  1. congrats. glad I can help I guess...
  2. The reason it was implemented was to get calls right. This individual play shows that there is still some tweaking that needs to be done. It should be a reviewable play and the umps shouldn't be looking at the big screen.
  3. People complaining that the right call was made should be embarrassed. This was a play that completely changed the game and the entire reason that replay was implemented. They still need to work out a few issues like which plays can be reviewed.
  4. Pitchers can completely change when moved to the bullpen. Pelfrey has a few things that could make him a great reliever. It's at least a plan where the Twins could get a little value out of him. He has a chance to be a mediocre starter but that's the best case as a starter.
  5. It turns out that there was no real substance to the rumors. The TWolves would need to do a sign and trade and they have nothing substantial to trade. Lavine, Rubio or future picks is about it. Other than that it's Wiggins (not going anywhere) or a pile of salary dumps. I think it was nothing more than a negotiating ploy with Rubio to get him to lower his demands for an extension. It also puts them on the map with Bledsoe next offseason. the suns are certainly in a pickle with Bledsoe. I think bridges have been burned.
  6. I think it's one part silly but that is part of the MiLB identity. After all the Twins have an affiliate with a corncob as a mascot. 1 part 'wtf' and many parts awesome. MiLB ranked the coolest hats and Chattanooga was the highest ranked Twins affiliate. 26 - Lookouts 34 - Beloit - I do not like that color at all. 35 - Roch - that looks pretty cool and is much better than the hat I saw for sale a few years ago 37 - Kernals - I chose to buy a shirt instead of a hat when I visited this summer. I didn't like the color scheme. The mascot is pretty cool. 67 - Ft Myers - it is pretty bland imo 82 - NB - it at least made the top 101
  7. Even with Bledsoe (if they get him) the TWolves can't make the playoffs but as a fan I applaud them for not outright tanking even if it means that they get stuck in the back half of the lottery. It will be interesting to see what they would have to give up.
  8. I don't think this is the first time that the championship has resulted in a low scoring battle. Billy Buck got 2 shutouts this week and still hasn't done much. I will see your Shoemaker and raise you a Greene (not actually a raise). Where the hell do these guys come from?
  9. I'm hoping for Chattanooga. Tulsa (not Topeka) would be a fine but summers of baseball in the Texas area doesn't sound great. Dry and dusty and nothing. It also seems like it favors hitting although I don't think the park effects say that (at least not ridiculously so). New Britain finds itself in a tough position in the short term. There's only one western MLB team in the Eastern league and I doubt anyone wants to go there.
  10. That history is silly to look at. the one thing that it tells me is that the Twins shouldn't get caught up in a bidding war for average pitchers (Hampton and Zito) for elite dollars. Or really that they shouldn't spend more than 50M for any average players older than 30.
  11. That would rank 4th among 2Bman. .725 still ranks in the top 10. Did you really think he was a top 5 2Bman? I thought he was good but I never thought he was that good.
  12. So you're concerned contracts longer than 4 years affecting future Twins payrolls? Nolasco is a FA in 3 yrs and Mauer's contract is up in 4 years. There will still be money to spend. I guess I'm just not buying into this notion that the popularly mentioned pitchers are going to turn into Corriea at the end of their contracts. they won't be near elite but a lot of the big signings have been fairly good late into their contracts. I would have a bigger concern that the guys available on 4 yr 50-60M contracts are complete dead weight because they weren't nearly as good in the first place. You are talking about signing #3's and not really good FA's. Yes, you can get those guys in FA but it's not the same as adding an ace to a rotation. If the Twins put a Garza type in the rotation then it's at best an okay rotation unless Meyer turns into an ace (could happen). If the Twins put Scherzer/Lester in the rotation then it becomes a playoff caliber (competitive in the playoffs) rotation. That's my goal. Yes, a team doesn't have to ever sign a top FA but relying on the farm to produce an ace in addition to several other top players could lead to a lot of waiting. Right now the Twins have a potential 7-8 yr window to do something with Buxton/Sano if they become 80% of what they can. You can't assume that they will be here longer than that and I would hate to see their prime wasted by not having talent around them. If the Twins aren't spending on Lester/Scherzer this year then I hope they are in on Price next year. Of course there is a chance he doesn't even hit FA.
