  1. Weight is only part of it. Santana's injury was on an awkward route/run that missed a ball and caused him to turn in a hurry on the run. In other words: an injury caused by someone who has not yet developed instincts or competency at a new position. On that, the injury is a warning on Sano. So is Schwarber who, despite his size, did nothing to prevent his knee from getting destroyed. A few weeks ago I insisted we not give the a Twins cover - good or bad - for their decisions this offseason. That needs to continue to be the case and so far the results haven't been worth all the defense they got.
  2. No, I'm not Sano. But merely being athletic doesn't make one a competent OF. We are playing a team that just won the WS because they appreciated the opposite of two longstanding baseball memes: bullpens and outfield defense. Perhaps we should take notes.
  3. RF defense absolutely matters, especially because bad defense spirals things out of control. Does RF matter as much as SS? No, but it sure as hell matters. I guarantee if you toss me a glove and go out there you're going to eat those words within days. It matters and the this little Sano experiment is going to prove that. Unfortunately, not in a way we as Twins fans will appreciate.
  4. We had a couple of torrid hitters carry us for stretches last year, this offense really worries me. I hope this doesn't become a trend. I feel confident we can get competent starting pitching, but I'm not nearly as confident in our ability to score runs. And if Sano has an adjustment period for any stretch of time that lack of confidence becomes full blown pessimism.
  5. I thought it as it was happening. As Nunez is standing there ready to PR...all I could think is - why not just hit him? I'll always prefer Nunez to Suzuki in a tight situation, PH stats be damned.
  6. I'm glad Mike pointed out the pinch hitting thing. If you're going to pinch run Nunez for Suzuki anyway....why the hell don't you let the better hitter swing in that situation? I can't make sense of that.
  7. I pulled this thread up and all I read about is ABW. Looks like Garrett Jones is going to need to hand over that "Golden Calf" moniker.
  8. Over, but it'll be close. I think they are probably an 80 win team this year as we fully transition.
  9. Over, I think Moustakas or Hosmer takes another step forward as a hitter.
  10. Where's that Nolasco riot thread when ya need it?
  11. Under, this team still can't hit their way out of a paper bag.
  12. Yes, but that complaining might have also led to May's demotion to the pen later in the season. The complaints are valid, why is Duffy in the race for the 5th starter spot if the team doesn't think he has the repetoire to be a starter? Meanwhile they move a guy they admit has the stuff to be a starter to the bullpen. My brain hurts.
  13. They could have uprooted the veterans, especially given the fact that one of them actually has worn an outfield glove in the past. We shouldn't give the Twins a pass and buy that this was their only option. That's my only point, I really strongly disagree with that. And the thing is, for many that want to believe this will work out for the Twins, they should disagree with it too. If Sano works out as a RF no one is going to say "Thank goodness the Twins had no choice but to do this!" - they'll argue the Twins made the right decision, not backed into a good thing. Buying the "we had no choice" angle let's the Twins off the hook if this doesn't work out.
  14. So Sano was the only possible RF? I don't buy that and neither should you.
  15. Absolutely, at the end of the day all the mistakes I worry they made could turn out to have been brilliant maneuvers by the team. I just take major issue with tossing the team shade already for their roster management.
  16. We don't know how their choices will work out. But it was their choice to do all of the things you listed. They weren't backed into any corners or without alternatives. They willfully walked into their decisions. They deemed this the best way to go - fail or succeed it was their call. We should judge the results as such, not start giving them preseason cover that this was somehow the only way things could be.
  17. Kepler is about 40% of my insistence on trading Plouffe. We NEED a batter like Kepler, he might step in immediately as the best leadoff hitter on the roster until Buxton improves his pitch recognition.
  18. They could have moved Plouffe. They could have kept Sano at DH. They could have moved Mauer to DH and played Sano at 1B. Quit trying to give the team excuses. They had a multitude of options. These are the choices they made. They chose not to sign any relievers. They chose not to trade for any relievers. They chose to give Duffy and Nolasco preference to May in the rotation. They chose to move the 22 year old and not the 29 year old to the OF. They chose to sign Park. We may judge, at the end of this, that their choices were correct. But they weren't backed into a freaking corner, that's so preposterous.
  19. Yeah the forced hand presentation of these choices is so terrible. It is about May in the bullpen. It is about Sano in RF. The team willfully made those choices and should be judged by their success or failure as such.
  20. Again, Milone didn't have to move. We could be rolling out Santana, Milone, Gibson, May, and Hughes if we wanted to. We didn't want to. That's really all it boils down to.
  21. Chances are that he'd be just fine. Predicting who will or will not be an effective bullpen arm is not much of a science, it's more guesswork. In either case, we didn't have to remove Milone from the roster to put May in the rotation.
  22. You only have to "dump Milone" if you count what they did with May as "dumping May"
