  1. I get the Boston talk, but I wouldn't deal for Beantown specs. It may be an unfair bias, but their specs seem to always underperform their hype.
  2. Considering his injuries and inability to provide power consistently...I think the baseline is more comfortable lower. I think your 20ish baseline is optimistic. Which is fine, the kid is certainly taking better at bats, that has been encouraging.
  3. Howard, Dunn, Morales come to mind. I think Morneau compares rather favorably especially with him being owed less money.
  4. Your right about all of those points but IMO the only explanation for it never happening is the union. It presents as being too owner friendly because it breaks the norm of increasing salaries for the benefit of the organization/ownership financials.
  5. Well, how are Wade Davis, Scott Kazmir, Delmon Young, and Tim Beckham doing these days? (Those are just four that sprung to mind, I'm sure there are others) I would say hope is more in Oakland A's pitching, the Cardinals, and the Braves. By and large, though, even teams that are very good at developing talent have guys fail when they hit the majors or the high minors. It's just part of the game, but the Royals offer a clear, current example for illustration.
  6. I was speaking in reference to utilizing their farm centrally, but not being afraid to trade and sign FA to augment their talent. Your entire post here misses the point of the blog. The point is that sometimes, even when a prospect gives you every reason to be excited, they still flop when they get to the big leagues. It's important to remember that prospects aren't a certainty. That's all, the bulk of your post is arguing against something that hasn't been put forward by anyone.
  7. I knew I was forgetting someone! Yeah, he would be the fifth guy in that scenario.
  8. Yeah, didn't want to lump those guys based on value, more on situation. I think Correia could fetch something interesting and I'm hoping we pull that trigger.
  9. Lack of better alternatives is the best way to summarize it.
  10. Pelfrey is a seven year vet. Worley is under team control and does not need to be "resigned". Just wanted to clarify two bizarre comments there. The 5 men that should be hurling for this team post deadline should be Diamond, Gibson, Worley, Albers, and it doesn't really matter. So if the Twins can get a little value for Correia or Pelfrey...do it. You can easily flush 10M to get similar talents again this next offseason.
  11. Eh, he had 192 ABs where his power spiked, but it didn't carry to the majors and he still hasn't found that power consistently. I'd say 15-20 is the much better prediction for him, it falls more in line with his career norms. I certainly don't think you can project more until he A) shows power more consistently and stays on the field. But my role for him has plenty of value. A guy that can play 3B, corner OF, and probably 1B with decent power and crushes lefties has a lot of value. The problem with that is that there are people that want to think he can be much more than that and I just don't think it's realistic. I'd still be plenty happy with what he can realistically provide.
  12. I made this point in the offseason, but there were people that were expecting Plouffe to be 20+ but he has never been a consistent 20+ HR hitter even in the minors. Much of his power came on one unearthly binge last year. As with his defense, until he can start to produce consistently, I'm not sure he's much more than a 15 HR guy with sub-par defense. Couple that with some durability concerns and I'm not sure he has much value. I've always felt his real value going forward was going to be as a bench bat that you could use to pound lefty starters.
  13. Front loading doesn't really happen in baseball. I'd argue because there is heavy union/peer pressure not to because those deals are seen as favoring ownership. It's a concept I think we all could get behind, but it's so non-existent that positing it even in a hypothetical doesn't seem realistic.
  14. He's...what?.....5th or 6th on the team leaderboard now with 1K?
  15. No one is advocating that. I've yet to see anyone who doesn't say "farm first"....that's simply a strawman. No one wants to be the Cubs....Nats, Cards, Braves...those are the examples used.
  16. Well....that "problem" is solved.
  17. I think for most people the double standard applies here. They think about how they'd feel if something they don't believe was there and how it would make them feel and choose not to do the same thing with their own faith. Imagine the outrage in some Christian circles if "Praise Allah" was written there.
  18. Wow, it's been years since I read Neyer, I need to get back on that. He was the only reason I used to frequent ESPN. He has some excellent points too.
  19. I'm not sure we have any more depth than they did then. I think the caution has to be carefully worded - I'm excited about the potential of our future, but wary to plan on it. When we hear a lot of people talking about how we spend our money or what we do in the offseason, it's always about "WHEN we get good" rather than "IF". As if we should wait because this certainty is around the corner. There is no certainty around the corner, rather we should be preparing for it actively. Prepare for the best, but don't plan on it. Maybe that's the best way I can say it succinctly.
  20. 5th worst ERA from the 7th inning on. 8-11 in one run games. 2-8 in extras.
  21. This blog expanded something I've been pointing out recently to some. We can't think of these players as certainties. A lot of the chatter on the forums lately has seemed awfully certain of future success.
  22. Exactly, I've been making this point off and on with people counting our prospects before they hatch. We can't think of these players as certainties.
  23. Exactly. I'm all about sell high, but Perkins doesn't fit that. The more I watch him the more he reminds me of Billy Wagner...I'd rather hold on to that commodity.
  24. What if it didn't just go away and you got bombarded with negativity about being "anti Christian". We have seen a very unwarranted shift to defensiveness from Christians about public displays lately.
