  1. And the more I watch that the more I'm convinced that ball could've been caught.
  2. It was a deke because he realized he wasn't catching it, but he also wasn't anywhere near the ball or in a good position for that carom off the wall. He is a good 20 feet too far towards right field for where that ball eventually hit. It's the first time we've seen a mistake like this since he's been up though.
  3. Trusting them to replace Boyer turning into a pumpkin or an injury is awfully dicey.
  4. Even if the bullpen has been good thus far, it's also riding a select few arms really, really hard. That doesn't bode well for the stretch run.
  5. Considering you and others are telling us that his radio shows are the beacon of reason into these decisions, I would think the content of what he's saying matters quite a bit. And, again, you and others are getting frustrated at criticisms levied at what the Twins are doing and justifying the Twins stance based on what they are saying. That's part of the root of the problem here. From what I can see, there isn't a very good justification for the current roster construction. Vargas was trying to adjust to big league pitching, particularly big league off-speed pitching. You really think he's seeing that in AAA? I believe the send-down of Vargas has less to do with his development and more about the team's desire to play certain guys and utilize the DH spot in a different way.
  6. Love your post. I have the same feeling.
  7. I was just noticing that a few weeks ago, I miss his snark.
  8. Here is where I start to have a problem. Is Ryan a reasonable and thoughtful guy? Absolutely. But he uses the same handful of phrases as his reasons - "not forcing his way up", "we want to see him do a couple different things", "He's a work in progress" or whatever other buzzword he wants. And in isolation they are reasonable, the problem comes in when you start to look how the same buzzword/justification is used in different situations. This is when the whole logical structure breaks down and, I feel, that most of what he says publicly is just smart nonsense. And by that I mean he's not really telling you anything of meaning, but he's making it sound like he is. It's smart on his part because there is value in him hiding the real reasons. But please don't tell me what he says on the radio show has much meaning. What is done is far more significant. And what is being done right now? Two guys who are not playing well (for a stretch much longer than 10 games by the way) are being run out there every day. Sometimes in lieu of a much better player. (DH) While the pretense for this is "no one is forcing their way up". If what Vargas is doing isn't forcing his way up, I'm not sure what he could possibly do. He's absolutely slaughtering the baseball while we waste the DH spot on a utility guy and our SS flounders. I like Ryan. I'm happy with the overall job he's doing. But the logic on the SS/DH/LF roster decisions is absolutely mind boggling and his placating answers on a radio show don't fix that.
  9. Fro and I talked a lot before he left, I tried really hard to get him to stay.
  10. I don't know who I'd deal, but I'd be targeting guys like Clippard or Brad Ziegler or someone of that ilk. I don't need them to even be that lights out, but we're going to need more depth and probably very soon.
  11. Yeah, there were some obviously telegraphed deaths coming. No doubt. Though, while watching, I thought they were telegraphing the giant's death as well and that didn't happen. But, yeah, those last few minutes with the stare down were ridiculously tense and awesome. Amazing how they took a chunk of the book that Martin made an after-thought (via Ravens) and the show turned it into a massive hit.
  12. Man I miss me some TROLPO.
  13. Wouldn't they pretty much end up the same way?
  14. And in reverse - remember all the great chemistry the A's had? Well all those characters stayed last year and they were awful in the second half. Suddenly that chemistry talk went away then too.
  15. Given how hard some of our bullpen arms are being ridden, I think an early deal for a reliever may be a very wise decision. Doesn't have to be Chapman, but an aggressive move in that regard would be one I welcome this year.
  16. I've heard that as well. Fingers crossed this movie project finally gets rolling.
  17. We do need to fire up more political chatter.
  18. I was a huge proponent of going with Molitor over Mientciewicz and some of that is coming out this year. The team is really focused on the little things, they are using analytics like never before, and Molitor brings a borderline neurotic approach to the job. For whatever Gardy's strengths were they were almost exclusively "old school". Molly is a nice blend of old school and new school and I really dig that. I was also totally wrong about the value of bringing Hunter on. He's been far better than anyone expected.
  19. That's not a number. You're breaking our awesome thread.
  20. Personally, I never thought pitch recognition or strike zone discipline were the issues. It's the fact he can't get the ball out of the infield when he makes contact. Until that changes I could really care less about any of his plate discipline metrics.
  21. There are a few of us stragglers.
  22. Right, the money the Twins are paying Brian is likely what they would have paid him anyway, regardless of his performance. How much of a bargain it is will likely be pretty minimal in the long run. So, for me, it's pretty inconsequential to his success. But it's nice to see their confidence being rewarded with Dozier's play.
  23. Dozier has sweet hair. I'd also like to suggest a new statistical correlation to consider - beard length and RBI totals.
  24. A good contrast for sure. The Dark Tower is close to my heart. Now you've gone and made me consider picking it up from square one again.
