  1. Guess posts are disappearing. In any case, it may be true that pitchers have a great deal of control, but defense has a very real and a perceptual impact on run prevention. I think you and the organization might be too dismissive of the impact.
  2. Fits our OF defensive profile.
  3. If sacrifices are not just bunts, then why were all of your examples about bunts? Also - how many pitchers are utilizing sacrifice hits? I assume the stats bear out that this happens frequently enough to justify a bunch of .300 OPS strikeout padders? I'm fine with small ball, but small ball can be played with a DH. That's the part you need to explain - why is not having a DH absolutely necessary to play small ball? If it's not, why are we wasting our time with pitcher batting?
  4. Clarify then, because from what I read every one of your arguments seems to be defending bunting. Or that you want bunting to continue. Here is what you said: 1) Hitters are "too prideful" - so is it your contention you need guys so bad at hitting that they don't worry about pride and therefore bunt more? 2) Something about managers having their cleanup hitters bunt....is that happening in the NL? If not, I'm not sure how this distinction matters unless you want to keep a certain type of hitter in the lineup expressly for bunting. 3) You credited all the non-throwing time pitchers have to bunt. I'm confused how you can make that thesis, use those arguments, and then bristle at the notion that you really just want no DH so that you see more bunting from guys so disinterested in being a hitter that they rarely run and mostly stand around in wind-breakers on the base paths.
  5. So basically you like bunts so much you want feeble guys in wind breakers at the plate to see them? That's not particularly compelling.
  6. Why do you have to have a pitcher bat to do this?
  7. It's not even a clear three months, it's like mid-June to mid-August and that's only if you don't coach or do other things. It's not like it's three scot-free months. So yeah, you basically have to be a mercenary for construction crews or Green Giant or something to find summer work. That's something you do when you're 16, not 36.
  8. My point wasn't to build Bill Smith a statue, but to suggest that those that want to bury him in order to prop up Ryan aren't really being fair. They both had plenty of blame and credit for the circumstances we've endured the last few years and the hope we hold for the future.
  9. I think you know what people are saying though. The first argument out of anyone's mouth in defense of the NL not having a DH is that it has a "special" brand of baseball with more "strategy". Sure, in a literal sense of the word "strategy", they both do have that. But is the brand of the NL really all that special? Is it worth the obnoxious at-bats of pitchers hitting? If you don't like people dismissing it - tell me what is so sacred that's worth protecting? I'd contend the case against pitchers batting is pretty rock solid and shouldn't need to be laid out.
  10. In addition to being unfair that they can't negotiate a larger piece of the pie, giving MiLB is an investment in the game. If you're an athlete, do you really want to sit around making peanuts for five years when the other leagues offer substantially more? Baseball has a massive pie to divide, it's ridiculous in every possible way and for all parties, to keep giving such a tiny slice to a vital component of the games health. Also, as a teacher, the myth about getting a summer job is way overplayed. That doesn't happen because it's almost impossible to arrange for the vast majority.
  11. Yeah, the myth of NL "strategy" is alive and well and every bit as silly as ever. Time for that myth to die along with pitchers batting.
  12. I really hope they were for a CF. I can forgive trying and failing. The last two years that position has just been a series of failures and seemingly ignored problems, that I can't forgive.
  13. I know we've talked about this a bit before, but figured we might bring these to a larger audience. I know there are some OOTP fans here - any leagues you recommend or things you've found enjoyable? I'm a Baseball Mogul guy (More out of tradition than anything else) and currently am active in a league that is coming on it's fifth year in existence. Might be a place to drum up some support or interest I thought as well. The league I'm in is at firstclassmogul.com
  14. Under Smith we added these guys: Hicks, Ortiz, Tonkin, Dozier, Gibson, Rosario, Sano, Vargas, and Danny Santana. To name just the highlights. Smith made a tremendous number of mistakes and had a bad 2010 draft (so far), but Ryan didn't exactly ride in on his white horse. He's made some damn fine picks but we wouldn't be this deep and this good (even as we graduate players) if they both didn't deserve a ton of credit.
  15. Thrylos is right - the minor league fix has to be from both the union and the league as both have worked actively to create the abysmal situation we know today. That, to me, should be the top priority of anyone in charge of baseball.
  16. I agree, I was speaking generally about baseball. In the Twins' case this has been coming for awhile. Over and over again this organization has sent the wrong message publicly, even when they were being successful and those chickens are coming home to roost. I will give them some credit for not following their typical pattern of shutting down even tighter when they don't see profits ahead, but as you say it's still only a fraction of what they are capable of spending.
  17. I couldn't agree more, I think baseball is going to see some blowback in the not too distant future. I used to be a 25 game package guy and now I can't justify more than a once a year family tradition game.
  18. I'm confused by how people are supposed to earn or lose their spot. Are people seriously suggesting we take ST results seriously? The point is that May should be first in line barring injury or opposing teams batting 1.000 off of him.
  19. This thread makes me think....Spring Training....how far away is that?
  20. Nothing wrong with a little personality, hope he does well!
  21. Yeah, we don't have to tar and feather Terry Ryan and the other decision makers. Just, you know, make them eat Lutefisk until they agree to reverse their decision.
  22. Can we all agree to peacefully riot if it's Pelfrey?
  23. If it's still a question mark, I'd really like to see another piece of competition join what has so far been assembled.
  24. Sorry, I'm not one to always bash the Twins but they've sort of lost my trust on defense. Their whole roster setup alone is evidence o'plenty they arent thinking straight. Chalk me up as someone that took Ryan as being awfully positive in his endorsement of Hunters defense, far more than I'm comfortable with at least.
