  1. I disagree. Normally the Twins are not this active in their public involvement. Part of the problem last year was not only an utter disaster of results, it was the seemingly pathetic effort. The Twins told us they were active, but no one nation-wide picked up on that. This year, they are picking up on it. Which tells me, at the very least, we're being significantly more aggressive. That's at least encouraging.
  2. Pinto is also young, I'm not sure sacrificing him helps him develop as part of a long term plan. That has to be factored as well.
  3. Even if it's a smokescreen or a half effort negotiation, this is still a step forward. Last year they not only completely failed at FA, they didn't even give the appearance of trying. It's easier to sell "Hey, we tried our hardest" when there is at least some evidence you were.
  4. I like Navarro too, better fit for Target Field IMO.
  5. That's encouraging.
  6. Yeah I'd add Baker to this too. I still think he can turn things around.
  7. 5 and 90? Did Johan teach the organization nothing?
  8. This is a good point that isn't being emphasized enough. The Twins need to invest in their own product if they want fans to do the same.
  9. Hypocrisy is an accurate description of maintaining contradictory arguments on a related point. There is no name calling to it, just an accurate descriptor. It's not in good form to decry the contract of, say, Sanchez and then laud a move like this. Especially if you emphasize risks associated with aging.
  10. It's a pretty valid concern that a guy who is this old already has lost that much velocity. But like I said, I'd just be thrilled by the expansion of effort this represents. Also, there is some real hypocrisy in the notion that three years for a 37 year old is a good thing but five years to a 29 year old is too risky.
  11. I tend to agree, especially with a guy like Miller and the Card's situation. I don't think they're going to want players significantly far from reaching the majors unless they get a ridiculous haul. Their trade chips are all about enhancing their current product because they have the financial resources and high-level depth.
  12. To make a joke about the Twins usual free agent pitching targets and their current staff. See: Correia or Sidney Ponson. Or Jason Marquis. I'm sure I violated some sort of policy and that's why you're bullying my attempt at fun out of the thread. My apologies for cracking a joke and including an obvious tongue-in-cheek smiley face with it.
  13. There was a face. With a tongue.
  14. Boras is also on a propaganda campaign today. He took to task a number of teams specifically in order to spur their fanbases to clamor for more spending. I'm not sure any agent commenting on a team should be taken seriously regardless of their tone. There is always an ulterior motive driving it. I mean, hell, that's their job basically.
  15. Well, yeah...but what about the "good" part? I assume that's relatively speaking?
  16. Last year was a dip, but you're still talking about an elite defender who had an OPS+ of 107 and 110 the previous two years. He's not the special player he was hoped to be, but given his ability defensively at a premium position and relative offensive strength - he's going to be extremely pricey. I'm just not sure he's worth it given the Twins will be unlikely to retain him long-term.
  17. I don't like that we aren't changing our targets in terms of profile, but I'd celebrate any deal that we go out and spend 10+ a year on for 2-3 years. If nothing else it'd be reason for hope and a damn starting point for better things in the future.
  18. Thats an odd attack considering my point has been consistent. Here it is.....again....Mauer breaking down was never a guarantee. Nor was keeping him from a concussion with a move. The only guarantee is tht the Twins will suffer worse catcher play for as far as the eye can see after this move. That will hurt the team, how much remains to be seen. It's another hurdle to a team with plenty already. All the tangents you've taken it on just ignore what's a pretty simple point that others on this very thread have basically said "well, yeah, that's obvious". Why you've taken issue with it is beyond me.
  19. Its dubious to claim that as a certainty. He very well could have still been doing that in two years. Plenty of catchers have been very productive in their early 30s. Not to mention, you don't adjust until you have to. In this case, we had to for medical reasons. Not production. You continue to take issue with a simple point - if his production stayed up, would they want to move him? Absolutely not. So it's disappointing that while he still is producing that this choice was forced with no clear backup plan. It adds another hurdle to a team with enough of them already. Couching this as fixing some hypothetical in three years to ignore the very real, current problem is really straining to miss the point.
  20. im pointing out this isn't all roses. It does make our rebuild more difficult. But, as I have said, it looks like there was no choice. Personally, I'd have rather seen them rest him a year or two an return him later. But this seems to be medically driven so I doubt that option exists.
  21. they haven't been, only recently did thy start to. It's a glaring a hole until filled, in part because of how good Mauer was.
  22. you're not listening. It's not about Mauer, it's about the Twins losing great production at a premium position. Career longevity is utterly irrelevant to that. It's not in dispute because it has nothing to do with the point I've made repeatedly.
  23. Alright, one more try at it.....I'm not blaming the Twins. It doesn't sound like there was much choice. But it wouldn't be a "miracle" tht a guy in his early thirties would still be catching. Nor unreasonable to have planned for him to be catching then. Additionally there is no guarantee this lengthens anything. the only guarantee is that this opens a position the Twins are totally unprepared to fill where they previously had a significant advantage over the vast majority of other teams. That has significant potential to be a negative now and going forward.
  24. You didn't answer the question - where is it easier to find a plus defender and plus hitter? It's easily t first base, it's really not debatable. Doesn't mean the Twins can't do it, but they just made their rebuilding job more difficult. Out of necessity, no doubt, but no less disappointing.
  25. The whole problem is you are arguing a scarecrow. My point has been all along that the nations surrounding Israel are archaic and stuck in centuries old blood feuds. You made it about religion. I was consistent in talking about leadership as well, not the general populace. Religion plays a factor, usually as a tool of the leadership to justify archaic s practice. Whether it is "true" to the religion or not is irrelevant to me. All religions could use that escape clause and I don't buy it for them either. it boils down to this for me: If Israel gave up all lands not originally given to them, demilitarized, opened their borders, and shared economic resources.....would they have peace? And the answer, in my eyes to anyone not living in a dream world, is no...they wouldn't. If, on the other hand, Their neighbors committed 100% to eradicating terrorism, compromising on territory, and disavowing all acts of hostility....would there be peace? Yes, I think there would be. Thats the whole point. Blame Israel when deserved, but don't kid yourself about where the problems truly lie.
