  1. Look don't make this about everyone else, most of the issues stem from your, to use your term, banal language. It opens the door for misinterpretation because there is no clear thesis here. You claim your point was about Hicks' approach and the article had precious little to say about that. Then you got huffy with me for using a synonymous term. "Starting to find one's way" = "turn the corner"! I didn't walk in looking to misinterpret your point - banality and a lack of clarity on your part caused that. And a half dozen or so independent posters share that problem. i've written a crap-ton of unclear things in my day, I don't agree that you are intentionally grinding an axe. I just don't think this article communicated well what you have stated was your point. Nothing more.
  2. Nick - multiple people are reading the same thing out of your post. You can keep shouting about how clear you think you were, but I'm suggesting your point was nowhere near as clear as you think it was. From the article title and on - it just wasn't. That isn't misrepresenting you. You use Dickbert lingo like "slump busting single" - except all three of his hits this season have been that and it hasn't busted him out of anything. In this thread you talk about the "last week" of games - which is a grand total of 13 at-bats. You have talked about a "dramatic" improvement in his approach in that meager of a sample size. You claim he's walking into the box with "more confidence" - something you can't possibly know unless you've talked to him. I fail to see how there is such a dramatic difference between "turn the corner" and "starting to find his way" that you react this strongly. If there is a problem here, it's with clarity in your post. If you wanted to show how there has been a change in his approach, if that is truly the heart of your post, why do you invest all of one paragraph to it and little, if any, analysis? Most of it is about Bruno as if it is a pre-emptive back-patting for the success you see Hicks continuing to have. (As in....turning the corner!) Hell, this reply of yours has more analysis of what you're now saying was your point. As I mentioned, I think a blog about these last 13 at-bats would be really interesting. This was just confusing, especially with how defensive you've been about very understandably unsure comments in response.
  3. Couldn't agree more - every day like today is worth it for those summer games in a true baseball park. Miller just doesn't feel the same. Nice park, but I love an actual baseball stadium. Plus - what's so bad about double headers? Those are awesome!
  4. I don't think Nick is grinding an axe - I just think there were two excellent points to make (Bruno's career comp to Hicks and a breakdown of his last 10 ABs) and this article unfortunately doesn't do a good job of either. It comes off exactly how others like kab have interpreted it. My impression before I hit the comments was that this was far too soon declaring "corner turned!"
  5. Um..."the last week" has been all of three games for the kid. I'm a bit disturbed that people are ignoring sample size. It was right to cite sample size when he was struggling but to ignore it after a few games of a better approach is a tad silly. Look, I'm optimistic on Hicks but there is a lot of talk in this thread that seems inconsistent in perspective.
  6. I will let Dave chew on that but if true - too rich for my blood.
  7. in the case of terrorism or other mass murders I don't believe in waiting for a trial if there are further lives in risk. Now that presumes having significant evidence of ties to more attacks and reason to believe there is time sensitive risk. Of course this is vague, it's hard to presume the depths to which a terrorist may go but I won't preclude the use of extreme measures. The lives of innocents matter much more than someone who has already checked out of our social contract. I'm not sacrificing the liberties of anyone innocent for security, I'm just not waiting for a token trial while people die if we have strong reason to believe they might. You want to run some one hour farce trial to ease your conscience - be my guest, but I don't see the point. We already grant such exceptions in war so lets get off that idea from the start.
  8. I think that's a bit of an assumption. Given that we know next to nothing about what law enforcement knows about these two we are only talking hypotheticals. Quite frankly I don't feel as though we need to wait for a trial to start extracting information. At the end of the day if we know they did it and if we believe there is time sensitivity - I'm ok with interrogation including torture if necessary. But only under those conditions. (Known guilt and potential to know time sensitive information that could save lives). I think too often the parameters are stretched too wide but I have never understood the "protect the murders rights!" arguments unless you also feel imprisonment is wrong.
  9. I've never quite understood this argument. We force criminals to give up rights all the time, so a generic argument like that one just rings hollow to me. It's only value is to (falsely) claim moral superiority.
  10. I think it's safe to say Escobar is so far thriving in this role. Given that Florimon continues to make routine errors at his position, I don't think we'll have to worry about seeing Escobar become the every-day shortstop for this team at some point. But it's a good point that Florimon's value is dramatically decreased as a bench player because of a lack of versatility.
  11. It's hard for me to predict win totals when our most important position is such a wild-card. I'm still very down on Ponder, but he certainly showed some positives from time to time last year. If he's the "I can't throw for 100 yards" guy we saw for a few stretches last year, it won't matter what the schedule is.
  12. Feels a bit like leading a Wisconsin Beauty Pageant. But it could be worse!
  13. I'm sorry, what's your point? Yes, they overpaid Correia (and, amusingly, cited "innings" as their motivation) but doesn't that prove the point? When the Twins do choose to overpay, they generally get what they want. They just rarely choose to do so. Or choose to only overpay in increments of three or less years.
