  1. Sorry but this is the standard response and it is nonsense. The truth is Slowey didn't earn a spot and that's on him. What is not on him is having days to switch from a once every five days starter (for several years) to a late inning reliever who pitches 1-2 innings three out of four days. In this day and age that is a radical adjustment that most players would struggle with much less an injury prone guy with less than a week to prepare. If they had used him in a Swarzak like role - I could understand. I literally cannot remember a team doing a conversion like that with a week before the season and then act on it so fast. It was stupid and selfish by the Twins, Slowey was simply upset about an idiotic handling of his situation.
  2. I love how people's reaction to these sorts of things is about making too much of something. This is a conversation about a sport - ANYTHING you become passionate about with a sport is taking something that is largely trivial, meaningless, and far from earth shattering and making it that way out of nothing more than your love for it. Whether that is positive elation about something, negativity about something, or just grumbling about something you don't like - it's all mountains out of mole hills. A board like this exists because we've all basically agreed that spending our time chatting about this is more relevant to us than volunteering at a soup kitchen. So please, cut the lectures about perspective. All sports conversations have already dropped that pretense the moment you started one. Now back to Gardy's inept leadership strategies. It's been long overdue that he got thoroughly roasted for them.
  3. If he puts on a uniform and is less than 25 years old - you can bet your ass Gardy will rag him publicly before he sits the kid down. Gotta break em in early to poor leadership strategies or they don't become docile enough to being jerked around.
  4. Just to be clear I think the conversation has spun a couple different ways. I don't begrudge the Twins for moving him - I thought it was a stupid move at the time (another sell-low move I railed against heavily) when the team had plenty of available pitching spots that they could've given to him to rebuild value. He may well have never rebuilt any value, but as we saw last year - it would've been hard for him to be any worse than what we had. All that said, the whole "do what the team wants" should at least include the team not intentionally tossing around your career like it's worthless. Slowey has a right to not like the idea of being converted to a reliever in the manner they did it. They stretched him out all spring, never letting him believe his role would be anything but a starter. And then within a week of opening day they told him he'd be a reliever. And then, most baffling of all, in 3 OF THE FIRST 4 GAMES!!!, they used him as a one inning reliever. Blackburn can lunchpail his sorry talent to the mound all he wants, I can't remember a team doing what the Twins did to Slowey before. It wasn't a shock he got hurt as a result of that usage and he had a right to be pissed. That's his career and his family's livelihood. He basically became the pariah for the awful 2011 season. It was incredibly unfair. So I'm merely rooting for the guy to succeed in spite of the Twins best efforts to mangle his career.
  5. I'm rooting for him too. The Twins talking heads treatment of him has always baffled me. What professional whose career is on the line likes having his usage toyed with? Turns out he was right too that stretching him to start all spring and then days later turning him into a back to back one inning reliever was trouble for his arm. God forbid he look out for his own livelihood.
  6. Ah Hendricks. When you say "One of the ten worst starters in baseball" in regards to the Twins you have to be FAR more specific. That could be, like, 6 or 7 guys.
  7. Liriano's back?
  8. Yeah, is Mastro another one of these 'he's hurt but we're not going to put him on the DL for 3 weeks, shorten our bench, and then finally put him on the DL right before he's healthy enough to come back" routines that seems to be common for the Twins lately? I was really hoping we wouldn't have that again this year.
  9. No one is saying he can't make a critical comment in public. Just do it after you've had the common decency to share your thoughts in private too. Otherwise, at the very least, you risk sending mixed signals to a young player who has more than enough issues without his manager piling on.
  10. Agreed, I'm well aware of what an irrational pipe-dream it is. But I wish nonetheless!
  11. Blind love for Bourjos' game defensively. Nothing more. It wouldn't be a great move, but I'd love it as a buy-low. Let him re-coop some value by playing every day and flashing that range with our statue in LF and a spacious CF. It'll probably cost a bullpen piece at most, so maybe we can turn that into a buy-low, sell-high situation.
  12. Even so, there may be other aspects of his game that some refining could help with. At this point, why have him up unless he is ready. I have a problem with bringing up an elite prospect this early to a bad team unless he's basically demanding to be called up. I don't think we're quite there with him yet personally. His time is coming and I'm excited, but I hope this is just a brief taste. Let's go snag Bourjos for Slama (Duensing? Not to mock the rule) or something and reboot this thing in the outfield. Hicks and Arcia should get nice and comfy playing with each other in AAA and be ready for later in the season.
  13. One would like to think the performance of Hicks so far would make the Twins cautious to give Arcia anything more than a taste. This is a bad baseball team again, at this point I don't see why we throw another piece of the future at this mess.
  14. Seeing this bumped only reminds me how much I dislike Quentin. I hope all baseball pitchers, for the week he comes back, throw at his earhole until he gets the point. Back off the plate - or at least don't cry about it when you spin into inside pitches all the time.
  15. I'd like to see some consistency in opportunity for Hendricks. Even if he's terrible for the next however many months...who cares? Hendricks has nothing more to prove in AAA.
  16. In the spirit of this thread: Potatoes > Argyle Socks Discuss.
  17. I assumed the free space would be something like: "Twins starter fails to strike someone out"
  18. I'm sure this is towards the bottom, but how is it relative to other teams? Baseball has been trying for years to get more black kids into baseball, but it's just got so many inherent disadvantages to other sports for those kids that I'm not surprised that pursuit has been a struggle.
  19. Quite frankly, that pitch was avoidable by Quentin. It wasn't SO far inside he couldn't have spun away. That roided-up asshat has been sitting on homeplate for years and bitching about getting hit. Grienke probably tried to get too macho once he saw Quentin crying about it at first but that was about as clear a situation as possible that he wasn't trying to hit him. That pitch, to 99% of the hitters in the league is a brush back, ball four, with the guy going "whoa" that it was rising. Only Quentin's pansy-ass would get hit there because that's his game. Sorry, but in baseball Quentin is easily in my bottom five of players I can't stand.
  20. You went with Hicks, as appealing as Borbon is - I think you have to pass. Too soon and a bad message if you do.
  21. Sad to hear so much negativity - Kauffman is my favorite non-Twins ballpark. I had nothing but positive experiences at the game. (The city sucks, but that's not what I went for) One stadium that doesn't put up with nonsense is Milwaukee. Couple kids snuck down and started some really offensive language in a family section. I gave them an earful while someone else went for an usher. They came back with 6 cops for two guys. That was not a friendly way to be removed, but well deserved.
  22. I can't wait to see if Gardy's logic about Correia being left in there to get a strikeout applies when we, say, need a homerun from Joe Mauer.
  23. This has been the Gardy method for a long time. Sad to see it this soon with Hicks though. The kid gets a kick in the pants enough seeing his batting average every AB much less hearing his manager rip him in public.
  24. Man this negativity around here is just non-stop! I wish someone would advocate for more positivity. Where, oh where, could such a hero be?
  25. I guess I must have imagined that "Hey, we're in first place!" thread that was all positivity. Some people are just never satisfied until they can label everyone else negative to make themselves feel like a real fan.
