  1. If May is a 2 or 3 as a starter, there is no debate. If he struggles to turn over a lineup a third time, there is a debate, especially if May becomes a dominant reliever. I generally take the position you keep a guy at the tougher job until you have to move him, so I certainly expect May to be back in the rotation by no later than the offseason, maybe earlier if the Twins really collapse down the stretch. Either way, it's also a better debate with accurate numbers. Are you assuming he misses 40% of the year as a reliever but is fully healthy as a starter?
  2. While fair, that was 8 years ago under a very different financial reality. Twins have handed out over $200mil in contracts and extensions over the past two years. Ryan doesn't appear to be hiding behind the hay wagon. Now if over the next 3-4 years he is afraid to lock up this young core emerging, that is a problem.
  3. While all this is true, I do chuckle a little that it was posted the day after Pelfrey went 8 scoreless.
  4. Or you hire and empower subordinates to that job. Can go multiple ways. And however it gets done, it's hard to make the argument that contracts have really been a problem the last couple of years, except maybe being too quick to give extensions and giving out too much money to less than elite players. They certainly haven't been aggressive or creative with their trades though.
  5. Things starting to look up in your world I see.
  6. On the bigger trade point - I think Ryan doesn't make a lot of trades and is hesitant to do the small incremental trades or engage in much arbitrage, but his total volume of trades is probably representative of many GMs, especially GMs of teams that have been in place for a while. I think a lot of teams are way conservative when it comes to trades, so the few that are active stand out more.
  7. On the Mauer point, I think the Twins would move him out of the #3 hole if they had a reasonable replacement.
  8. I'm pretty sure GMs don't really negotiate contracts. And I'm skeptical of how much of the nitty gritty trade talks they do either. Seems like negotiations generally get close to decided by assistants and the GM makes the final push/decision.
  9. I actually disagree, the FO should be making the decisions on which pitchers are starters and which are relievers. They shouldn't necessarily micro manage day to day and game by game decisions, but that is big picture enough that the FO should make the final decision.
  10. In Bollingers's defense his job is basically pr for the team.
  11. I think May was considered but: For a quick turnaround I can accept that, but if it goes past two games it is really bad roster management.
  12. I don't buy Baltimore over the Twins but the rest of the odds look about right. Twins strike me as the clear 6th.
  13. And considering a total of 2 SS (traded for each other) and 0 Cs were moved at the deadline, there wasn't exactly a huge number of those pieces floating out there.
  14. Let's see if The Who can help. Nope, no help.
  15. Since I linked an ESPN article it was probably at best mixed response.
  16. Probably seems like a big qualifier, and is different than absolutely, which probably explains some of the extra value. I don't disagree with the first part, hopefully he makes a similar signing this offseason to pair with the acquired Jepsen.
  17. Here's a national guy agreeing with the Twins deadline approach. I would have added a minimum of one more reliever but I don't exactly disagree. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2015-mlb-trade-deadline-winners-losers-blue-jays-royals-dodgers-mets-padres-yankees/?ex_cid=story-twitter
  18. I assume those two things have blended together.
  19. It was pretty much an embarrassing effort for 2015. Ryan absolutely should have snatched up one of the rentals. 2 relievers should have been the minimum. He might think he can wait until August but it could easily be too late. All that said, I would still say (and think basically everyone agrees) that giving up a legit prospect or prospects for a rental would have been mistake. Good for Toronto for going for it but they have a significantly different calculus including a GM that might be fired. Nothing to lose by pushing all in, let the next guy clean up the mess if it fails. If it succeeds he gets an extension.
  20. Looking at it closer I think next year had much to do with that decision.
  21. Your first thought is not accurate. Those guys are more 2/12, 2/15 or even 3 years. Of course you can get equal production if you sign the right minor league guys, but that is far from a sure thing. People are saying having Jepsen next year for $5mil is some burden. It's a fair price and probably explains why the value seems a little higher relative to the rentals.
  22. Burton and Fien then had significantly less value than Jepsen did today. This talk of sell high on those guys is nonsense. Whether they should have traded Perkins is certainly a valid question.
  23. I think Phillips was in the mid 20s, so no top 20 guys. It just takes such a unique situation for top 20 guys to move.
  24. Like if Hu was better?
