  1. Eh....if acquiring him means taking on those option years I'm far less thrilled. Tabata is a guy that doesn't bring a lot of power or speed and he's not elite defensively. If he elects FA than I'm on board, but only at a very reasonable price.
  2. Right and here's the money quote: And let's face it....there is FAR more money in it for the league to care what ESPN thinks and not what a bunch of hometown rubes think.
  3. Tabata was once a promising prospect. With this team's CF issues I'd take a flyer on him.
  4. Jesus Dave. Target Field is going to be sold out for the Derby whether Willingham hits in it or not. They throw bones to the hometeam during the softball games and all the other extra crap. The homerun derby is one of two nationally prominent broadcasts the league gets out of it. They want their marquee sluggers in it to hype the event. Not friggin Willingham.
  5. Which do you think MLB cares more about - throwing yet another bone to the hometown team or the enormous television audience it's hoping to sell the product towards? Cmon Dave.
  6. So your theory is Willingham will make it because he stinks and Bautista will think he can beat him? At that point why doesn't Bautista pick Fuld, Aoki, Eatan, and Bradley Jr.? I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that isn't baseball's intent with this so it's not going to happen.
  7. This is very true. Still....I don't see the Twins giving up on him. I do think (thankfully) he's not coming back to the big leagues until he's demonstrated the ability to be ready for it. That might be awhile.
  8. It's the one thing I really hate about people glorifying the books so far above the show. The show is capturing the best of the book series. It's capturing the emotional essence of it. Is it including every nook and cranny? No. It's also not needlessly exploring every dead-end because it seems cool. (How I feel like Martin writes sometimes) He's created a truly epic fantasy realm and story, but god does he need someone to slap him upside the head and say "focus!" from time to time.
  9. Even still, I find the idea of Willingham making it slim. Bautista is going to choose the five best sluggers he can.
  10. Doesn't the guy have to be an actual all-star to be in the derby? Seems that would eliminate Willingham and Mauer....
  11. This is very correct. As someone who also married Chicagoan I have found the more of them around each other causes an exponential increase in insufferability.
  12. This, again, was not hard to see coming with his rapidly escalating strikeout rate last year. Let him work through it, that's part of what rebuilding is - patience with kids who have shown what they can do.
  13. This is all well and good, but when you are both A) Not successful hitting and Waffling about an integral part of your approach. Those are giant red flags, like it or not. This kid needs a LONG reboot at AAA. At this point if we see him before June of next year it might too soon.
  14. I heard he also doesn't like America or puppies. We should cut him.
  15. I wish this thread would've never started. I had just recently forgot that Mike Pelfrey existed and was inexplicably signed for another season. Now I remember that again. Thanks.
  16. The Hicks story just keeps getting more bizarre by the day.
  17. This may be helpful also: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23950
  18. The problem lies with your attempt to make sense of what is essentially toddler logic for problem solving.
  19. The thread in question indicates your suggestion is actually the reverse. You seem to forget someone already ate a pitch for that this year.
  20. Unwritten rules require you to eat a fastball for it and then all go wrestle over it at the pitchers mound like 4 year olds. So, in other words, no good reason not to.
  21. Well, no. Truly they are a sub .500 team by most any measure I can see. Though I grant if they get themselves a monkey's paw or some kind of sacred pact with a diety that allows everything to go right for them that they could be better than that going forward. I'll keep saying it - I expect Meyer and May to get called up and struggle, because that's what typically happens with young players. Their presence this year is an investment ala Gibson. We shouldn't expect anything more than that. (Though we may be pleasantly surprised too)
  22. I have to see the Twins get involved seriously in negotiating with a Cuban player. They just seem disinterested in this particular market regardless of the talent.
  23. I would totally agree. They should at least entertain what people are willing to give for him. One thing working in favor of retaining/extending him is that the available catching options next season are very slim. Given Pinto's defensive deficiencies that could be a factor we can't ignore. (Although, on the flip side of that, keeping Suzuki around only inspires our manager to play him instead of Pinto)
  24. Many of the things discussed here are based on some anonymous person talking to someone. It's the basis for a very large percentage of what beat writers discuss and is subsequently discussed here. And while you can argue about minor league stat sheets, we also know how completely misleading those can be. The minors are a different animal and most organizations (including the Twins) seem to rely more on what their coaching staffs are seeing for readiness than what their stat lines are telling them for readiness. You can pretend this is some higher level of information, but it's not. It's one piece of a puzzle you're trying to put together in the dark. I think you can draw reasonable conclusions and opinions from this sort of information...but I'm not so foolish as to demand certainty or transparency as you're doing. It's not possible. What I provided was a variety of sources identifying the same thing: Willingham was not being entertained. Not in any kind of serious way. (More in the: sure, I'll take your Carl Yzstremski card for this Omar Vizquel card!) That's the mistake and there is ample evidence to know it happened. The why it happened is what people like Chief are speculating on. There may have been a good reason why they didn't want to pull the trigger on a deal. However, there is no good reason to put up a front that scares away suitors.
