  1. Don't want to speak for everyone, but if keeping Sano in LF leads to him hitting like Babe Ruth I'd be OK with it.
  2. I'll go a step further and say they do it in dramatic fashion. Maybe even a walkoff bomb.
  3. Kiley is a man, used to work in a front office, does a podcast called Marginal Prospects. He watches top prospects a handful of times, though he focuses more on amateur players and the draft. Like most prospect writers he is probably more an aggregator of multiple scouting sources for his final writings. What he wrote on Meyer is probably the scouting consensus at the moment.
  4. I've thought about this too. I wonder if Ryan believes this or he doesn't publicly want to criticize Gardy. A fine line between disturbing and admirably. The hire should speak to this. On another note, Gardy made a postseason run as deep as Cleveland or Kansas City (so far). So it would be correct to say during his tenure all AL Central teams made a deep run. Or you could say since Gardy Meade his deep run all other Central teams made a deep run. Or since his last playoff win all other Central teams have a playoff win.
  5. Nice. I look forward to checking in when the playoffs start.
  6. I don't think Alomar was a token interview but he is the only candidate as of now right? Odds are it won't be a Hispanic manager.
  7. They certainly aren't looking good on this Twins Way stuff as Thrylos pointed out as well. It does seem Ryan is somewhat taking a bigger picture view and looking for overall improvement in basic things and not worrying about labels, or at least that's how I read it. I just reread it and I'm more "meh" than anything. Probably shouldn't have high expectations, but there really is very little inspiration in this conversation. Maybe I'm just bored with words and spin and await some actual moves and improvement. I get the sense that this is the last chance. If there is no improvement I sense they blow the whole thing out. I'm ok with one more season.
  8. Not a huge difference but he was in Hi A, one full year in the minors when he was acquired. He's not a reliever yet. And tall pitchers generally take longer and are higher risk. I don't think anyone guaranteed he would be a #2 when acquired, just that he had a legit shot at it and that pitchers with that upside are tough to acquire. If he was a surefire no doubt #2 the Nat's wouldn't have traded him for only Span.
  9. Wouldn't exactly inspire me to renew my tickets. But there are limited ways to spin a train wreck and excessive emphasis on young players is a bad idea.
  10. I don't think it really works like this in reality. Teams communicate all the time about needs and who might be available. Surely everyone is "available" in the sense that if you make an insane offer they'll do it. I don't think the Twins can make an offer insane enough to get Stanton if the Marlins don't want to trade him, and I wouldn't want to do so with Gonzalez, he's not so good that it is worthwhile to vastly overpay. And the Nationals aren't interested in trading him unless they have a clear option to replace him. I don't see how the Marlins would trade Stanton unless they aren't close on an extension (as in, Stanton won't want to sign there or wants obscene money - 10+ years). In that scenario why would he want to sign with the Twins instead, a team coming off 4 90 loss seasons and who just gutted their roster/farm system to acquire him? And I'm not gutting the roster to acquire a guy who will walk in 2 years.
  11. Absolutely he is well regarded for handling bullpens, probably top 5 in the game. I invite you to read other blogs and beat writers for some perspective. Every fanbase hates how their manager handles the bullpen. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/08/mlb-managers-bullpen-management-fans-complaints
  12. Now THAT, unequivocally, was absurd. But yes, probably making assumptions on points that weren't being made which lead to an ill-advise comparison of the handling of Harper to the (potential) handling of Sano - comparing the best pure hitting prospect in a generation to a very good prospect who just missed a full year due to injury.
  13. And equally absurd.
  14. I agree with this. I think once Sano is moved from 3B to the OF he isn't going back (though will probably eventually end up at 1B). Chances are he doesn't stick at 3B either way, but is it worth it to have his bat in the lineup for a couple extra months next season to prevent the team from finding out? I would start the season with Sano at 3B in AA Then you can see if his bat forces the issue before his glove is ready, then you decide. I don't think we should automatically assume, despite articles posted on this site, ill advised comparisons to Bryce Harper or transitive arguments referencing Vargas, that after missing a a full year of development he can jump right into the bigs with his bat
  15. I would even throw in May and possibly Adam Brett Walker if that's what it took.
  16. I much prefer they keep what they are doing secret. If for no other reason than the comedy of reading people on boards like this (and even national writers) continue to slam the Twins over something they really have no reference for. That, and keeping it secret is what the Cardinals would do.
  17. Indeed he is. Was dinged up a little but no reason he won't be a beast going forward.
  18. Probably a good idea. Comparing Sano, even though he is a very good prospect, to the best pure hitting prospect in a generation probably doesn't lead to much fruit.
  19. Or Danny Santana
  20. This made me chuckle. I think the "do this to be more like St. Louis" will be the justification for everything we want done. I'll go out on a limb and suggest St. Louis hasn't traded an above average everyday player unless they have a clear replacement ready to go
  21. This strikes me as the likely scenario. Starts out in LF, moves to 1B when Mauer moves on. Nothing wrong with starting him this spring at 3B to see if he can make it work but once he moves to LF he won't return to 3B.
  22. Why should that stop people from criticizing Ryan for not trading for them? I find it very unlikely the Nats trade Gio and close to unlikely that the Marlins trade Stanton.
  23. Nolasco certainly was an overpay. As was Jimenez and probably Garza too. Hard to sign any free agent pitcher to a good contract. And he certainly was out of desperation - the overall crappiness of Twins pitching over the past several years has been well documented. If the Twins weren't desperate no chance they sign a mid-rotation guy (if you are generous) to a 4 year deal.
  24. I tried to find total spending for all teams each of the past three years but could only find last year. Twins were number 6 overall (not counting Morales). This can be spun in all sorts of ways, but that seems acceptable to me. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/2013-14-free-agent-spending-by-team-to-date.html I imagine the previous two years were more in the 17-25 range, but payroll going into the 2012 season was around $100 mil, so that strikes me as acceptable as well. The main outlier since Ryan took over was 2012-2013 offseason, and while that has been debated to death on this board, it was a terrible market for starters which probably prevented spending that offseason as much as any specific decision made from ownership or Ryan.
  25. I would add Escobar, and the draft pick for Cuddyer leaving ended up being Berrios. I was only referencing the players you mentioned that left. These players either left before Ryan took over, retired, were spun for legitimate assets, or were well into their decline phase of their career (Coors field inspired batting titles not withstanding). I would argue that rebuilding teams should not lament losing any of these assets.
