  1. My biggest worry is the potentially adverse effects on a still shaky economy. We could see some companies react to this (to save their own business model) in ways that dramatically shift employment for the worse.
  2. Part of being innovative is in talent acquisition as well as how you employ it. My issue with people on the opposite side of Mackey is that they basically adore this "Twins Way" and shun new and different ideas. Would you accept or endorse this kind of insulated, non-progressive resistance o new ideas from other professionals? Do you want your kids teacher ignoring new and better ideas to help your kid? How about your doctor? The Twins are basically using leeches (which have some value) and convincing some its the best and only method with limited attempts to modernize or look at other possibilities. It should be an unacceptable mentality.
  3. The only person I've heard suggest a shortcut was Ryan when he implied even Sano or Buxton could be available in a trade.
  4. Can I go one step further? How about a little less arrogance that you've got things under control when the ship has pretty much sank for three years? Yeah, you might think you can bring it up off the ocean floor, but quit telling us what an awesome captain you are.
  5. GMs are most certainly accountable to the public. If they weren't, they wouldn't hold press conferences. Like it or not, but part of Ryan's job is to engage the public in many different ways, including accountability. This entire premise flies in the face of radio shows, press conferences, interviews, etc.
  6. Intentionally losing is never a sound strategy. it has some benefits but its awful strategy.
  7. well, you are kind of pulling a number out of thin air here. It's only one season you based on and there is very little to concretely suggest the Twins take this path. In fact, I'd argue the Twins concentrate on the exact opposite. They just want semi competent innings at SP and a reduced bullpen role, not a featured one. Moreover, filling your rotation with mediocre players with no room for error makes your ERA mark infinitely harder to attain.
  8. Your final point has a number of flaws. First, having an ace and a good cheap bullpen are hardly mutually exclusive. Hell, is argue Ryan's prowess at rostering cheap, good bullpens actually should facilitate more spending on SP, not discourage it. Second, you are comparing apples to oranges - Verlander is still more valuable because his role is still far more crucial as an individual versus some conglomerate of guys with different roles. Third, you seem to be minimizing the value of starting pitching. Having a rotation of guys like Feldman and Correia might keep you vaguely competitive if your offense is great but it has no margin for error. We saw this with our collapse - when guys like Blackburn or Diamond fail....they fail HARD. A guy like Verlander has a down year and he's still a damn fine pitcher. Good bullpens are a luxury you seek when you are competing, rotations are essential to compete. And fourthly, cost effectiveness need not be our primary concern. That mentality is a major part of the problem.
  9. right but you are essentially agreeing with an article that says the exact opposite. It belittles the need for top flight talent and the supposed innovation that calls for that. I say that as someone that agrees with you. I think the postseason is largely a crapshoot, it's while you will never hear me dog Ryan, Gardy, Mauer, or anyone else for playoff failures. We found unique and maddening ways to get swept every year. But that does not excuse poor roster construction and an unwillingness to be aggressive at least occasionally. Some of the same people praising his innovation are ones proud to call him old school. Last I checked, those definitions don't mesh. Ryan does many things well (doesnt make any catastrophically bad trades/moves for example) but the arrogance toward new, different, or potentially ahead of the curve trends is staggering and very discomforting. They can, and should in some ways, have confidence in their methods. But like any business or sports or life model - resistance to change and evolution is only oing to lead to negative outcomes overall. Certainly to limited potential.
  10. How about better examples then? For instance, rule one referenced a rotation Ryan didnt preside over. A few of these are true about our approach, but most are too general.
  11. Um....so we are saying the Twins didnt make the World Series because of a lack of grind it out pitchers? I would suggest that had little to nothing o do with our playoff failures. Bad offense, bullpen implosions, and baffling player decisions on the field were to blame IMO. the problem with this analysis is that it is way too generalized. I would argue the Twins notion of solid and unspectacular pitching is in desperate need of change. It doesn't have to be 5 aces, but it damn sure cant be five Blackburn clones either. That mentality, by Ryan as posted above, is THE main reason we are where we are right now. And even the Twins have woke up to that reality if their recent drafts are any indication.
  12. I think that's important too. They sold a lot of season tickets (part of my theory about the hold the all-star game has had) but the park is almost never as full as the attendance states. I wish we could get our hands on season ticket figures.
  13. Well, even if you can find that number you'll have to also find out how many of them were busy preparing the parade route. I think we'll start seeing that backlash coming soon if this offseason is underwhelming. Target Field, in all it's brilliant glory, is masking some larger issues.
  14. And talk is cheap. Until the results happen its hot air you are spewing, it is irrelevant to evaluating the present.
  15. Thank you Mackey....Ryan has had a series of maddening quotes lately. This organization is going to start feeling some serious heat for this arrogant, flippant garbage.
  16. Good god, someone in the organization muzzle Ryan until he does something this offseason. Now thy are citing Vegas odds? If someone had said that in March they'd have been laughed off as a negative. They just keep digging holes.
  17. My understanding was that they preferred our offer until Ramos got hurt.
  18. you realize the reason that isn't happening is because the matter is subjective, not clear. Not only tht, but many aren't asking for him to be fired out of incompetence but more for the need of organizational change and accountability. Frankly, your demands are a poor starting point for any reasonable discussion.
  19. If you are waiting for Gardy to make some profound mistake to justify firing him.... It will never happen. That just isn't how baseball works, managers don't have that much control. That's partly why I'm neutral as well, but I don't like the insinuation he hasn't done enough to be fired. He never will, that can't be the reasoning for moving on.
  20. I'd settle for a few less young guys being used as the guys to throw under the media bus. I can tolerate a lot of Gardys tendencies but that drives me nuts.
  21. If Gardy kept his job because Ryan knows he gave him a crap roster, then Ryan is the problem. Some would agree to that, but many here want to defend both out of both sides of their mouth. Personally, I think Ryan's delusions about meaningful September games is far more the issue than Gardy.
  22. Overall I think firing or not firing Gardy is a non-factor to the teams success. My bigger issue is how good ol boy, insulated, and resistant to new ideas/methods the organization is as a whole.
  23. Man we are totally firing some interns to shake it up!
  24. Evidence is less important when truth is a secondary concern, so you are likely barking up the wrong tree.
  25. I stopped reading after he insinuated the team was in meaningful September games because the other teams cared. I'd rather not see if he tried to top that doozy.
