  1. I would agree that this approach has improved much for the better, but that doesn't change my point that he has openly expressed disdain for that element of his job. I don't know about you, but the parts of my job I like the least aren't the ones I'm in a rush to go do. In TwinsDaily terms I'm guessing this is like the "Dealing with Dave" problem.
  2. Right but the point is more that when there are elements to something Ryan doesn't enjoy, we see a lot less quality work done on his part. The Torii/Johan non-negotiations hurt this team and so does is passive attitude towards trading. I don't need a gunslinger, but I sure don't want the guy hiding behind the hay wagon either.
  3. Sex has played a larger role this year due to the storyline, so not really.
  4. I'm sure the workload is shared to varying degrees, but he has openly stated his disdain for whatever role he does play. When you are the guy in charge those values will influence your subordinates.
  5. Ryan's aversions to contracts and trading make hi. Well suited to an assistant role but not as the primary GM, IMO.
  6. I agree on all but #3. Next year May needs to be back in the rotation, but guys like Duffy, Meyer, Jay, and others need to be in these spots and not aged retreads. But I'm resigned to the fact that for the rest of 2015 May will be there.
  7. Our exchange was part of a larger point I made at the outset.
  8. Since it didn't start at all with that you may want yo go back and check. I think Ryan deserves criticism, but I also think much of it went off the rails.
  9. He's just not locating well right now.
  10. I'm not defending Ryan, his risk aversion is too extreme, but some critics here fail to be much better by sitting on the other extreme.
  11. I am certainly interested in some day hearing what the hell they were thinking with May this year. And Arcia for that matter.
  12. What if they cut Boyer like they should have done weeks ago?
  13. That's one of many factors that makes this notion impossible. "Just get it done regardless", in my eyes, is every bit as bad as a paranoid fear of losing prospects in part because of how unrealistic it is for this and many other reasons.
  14. I not defending his record, I'm taking issue with the meme that any season you compete you unload at the deadline and all that matters is if you get the deal done. That's the absurdity we've reached at times and I would never want a real GM to take that approach. But their is a vast middle ground as well. If anyone but Ryan had stood still here we'd more easily understand it (as every national publication I've read has). So let's focus on watching this group build to a point deserving a more aggressive tact IMO.
  15. Exactly diehard, just because we can imagine a better trade package we would accept doesn't mean that it's what the other team wants. Completing a trade in real life isn't a video game, there are a myriad of factors at play. Judging success or failure merely by whether a deal gets done or not is quite naive and unfair. And I'd say that is doubly so at the deadline.
  16. You may be right, I just can't make sense of their interest in that package. As I said initially, it was quite underwhelming. But closing big deals isn't always as easy as we on message boards would like. People should remember that an empty deadline isn't always a bad thing or always the fault of the GM. Sometimes it is, but not always.
  17. We know that he offered a competitive package for Soriano back in the day but refused to give Perkins or Garza. i do agree that he should be more daring/aggressive. I disagree that he HAS to because we are competitive this year (or any competitive year)
  18. Since I specifically said he has missed opportunities to do so in the past, the answer is yes. But should he have done it every single year in that span? That's the problem I have with many of the complaints. To me the price, the player, the team control, the teams contention window, and a myriad of other factors have to be weighed so the answer should vary. Not always be "yes".
  19. I agree but that doesn't mean it happens and we tend to judge based only on results and not the effort. Which isn't fir to the process. I'm not defending Ryan, but all you have to do is read those leaked Houston trade offers and have a taste of that bizarre world. That said, I will be very upset with Ryan if this offseason isn't aggressive, but I'm ok being patient right now.
  20. If you were privy to the calls, please help us out. But it leaks all the time (see:Kimbrel for Goldschmidt) how absurd these negotiations usually are. I'd tend to believe the team was likely asked for some painful packages to get what you think they should have done.
  21. Most people speculated a 3 way first, then him building value until the offseason, then a salary dump, etc. That tells me no one can figure it out because it doesn't make sense. But, yes, we should have been in on it trying to beat it.
  22. As for going for Upton or Lucroy or whomever, I don't see the failure to act as the problem per se. There is a decent shot every player like that the Twins called about May have started with "Berrios, Bux, or Sano or we hang up". To which I'd agree to hang up. Tulo seems to be a special case of Rockies stupidity in wanting Reyes, a guy we have no equivalent for.
  23. I'm fine with that and, as I said, they should have been in on Tulo. I just don't see them having the key piece (Reyes) that made that happen. But a Price move? No. This isn't the year for that and there is little effort by some to distinguish these moves other than just rage pouting about "going for it" and magical years. The beauty of the Shields deal was anticipation and patience. Now is the time for patience and this offseason is the time for aggression and anticipation. It's fair, however, to have serious doubts about Ryan doing the latter. I sure know I have them.
  24. See I think there was a very small group saying one good reliever and one solid one would be sufficient. (I belong in that group) Though, I guess to be fair most people raging out about the Jays don't really know what the hell they really want other than some video game trading fantasy ala Toronto. This just wasn't the ideal time for that, though again in fairness, most of us were here during multiple playoff runs where there was an imperative to do much more than what got done. That's a huge source of a lot of this misplaced frustration.
  25. It's my opinion that the meme around that "remotely competitive=need to go all in" is really tired. This isn't the year to feel that itch, though they should always explore their options. The problem, for me, is that I have no confidence in Ryan to do it even when that time comes. But many people are having trouble separating those two ideas from my estimation. For now I'm happy to watch Rosario, Hicks, Sano, and others establish their major league cred in a playoff race for however long it lasts.