  13. There hasn't been much of a disagreement that his BAPIP was fluky. I think you are dismissive of just how valuable Dozier can be as a .725 OPS player.
  14. How were the lucky HR's more or less real than the lucky hits? 8/20 of Dozier's HR's were 'just enoughs' as defined by hittrackeronline.
  15. So you discount August because of freaky good BAPIP but you weren't discounting the 1st half because of an unexplained # of HR's? I still don't understand what you thought he was going to be. Did you think he was a near elite 2Bman? I didn't believe the HR's were real and I considered him more of an average player the whole time.
  16. This is only a problem if the Twins have too many good pitchers in the rotation. Pelfrey will get a chance to compete for a rotation spot but there is no way that he is guaranteed a spot regardless of his contract. They certainly don't need to trade him to bring in a FA starter that would be the best pitcher in the entire rotation.
  17. Okay, I was wrong. There are unreasonable expectations for Dozier. He was playing like a top 5 2Bman. He wasn't though and now he's playing like a better than average 2Bman. That's what he is.
  18. You should only be concerned if you thought he was a 20+ HR hitter and he needed to hit 20+ HR's to be successful. In August he still had a .140 isoP so the power was still there. He's still a low .700's OPS guy with decent defense. Even during his HR binge this was my expectation.
  19. It does help. There are starters and there are bench players in AAA. Bench players need to play more than one position to make an MLB team. And just because a guy like Hermann has bench upside doesn't mean he needs to be dumped. There are only X number of legitimately good AAA prospects in Rochester (or any AAA team). The rest are made up of AAAA types (bench upside) or career MiLB'ers.
  20. This means that it's still about the money. Sure there are some pitchers that fall apart at the end but many have decent seasons all the way to the end. And taking this strategy pretty much means that you can never sign a really good FA ever because this is the risk with nearly all of them.
  21. I would much rather do both. FWIW - Mauer's contract has not had a negative financial impact for the Twins regardless of him being overpaid. Even with that contract they are still well below their spending limit. They could even add another mega contract and be below their limit. With the number of pre-arb players in starting roles and the staggered end of the only significant contracts on the Twins there should be money to spend for a number of years. The choice is spend the money or don't spend it. And the choice is to spread that money over several okay players (from Correia to Hughes to Nolasco level) or to invest in a near premium player like Scherzer/Lester. Undoubtedly the Twins will not but it's certainly possible.
  22. It doesn't change much because he's already a longshot because of how young and as far away he is. After (a possible) TJ surgery he's still a longshot.
  23. You say it isn't about the money but then the only reason that you list to not sign a big FA is money. Strange.
  24. I don't think it should be viewed as an either/or solution. Hitters still put 70-75% of their PA's in play off of elite pitchers in play. That's a lot of fielding opportunities even if you have an elite staff. the one year defensive data shows average or better defensive stats throughout the infield. it also shows dreadfully awful stats for every OF'er but Shafer and Fuld (not many innings for either). It's not a big enough sample size to truly determine an individual's defensive ability but collectively it tells a definitive story. Plays simply were not made (what defensive data measures) by the OF'ers. Given the roster makeup and prospect pipeline this is relatively correctable next season and the season after. Hicks should be better with more experience. Buxton will be up at some point providing better defense. I don't hold out much hope for Arcia defensively but maybe he won't be as awful. I like Nori Aoki as a stopgap OF'er/4th Of'er.
  25. there's no doubt that it's bad to need TJ surgery but he is still a prospect in A ball. That in itself makes him a long shot. Needing TJ surgery (if) doesn't change much overall. And shoulders are the really scary thing. There is an endless list of post TJ pitchers that have had great careers. Shoulders are something that seem to never go away and lead to more problems later.
