  1. Right, for a few million dollars they can put stooges in Washington to give them huge kickbacks. Way less risk, way better bang for your buck. I have many quibbles with Bernie, but on the campaign finance reform he is very much correct.
  2. Also, if you believe states can be the labrotory of democracy, we have seen the ultimate Republican dream before: Kansas. Any amount of research into that debacle will show the folly of going too far.
  3. When was the last time a Republican administration balanced the budget or reduced the spending of government? It has nothing to do with Donald Trump or even his policies, it has everything to do with the fact that they don't actually do it when they're in power. Feeding more money to the bloated military is not conservative. Feeding more money to shareholders while the middle class lacks spending power is not conservative. I'm not sure what to call it exactly, but it isn't conservative. You should consider what your principles are and if the party you're voting actually does care about them. Or if they've just convinced you, against all evidence to the contrary, that they do.
  4. I'm saying money in the economy has been flowing out of the middle class for decades. Even Republicans agree how bad this is for the economy, they just don't do anything but compound the problem with their tax legislation. Corporations getting billions and me getting $500 bucks is not as good as corporations getting millions and me getting $5,000. And guess who else that would be better for? Everyone. Including corporations and jobs. Funneling money to shareholders only helps shareholders.
  5. Your ideas are hurting the economy and hurting people. And they aren't even resulting in smaller government. I don't know how anyone can be ok with that. I used to be a small government libertarian, but as views like yours have continued to go down unreasonable paths you have forced me to vote blue. This tax cut is nothing more than windfalls for shareholders and they haven't trickled that money down for decades.
  6. Wouldn't you prefer that the bulk of tax cuts were for Americans like us and not for corporations? Corporate profits are at all time highs, whereas spending power for the middle class is much lower. I'm game for corporate tax cuts when the loopholes are closed. I'm also game for aggressive tax cuts on small businesses and creating incentives to raise wages and hire workers. What I'm not game for is blanket tax cuts taht go overwhelmingly to corporation bottom lines. They're doing just fine for themselves. People 25-40 who are trying to buy cars, houses, have children, go on vacations, and do the sort of things a healthy economy allows for are getting KILLED by policies over the last thirty years. Why did every baby boomer get to have a single income household with little debt when they entered the workforce, steady wage increases, and a comfortable cost of living and my generation is getting reamed by student loans (Dem's fault), income inequality (Republicans), horrible value for health coverage (Republicans), and no wage increases? (Blame em all) The selfishness and blind allegiance to party is killing the majority of Americans. I'd ask you to ask more of your party than corporate welfare.
  7. Organization has rarely been the strong suit of the Dems. I hope they are as well. I also wish the map better favored the results of a landslide.
  8. What facts are not present in this thread that need to be? I see plenty of links to the past and how this name and logo were picked. If those links are insufficient, what else needs to be here? If those links are sufficient what are you talking about?
  9. You said you don't want to base decisions "solely on feelings". Implying there are non-feeling reasons to consider. I asked you what those might be. You didn't answer. So I'll ask again: What are these other factors we should consider so that we are not "solely deciding based on feelings"? To your other point: I have no problem forcing the morality of "don't be racist" on racists. I won't apologize for that. I'm not sure why anyone should.
  10. You seemed to use the term "non-feelings" derisively as if the side to remove it is devoid of reasons beyond emotions. (Which implies the other side has non-emotional reasons as well) Otherwise I'm not sure what that comment adds to the discussion. Some issues are largely emotional. This one seems to be another one, driven mostly around sentiment vs. morality. A matchup I tend to overwhelmingly favor "morality" in personally.
  11. The Dems just started attacking each other over the Dreamer issue. I hate to say it as someone who supports giving them full citizenship.....but that's a losing issue to draw the line in the sand over. Have some courage.....start making the case now about universal health care. That's an issue that effects every level of every citizen's life. Sad as it is to say, but the Dreamers are an issue that has to be a backburner. Plus....just take Trump's offer. His base hates it (plus), you protect the dreamers (plus), and you can fight the immigration fight another day. (what we've been doing for 50 years) Fight a fight that will win you elections, not lose them.
  12. What non-feelings should we consider for keeping it? I'm genuinely asking. Most of the "Keep it" crowd is based on sentiment from what I can see.
  13. Wasn't "Indians" a blanket description that was used? And then continued to be used even when we knew it to be false because we were too lazy/indifferent to change it?
  14. For the record, I'm not sure how much better we've really gotten either. But we were a bit more brazen about it in the past.
  15. That's a large part, but I do think it's relevant what the name was born out of. And it was born out of an era and a culture that mocked Native Americans openly and cartoonishly. That matters too.
  16. Looks like it's closer to +6 right now. I'm not sure that's enough, in part because I'm not sure that number is going to trend upward. (As of today, but with the current crap storm we have in politics that is given to change by the minute)
  17. I thought they had fallen to something right around +3 right now? Where were you seeing a higher number? I think they'll have great turnout, I just think the seats available to them are just too limited to have the kind of sweeping butt-kicking the Republicans deserve. I hope I'm wrong though.
  18. There's just not much margin of error is the thing. Of the 44 seats that can be challenged, only (I think) 8 of them are Republican seats. Even if you have a killer turn-out, there just isn't much possibility for gain there. You could still swing the Senate, but you're going into it with the odds low. There is more room in the House, but even then it may be hard. I expect good Democratic turnout and a pretty decisive butt-kicking across most of the country. But that still might not mean they take either body of Congress.
  19. The map doesn't favor them just on the basis of which seats are up for grabs, but they have won a few surprise special elections so there may be hope.
  20. He used to be a pretty shiny prospect. I'd at least pick up the phone and check on the price.
  21. To further this point: I'm pretty sure the Timberwolves are on their 6th logo in the last 7 years. Or something damn close to that. I didn't see anyone lying in the street over any of those changes. It ends up being about the principle of the thing, but the principles are all misguided. Our long-standing, demeaning treatment of Native Americans is long overdue for some reversal.
  22. So....how much we missing Rubio?
  23. I disagree. Those references are largely there because of a long-standing cultural belittling of Native Americans. They used a cartoonishly insulting logo because the term "Indian" has long been associated with a litany of cartoonish portrayals. I don't care how "honored" we try to make the groups feel using their names, the basis for their choice as a nickname was pretty much never in good faith. If we want to show some actual good faith there are host of ways we can do that without dressing up mascots and selling merchandise.
  24. It's one thing to name yourself after a sub-culture (Vikings, Spartans, Yankees), and it's quite another to name yourself after a race of people. The name should change in time as well.