  14. Good interview. From what Antony said it sounds like most of their conversations were preliminary at best and never got to the point of actual contract offers. So this doesn't discredit or change any opinions. Money still matters, but of course there are other factors that go into a decision. I think anyone latching on to the idea that this somehow proves that non-money factors are why FAs avoid us is reading into this WAY too much. As Antony said, most of their signings seemed to be the aggressor in getting it done. The Twins have a standing reputation that they aren't going to overspend. That kind of aggressive tact with FA dollars can quickly make a negotiation happen. It shouldn't surprise us it doesn't happen with the Twins and guys part ways only with cordial conversations if the team isn't being aggressive with their resources. That's not to slight the Twins, just a statement of their approach.
  15. Even though the Dark Knight crack did this effectively, I might have a bridge to offer here: I think the Twins do prize innings most of all from starters. You hear it in the FO and managerial rhetoric all the time. So what if the problem is precisely what cmat has been demonstrating: the errant belief that less Ks = more innings. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Twins were factually ignorant about this and truly believed that their pitch to contact philosophy is more effective for starters "lasting deeper into games". This entire discussion may be more representative of the problem than we probably like to think.
  16. We sure eem struck by these lingering injuries a lot. For those still defending the Twins handling.....why no response to this well stated argument? (Far too much about breaks for Hicks - lets focus in on just having a bench that exists much less how usable it is) Even if this time there was no major harm done the larger point is that this team has been hamstringing themselves with "lingering injury" players for three years now on a regular basis. At what point does this obviously stupid routine not become apparent to them?
  17. I'd settle for a 3 man bench at this point. Why in god's name is Mastro not on the DL if the two things he can capably provide (defense and SPEED!) are out the window? Have we STILL not learned to just DL guys and stop hurting the club by bleeding out injuries for weeks on end?
  18. So, going to be one of those awesome 5 hour games tonight eh?
  19. All of that is very fair. I think it's possible to say the Twins handled this poorly without putting it on an undue pedestal. Yes, lots of teams err in this way but that doesn't change that it was an error. Part of why these conversations spin out is because on group steadfastly denies anything was done wrong while the other makes it out to be a crime of the century. Im just rooting for the guy to spite this team's petty, pathetic public campaign to pin the demise of our team on him. If anything I want them to learn not to go so nuclear in public. As others have said, we are lucky that same nonsense didn't cost us Perkins too. Just be professional about handling these things if they are so commonplace.
  20. How many more times do we have to hear about Torii's leadership? How much "leadership" does it take to punch Nick Punto? That's straight from the Gardy playbook.
  21. Good for you rook - nice first AB right there. Also, when is the last time Mauer turned on a ball like that to right center? That's a homerun 99% of the time, was almost surprised seeing it.
  22. I'm sorry, could you back this up? I never remember hearing public defiant comments. I heard a lot of Twins talking heads go public ABOUT Slowey, but never him directly. So maybe I missed something but let's see what you are basing this off of. I admit his injury could have been indirectly attributed to the switch in usage, with his past injuries that is definitely possible. But I know this - I wouldn't feel comfortable switching a guy into a Perkins/Burton type only a week after we decided he wasn't a starter. Just because you can pitch 7 innings in one game doesn't mean you can pitch 1-2 innings once a day for three out of four days. In fact, I'd have to imagine that is a very different kind of arm usage.
  23. Are you intentionally missing the point? Look, baseball is what it is. We can all long for the tough guy days but starters aren't built or conditioned for that anymore. And a fragile guy like Slowey whose big league career was hanging in the balance had a right to be perturbed about his usage. It's not a difficult point. I doubt his current performance will continue, but I said at the time and I repeat now that the Twins were far more in the wrong in this situation than Slowey. And his subsequent injury (a fact - it happened) verifies his concerns.
  24. So we have ourselves a challenge tonight - can the Twins "big" FA pickup muster enough to make Brendan Harris sit down looking? Forget hypotheticals with Hicks, we've got a real life showdown of ineptitude to witness tonight!
  25. I'm not making an "excuse" - I'm stating a fact of mismanagement of his preparation. But let's look at your examples: Liriano was given a week off from starting before he relieved - Slowey was converted to the bullpen at the end of ST and immediately moved to the role culminating in three appearances in four games at the start of the season. Liriano waited three days for his second bullpen appearance and pitched back to back before getting another 5 days before his next appearance. Apples and oranges. Chapman has BEEN A CLOSER FOR THREE YEARS. Again, find me a career starter that was asked, a week before the season, to switch to being a reliever and then immediately put in a back-of-the-bullpen stopper/workhorse. Not to mention this was a guy with injury problems already. (That's on him too, but it's still a factor the Twins should've considered)
