  1. That's fine. But we're judging the actions of the team and the FO...they don't (and shouldn't) make decisions based on fun or deliberate delusion about the chances of the team this year. If you're mad this team isn't more fun this year, don't blame the trade deadline - blame the crappy performance of the team that got them to a 48-53 record and sell-mode. The deadline is about facing reality, choosing now to stamp your feet in anger at this season's failures is really misguided and childish.
  2. I like Escobar and I hope he comes back next year. But I love the approach here by the Twins, rather than take a AAAA guy or someone like that, they went with guys that have high upside tools that could be nice additions if they can develop them. They weren't scared off by age or level of development, they went for upside. I will always dig that.
  3. This is roughly the same logic as foregoing your mortgage payment to buy lottery tickets....because that's more fun.
  4. Well, from those old leaks from Houston, I think you have to do more than field calls. Teams also need to call to start talks as a seller. I think making a deadline deal needs to work from both directions and not just about waiting for it to land in your lap.
  5. The DH will be universal. The game will be better for it.
  6. Those are all fair points and why I am not advocating "sell Gibson at all costs for the best return" - there are guys on this team I would say that about, but not him. I would shop Gibson hard, but I'm content to keep him. What I'm not content with is the mentality that we have to keep him. The flexibility you talk about, coupled with young starters we have that should be in the rotation next year, are why I'm willing to explore this aggressively.
  7. Gibson has never maintained effectiveness for more than 1 year to this point. Maybe he's a different guy, but my post was about how large the risk is in investing in him. If you get low-balled....keep him. That's absolutely an option. This team has pitching in AAA that should be in the rotation next year and payroll flexibility. If someone wants to boost their rotation and pays the price, I'd be listening.
  8. I'm just going to say that this is a poor argument. I hope an explanation isn't necessary.
  9. If Gibson was a normally aged pitcher at the end of his team control I'd probably agree with you. But an extension to a 32 year old is a major gamble right from the outset, regardless of who they are. So, sure, there is value in keeping him, but I wouldn't let that stop me from aggressively shopping him.
  10. Depends on the return. You don't have to deal him, but you should shop him. Getting blinded by immediate returns/value over long-term value is just as good a way to make mistakes as the reverse.
  11. No one wants to trade Gibson because they are a "hater", that's preposterous. Seriously. He's 31 at the end of the year, 32 by the end of his team control. He's not a long-term asset, so it's worthwhile to see what long-term assets he might yield in a trade.
  12. Doubts are totally legit. Most trade returns aren't going to be amazing and they make take awhile to manifest. We might get nothing for selling in the end. Key word is might. If we do nothing and hold on to these players we are guaranteed to get nothing.
  13. How about another Escobar? If we even land one player like that it'd be nice. There will be plenty to root for the last few months, including the return of Buxton and Sano. Hopefully we'll see some Gordon, Wade, Romero, Gonsalves, or others. There will always be reasons to be a fan, but this season is lost. Sell and get as many lottery tickets as you can for guys like Lynn, Reed, Rodney, Duke, etc. Sell for the best offer on Esco and Dozier. Explore if someone will knock your socks off for Gibson. We don't have to get a mind-blowing return for it to benefit our fandom going forward. I doubt anyone here was jumping up and down about getting Escobar, but we whooped the White Sox in that trade and it has helped lead to more wins for our team. Let's hope we can land a few more guys to help for yearsto come.
  14. Well said. I was really excited for a playoff season. This sucks. But it would suck more if we kept digging the hole deeper.
  15. 0.7% chance. Some lottery tickets have better odds. There is fandom hope and then there is being silly. I would hope these two games pushed a few people out of silly territory.
  16. What you want is like buying a new house because you happened to find an envelope with ten thousand dollars in the gutter. Twice. Not exactly a sound basis for planning going forward. Root for them to win all you want, but you're hurting the team long term to clutch on to expiring players out of some delusion the team is in contention. Go get some controllable assets that can help you win for a long time.
  17. For those of us who saw that win streak for what it was (home cooking against historically bad teams) - this is a welcome sobering reality. This team is a seller and needs to be.
  18. This QO talk really doesn't make sense guys. Especially for Escobar. If you want to give him 18 million, you better do it over 2 or 3 years.
  19. The irony is that Escobar himself is precisely the kind of player you're opposed to us acquiring.
  20. It'd be nice if he spread out his binges a bit more so that it wasn't late July and we're still a far cry from .500. Make no mistake, he holds a great deal of blame in that. Counting on second half binges is dicey territory. Even dicier for a middle infielder into his 30s now. Maybe he goes Ruth the last few months, but it's too little too late for this team. And he's a bad investment going forward. I hope the Twins find good value in moving on.
  21. Perhaps it's time to stop expecting Buxton to be healthy.
  22. Those are not mutually exclusive. The prior achievements took place before health issues took over. We're in 2018, if you have a time machine to bring us 2009 Joe Mauer to the present day, then all of that would be helpful and relevant. (And pretty awesome, though I'd probably use the time machine for better purposes. Probably)
  23. Dozier's inconsistency is an issue though. For the first half of the season we were sticking a sub-700 OPS player in key places in the lineup hoping for the corner to turn. Now, you could argue the manager should've been hitting him 8th until his binge, but we also know Brian Dozier gets easily poutyif he doesn't hit where he wants to hit. And there is always a high chance that "corner to turn" is never going to come. I'd still rather have Dozier because of the upside, but his consistency issues have always really bugged me. I don't have a problem with a guy having slumps and streaks, that's natural. But this half-season feast or famine stuff just isn't the kind of play I'd like to invest in long-term.
