was vilified everywhere, it was actually pretty split if I remember correctly, on this board as much as everywhere. I liked the trade for the Royals at the time and still do. Unless they turn into perennial all stars, giving up players on the corners just won't burn a franchise that badly, and they knew Myers as well as anyone. I did think the secondary parts of the trade favored the Rays, but the emergence of Davis as such a bullpen weapon certainly changed that equation.
  20. You meant Rios, not Eaton right? They traded an actual starting pitcher for Eaton.
  21. People assume Dave Martinez speaks Spanish fluently and that he will automatically relate better to Latin American players but do we know for sure this is true? He was born in New York, played high school baseball in Florida and was drafted like any other American-born player. This isn't to knock him, strikes me as a very strong candidate, perhaps my personal favorite from outside the organization.
  22. The Diamondbacks job was just mentioned on mlbtr. I hadn't really thought of that, but makes sense if Tony La Russa wants experience in his candidate. I think it makes sense for Gardy to take a year off, but the risk is that if he waits a year and passes on jobs, the industry might move on from him heading into 2016.
  23. Part of the issue is that there have only been two managers and two GMs in that time. Not a huge sample size. I stand by Molitor or outside the organization. And even if it is Molitor, I suspect a significant amount of coaches would be from outside the org.
  24. I want to push back on #1 a little. Speaking Spanish is not all that significant, all the Latin American players in the majors can speak enough English. The bigger need is someone who grew up in the DR or Venezuela or another Latin American country. It is a cultural issue, not a language issue. Not sure if saying speaking Spanish was shorthand for that, but to me it is a significant distinction.
  25. I don't know if this is related. At all. Watching the press conference he basically said that he was firing his brother. Hard to imagine that is the type of decision anyone can make on their own. That, among other reasons, is why you have multiple people responsible for making big decisions like this.
