  1. Oakland. It's overdue. (And I'd vote to leave up the ivy in Wrigley and tear everything around it down. It's a dump)
  2. Any time you commit money to a player for a long term you are taking on a ton of risk. I still agree with the thinking at the time and that is ultimately what matters. Outcomes long-term don't always work out the way we'd want them too, but hindsight shouldn't have that much control over our thinking. And we'd all personally look like fools. Between Hughes' extension, people demanding a trade for Troy Tulowitski, and how many of us were keen on giving up Berrios for win-now guys....none of us would be safe.
  3. I don't think they win the series but that was very much necessary if this team plans to take the next step next year.
  4. A charter and religious school behind it? I'm shocked and aghast!
  5. MLB is coming close to a breaking point on that front. Attendance is a problem in a growing number of markets, I'm not sure it's that easy.
  6. That's one of those trades neither side thinks is a good idea.
  7. Yeah....link? I'm curious on the context. (Not that it makes it ok or anything, just hard to fathom)
  8. I thought he had an excellent Game 1 and 2. But yeah...then playoff Dubs again.
  9. I think durability should be more of a concern. He's gotten hurt a lot and he will take a much harsher beating in the NFL. I look at him as a future Alex Smith best case scenario and that's only if he stays healthy. I don't consider that the kind of upside I'd use a top 10 pick on.
  10. Time to shake up the roster. Parise and Suter are untradeable so I think the following players are locks next year: Zucker-Staal-Granlund Parise-Koivu Kunin-Erickson Ek-Greenway Foligno Suter-Spurgeon Dumba Seeler That means Brodin, Coyle, Nino, Ennis should all be trade chips. Am I missing anything?
  11. Curious, what do you guys see in Rosen you like?
  12. Mayfield is the best of that bunch IMO. I wouldn't touch Allen or Rosen with a ten foot pole.
  13. Since he is a given to walk after this year I'd avoid it. If the Twins are going to spend prospect capital I hope they do it on someone with some team control. It's why I preferred Gerrit Cole as my top trade target this offseason. If I were to name names right now, I'd be on the horn about Archer (his performance might lead to a lower price tag) or JT Realmuto.
  14. I wasn't talking about the world outside. We don't have consensus in this thread that no individuals are being attacked. I would very much like jimmer and Chief and Mike to not feel attacked. (Or anyone else for that matter) I have no reason to attack them. They all seem like fine people who often have interesting things to say. I don't, in any form, think of them, or even their comments, as racist. However, for whatever reason, they seem intent on feeling as though they are personally attacked, even though I want nothing to do with breaking down personal comments and only want to talk about the issue more generally. I feel like Brock, Carole, diehard, and yourself would fall into that camp as well. And while I agree with Psuedo and gunnarthor on a broader level, I've taken issue with the tact they are more inclined to. I've stated openly that I'm not sure it's helpful. But by the same measure, at some point you have to drop the "I'm being attacked" if you're not being attacked. If you're going to rush to be offended or insulted by the conversation, then you're making it about you and it's hard for any of the rest of us to penetrate that. Regardless of tact. As Carole's article suggests, I guess some of us can keep saying they can trust the intent, but until they do there isn't much of a consensus unfortunately.
  15. I don't think we can. Every few posts it rears it's head again and that is where we seem to be stuck. Your posts enabling/defending/rationalizing that only added to it. I know that wasn't your intention, but it's what happened. I simply cannot do any more over a message board to assert that I am not indicting any individual. And yet it keeps coming back. I accept my part in that failure, but it also means I can't agree we have consensus there. It'd be nice. I'll hold out hope that we can.
  16. Man, that last section of that article is spot on. I really, really like what it said there about how you diffuse the echo-chamber with trust and good-will. It speaks to problems we've had here: disregard for good-will with someone not like-minded, but also several posters in here "judo"ing any attempt to use evidence and reason to help sway them. Great stuff, thank you for posting it Carole.
  17. I think it's an indictment of pretty much all of us to varying degrees. But the harder left and the harder right you are....the worse you tend to be. And I think it was a wonderful article. Frankly, there are too many echo chambers out there. TD gets that way too, though probably more of an epistemic bubble.
  18. I think by and large this is the difficulty with social change. People get pretty set in their ways and it takes a considerable amount of push - both in terms of intensity and duration - to move things along and change minds. There are real emotions that are necessary to drive things, but counter-productive to driving them to a solution. There is a real need to talk, but that means someone has to listen. A lot of dynamics that oppose each other towards meaningful solutions, but are nonetheless necessary elements for the solutions to even happen. It's frustrating. But that's how I feel I come down on virtually every political discussion these days. Looks like this one will end much the same.
  19. I guess I feel like I did acknowledge that fear and tried to reassure several posters that I wasn't accusing them. My criminal justice analogy was meant to do exactly that. Maybe it wasn't effective, that's fair. But I think that's a two way street also. I can't avoid making someone feel attacked if they want to feel attacked.
  20. Yeah, talk me off this ledge too.
  21. What other way would you suggest we remove that implication? I feel like Brock and I have made explicit that we don't want that implication in the conversation and I've used analogies to demonstrate that. Is there some other way to come at this? I'm genuinely asking, though my confidence there is a way decreases by the page in this thread.
  22. You managed to completely miss the point of that article and the data it was presenting. That is becoming a sad refrain in this thread. I don't think I want to say more than that.
  23. If I recall, Morrison did try to lay down a bunt last night. (And failed miserably)
  24. And here is one link.
