  1. Adding a better pitcher and dumping a worse one doesn't continue a cycle of mediocrity. Clutching on to bad pitchers in the name of depth and ignoring better ones? Now that sounds like cyclical mediocrity to me. (Or worse)
  2. Reusse was absolutely right in his column. That's part of what makes this signing so refreshing.
  3. That isn't a fair comparison. Baker is going to be cheaper with higher upside. Hughes should be taken over Pelfrey and Baker should be signed as a cheaper, riskier gamble. Pelfrey may indeed pitch better, the problem is will he pitch anywhere close to earning the salary and roster spot, they'll give him. This is a team that should be targeting high ceilings, not high floors.
  4. Except the stats don't back your opinion. His career splits against the central teams have half of them being below his career ERA (CLE and KCR)and the other two above his career ERA (CHW and DET). The "cracked under pressure" notion is subjective. His biggest issue was his inability to stay on the mound due to injury. But when healthy, he was a vastly underrated pitcher by this fanbase.
  5. Because they're consumed with sports radio talk rather than actual analysis. If this team got Hughes and Baker along with Nolasco, I'd be one happy little Twins fan.
  6. I don't disagree, but the Twins also just recently added to that glut for reasons I can't figure out. Someone will have to go off the 40 man, what I don't understand is why they added some of the glut there already.
  7. I'd have no problem going three years. He may get hurt or underperform, but he represents maybe the best chance to overachieve on the return on investment out of any starting pitcher on the market. Let's hope these rumors are accurate.
  8. I was expecting a thread full of tongue-in-cheek jokes as a way of saying thanks for our first significant FA move in decades. I'm a bit of a sad panda now.
  9. I'd give a 9.....just because it represents a sea change in the organization.
  10. Yup, really nice to see them throw that kind of money around.
  11. If the budget or something else was a factor, there would be plenty of reasons to be down about this move. But frankly, we should all just throw those concerns out the window and be thrilled that the team's mentality it changing. They're actually using the resources at their disposal. They're doing more than sitting on their hands. They're using an avenue that is pretty much unprecedented. They could have given him 7 years and 150M and I'd still be praising it. It's so refreshing to see them climbing out of their self-imposed box. Keep it up!
  12. 4/52 would be great just as a change of pace for this team's approach to contracts.
  13. I'm going to be curious to see what the dollars were. But a good, aggressive start. This is what we didn't get last year, so I'm glad it's finally being addressed.
  14. I worry the Twin's internal policies about extensions could make this notion moot.
  15. Your problem is that you're arguing what would be a sensible way for the Twins to approach FA. And we've seen ample evidence that they don't approach it sensibly. Pelfrey is evidence of the same tired strategies and I just don't want to see him signed until those strategies have gone away.
  16. Arcia has team control too. More of it, in fact. So I'm not sure how that's a difference maker. Also, why exactly is this team desperate for bullpen? I haven't read any reports to indicate that and they haven't made any definitive call on Chapman yet. I think it's presumptive to think they're looking for bullpen given their depth there already. Let's also stop pretending Dozier is a huge trade chip. He had an encouraging year last year, but it was also driven by a relatively new aspect to his game - power. He typically was a get-on-base type of hitter but last year his OPS was driven more by the slug then the OBP. Realistically, no one is going to consider him a prime trade chip until he establishes that it wasn't a fluke. We're doing something very common here - overvaluing our own player's trade value. (Hell, the very fact that Plouffe was mentioned is ridiculous) Bailey isn't going to be cheap and I highly doubt we'll like what would have to be given up from our roster.
  17. You're right, you said 4M (2/8) after someone else said 3. This post is closer - I think 2/12 is probably the cheapest you can expect. And while you might believe he's only guaranteed a rotation spot that long, I'm not sure the Twins would operate that way. Moreover, it's not how long into the season he's guaranteed, it's that it may alter your offseason plans to already fill an open slot with a pitcher of his caliber rather than one much better.
  18. The biggest problem is that all your arguments seemed predicated on a salary that I think is a ridiculous underestimatw. Double your 3M (minimum) and then reassess. Pelfreyis a guaranteed rotation spot if signed. I'd rather not do that until the superior options sign here or elsewhere.
  19. This argument feels like someone saying they're the best hockey player in Mexico......Congratulations?
  20. I don't think the Twins would be able to do this without Arcia in the offer. Rosario's value took a hit with the suspension, so he can't be a centerpiece. You also have to take into account that this is a team in the mode to win now, so your offer has to be built around instant or very close contributors. I like Bailey, but I'm not sure what it'd take to get him from the Twins is a pill you'll want to swallow.
  21. 3M per year? Why would he take a pay cut? If we offered him two years, I'm guessing the total value is going to be closer to 10-15. Which would be a bit infuriating. If we sign him I have a feeling that what we'll regret most of all is not getting a team option or multi-year deal last year.
  22. I think most media reports about team activity are relatively accurate. I'm not sure what value there is in being a complete agnostic about the process. If you're going to limit discourse about baseball only insofar as what any of us are....my guess is most of us should disband this site and open up a forum about beer league softball and save all conversations about professional baseball to those several hundred people that applies to. I guess I've just never found much credence in those arguments.
  23. Maybe, but it would be nice to have at least one capable, known commodity at catcher on the roster. kab's right, CF should've been a lesson on being obviously thin at a premium defensive position.
  24. You're trying WAY too hard to defend something that doesn't need defending. As Brock said, most guys haven't signed and most teams probably aren't tossing a lot of offers around. It's ok that the Twins haven't. It's not something to be hung up on yet. But how does it make any sense to deny taking offers? Denying offers surely has no more connection to generating interest than taking offers does. The whole connection you're trying to make is flimsy. Teams have that initial valuation whether they offer or not. It's part of their scouting and offseason preparation. All denying offers does is make sure you A) miss out on being blown out of the water by someone or having nothing to use as leverage when offers do start rolling in. What you're suggesting doesn't make any sense at all and I think you're a bit blind to that by your motivation for posting it. It's ok, the Twins don't need a blind defense here. It's perfectly ok that they haven't bid yet. Even if some of us have a lot of angst about whether they will at all, it's still ok.
  25. Why would less offers drum up interest? The best way to push up value is to create competition among offers, not suppress them. Im not worried that we haven't offered anything yet, but c'mon, lets not contort common sense.
