  1. Fans support winners and you propose taking a team that is a few games out of the WC and turning it into a loser? No, that isn't a smart move unless you have several players that are leaving in FA and you can cash in by trading those players. Trading Santiago for a mediocre prospect isn't cashing in.
  2. With the new WC rules that is only a few games out of the playoffs. I might not be all in but waving the white flag if you are that close sends a very bad message to the players and to the fans after so many years of losing. I am not trading SP at that point. I would trade from depth (like Dozier or Escobar) though.
  3. There is nothing about this team that says go for it. They might be able to stay around .500 until the trade deadline but they would need luck to advance against any playoff team (ALDS). The playoffs might be a crapshoot for strong teams but weak teams (not necessarily measured by record) get weeded out. Trading top 5 org prospects for a very good rental - NO Trading top 5 org prospects for a very good 1.5 year (or longer) player - possibly if it is a good value Trading top 15-30 prospects for a gap filler (like the Santiago or Jepsen trades) - Sure Trading away Santiago or Santana while at .500 - #@%$# NO! Trading away Dozier (for near ready or MLB pitching) with Escobar and Polanco playing really well - I am listening
  4. No, now we are arguing that Tepesch is a better pitcher than Berrios right now.
  5. This isn't about development. It is about taking the chance of bringing up an actual good SP this season instead of guaranteed mediocrity (the REAL mediocre) of Tepesch. I can actually see the Twins logic in this though. They need to find another starter (after Berrios is called up) and want to see if Tepesch can survive. Yay! Fun!
  6. You do realize that the SSS MLB records for prospects is utterly meaningless, correct? Or do you think Tepesch is actually a better pitcher than Berrios (and Mejia)? Tepesch is a warm body and nothing else.
  7. Certainly not. I expect both to be competing for 15 min/game bench roles next year. My point was that Canis Hoopus knocks Markkanen out of consideration because he is a long term project but drools of Isaac. the question regarding isaac is whether or not he would be a wing or a small 4 for the first couple of seasons. I just can't see him playing against 4's right now.
  8. Why what? Tepesch is a 28 yr old non-prospect that is nothing more than a warm body. And I don't need Saturday to confirm. Send up a real starting pitcher.
  9. Why? Tepesch shouldn't be the 4th starter. He should be that warm body RP'er.
  10. Are you considering Tepesch a starter? I am not. Regardless of Saturday. He is your RP'er (instead of calling another up) and Berrios should be the starter (including the Saturday game).
  11. At the time the Eagles were eager to dump him. The Vikings really needed a QB and the Eagles knew it but the Vikings bid against themselves.
  12. Are you kidding? You would take a pitcher 1-1 and move him after 1-2 years of struggles?
  13. I still consider the Bradford trade to be an overpay. The Eagles didn't want him at all but the Vikings need drove them to accept the offer. The Vikings lucked into getting a 1st rd talent in the 2nd rd so the damage was minimized. I liked the first two picks but was a little concerned about not having enough 3rd-5th picks to fill holes. The first two trade downs were great but the final trade downs amassing 7th's were pointless and kind of negated the extra value they picked up with the initial trading down. Those holes won't be filled with 7th rounders. B+ draft - A lot of early talent that can contribute and then several ???? picks/trades to end the draft. Looks like an 8-8 team at best unless they overperform and get some lucky breaks. And they are a Bradford injury away from being a 4 or 5 win team. Meh
  14. But you can see the extremes (signing the top FA pitcher, a healthy 34+ yr old, a prospect that does great and Hughes simply being effective) that were needed in order to have a situation where there was too much pitching. I would be surprised if more than half of those happened. Plenty of room for prospects to come up. Arguments that don't make sense regarding Santiago - prospects will be blocked (I yearn for the day that a prospect is blocked by a good pitcher) - spend the money on somebody else (plenty of money to go around with an offensive core in pre-arb) - the Twins can sign someone else decent later (if they could then they wouldn't continually have awful rotations)
  15. Ingram is exactly what I was thinking. But I would gladly take a 15+ min/game Brandon Ingram project with this core.
  16. Yes, but I am not making an argument for Greene necessarily. It is just that I don't really like the 'fall back' option of McKay. If McKay is the better pick as a pitcher then I am okay with that. Give up a little ceiling for more certainty and sooner to the majors is valid. It is also something we have heard about college pitchers before and the closer to the majors part was frequently false and many didn't even make the majors.
  17. I wasn't talking about now. I was talking about 2018. What you do with Duffey doesn't matter in that equation. I still am not going to feel excited about the rotation if Duffey moves to the rotation and does alright in 15 GS. You keep saying that the Twins can add a decent starter at a later time like it is a trivial item. If it were easy then the Twins wouldn't be in this situation. I am not sure where you think I am saying that Santiago is the answer to our problems and I am okay with waiting or not extending him but I can certainly see a reason that an extension (on July 1st) would be a good move. Even if the absolute best circumstances happened there isn't a scenario where the Twins have TOO MUCH good pitching next year. #1 Cueto or big FA - this is the best possible path (not the likely) #2 Ervin #3 Berrios looks awesome this year #4 Santiago #5 Hughes - somehow survives and is decent Even in this scenario you still only have Mejia and Duffey (if you move him) and possibly some current A+/AA pitchers coming up. And I think just about everyone doesn't think everything is going to break the Twins way like the example above shows.
  18. It is interesting that Canis Hoopus regards Markkanen as a long term project that doesn't fit due to that but Isaac isn't. The more I read about Isaac the more I like him long term but I see him as a pretty substantial project with a minimal immediate impact.
  19. Santiago vs Duffey don't concern each other. Both can happen or neither. Duffey is old enough that the Twins need to make a decision that ensures they get something out of him. Yo-yoing him back and forth doesn't allow that and if he doesn't have the pitches to be a starter then make sure that he becomes a good RP'er.
  20. I am not terribly excited about locking him into an extension (2/20ish) right now so that furthers my point. But I will give you some reasons why he is valuable enough to lock into a contract right now though THE TWINS ROTATION AND PROSPECTS ARE TERRIBLE (Some prospects are decent but far from certain) Without Santiago A - #3 starter Phil Hughes B - #4 starter Aderlin Mejia C - #5 starter Kyle Gibson I have reserved the top 2 spots for Ervin and Berrios but even that is not a slam dunk since Ervin is 34 and Berrios hasn't figured out anything yet. Maybe the price tag doesn't increase much but he is locked in and the Twins can make a plan going forward. Instead of HOLY @#$%#$^#$ we need an entire rotation!
  21. This sounds easy but it really isn't. You are looking at a minimum of 2-3 seasons in the minors as pitcher if this don't work out. And then he switches to hitting at 25+ and then needs to spend 2+ seasons in the minors developing as a hitter. This really isn't an interesting fall back imo for a 1-1. Go all in on the best player. Note - I use the 2-3 seasons minimum in the example of McKay not working out. In reality if they only give him 2 seasons to figure things out as a pitcher then the Twins failed in the draft by picking someone that isn't very good. Or he needed TJ and missed a season (as a hitter or pitcher) due to injury.
  22. Let's be realistic as to the type of prospect that we would get back though. Last year the Angels had to take back Nolasco (a thoroughly crappy pitcher and not mediocre) and give up a poor prospect in order to get Alex Meyer. What the Twins get back really isn't significant to making the team better in 2018-2022.
  23. This is true but it is different than winning. He is certainly on pace to get some votes.
