  1. I would prefer to start the season with an actual good hitter there especially since part of that platoon will likely start the season at 3B. Corey Hart would be a good match although I'm not sure if he will be a better defender than willy after last year's knee surgeries. But that's why he will be in the Twins price range.
  2. My Christmas list consists of a veteran catcher and an OF'er. Yes, an OF'er. The Twins had an awful offense last year and it would be nice to add another veteran bat to go with Willy and Mauer to take the pressure off the young guys. I refuse to be concerned about Parmelee (or Doumit) losing playing time.
  3. I'm not concerned at all about this. As a matter of fact I think this whole lefty/righty rotation is overrated. Looking at the AL Central best lefthanded hitters (the bulk of the games) White Sox - De Aza and Dunn Tigers - Avila (VMart is a switch hitter) Indians - Kipnis, Chisenhall, Bourn and Brantley (Asdrubal, Swisher and Santana are SH) Royals - Hosmer, Gordon and Mous So the Twins righthanded staff will have a decided advantage against 2 teams, a wash against one and matchup problems against the Injuns. That's not enough of a reason to put an inferior pitcher in the rotation for all of the rest of the games. Although Diamond might make the team. Currently it's a 3 man race for the #4 and #5 spots (with Worley and Deduno).
  4. I know it's juvenile and against TD policy but I have a strong urge to bump every thread from the past year that said the Twins would never spend in FA. There's risk to both Nolasco and Hughes but there's also upside. Without the risk the Twins likely would have been priced out of both of them.
  5. It's not really about Kazmir vs Hughes. Kazmir is a nice target also since he's expected to sign in the same price range. The biggest knock on Kazmir (and it's a big one) is that he was awful or completely out of the MLB (and MiLB) for 4 years before last season. But that's why he's available for relatively little. I think I explained Hughes pretty well not long ago. He has raw talent and looks very similar to Homer bailey before he figured things out 2 years ago.
  6. Not signing a better pitcher because we might have to DFA one of those guys is a BIGGER mistake. And some are claiming (probably true) that Worley, Diamond and Deduno are out of options so AAA can't happen for them.
  7. I can't understand your post. He has more upside but it would be a mistake to DFA one the average at best guys? And service time isn't an issue with any of the 4 pitchers mentioned.
  8. He is a fringy candidate and a complete jerk. As much as people want to make the ballot strictly about WAR there is a lot more to the HOF than just a simple one size fits all stat. My ballot although I could swap a half dozen candidates in at the bottom. Maddux - 2 no doubters Thomas Clemens - a no doubt top 5 pitcher in his era Bonds - same argument as Clemens Glavine Bagwell Biggio Piazza Raines Trammell - a completely forgotten about player that gets overshadowed on such an impressive list. I feel to generous voting for 10 but there are 2 no doubters along with 2 steroid users that were great players regardless. Additionally guys like Bagwell, biggio and Piazza should have already been voted in but are clogging the ballot. this first ballot election is special is a weak argument. If you want to have a special elite then have a 90% and higher club.
  9. I am expecting big things out of Stewart and Thorpe. The Twins aren't there yet but I think next offseason prospect sites might be talking about how strong the Twins MiLB pitching is with Stewart, Thorpe, Berrios, Gonsalves and a few others. And maybe an elite arm at #5 in the draft. Meyer hopefully graduates. Gonsalves is at the top of my watch list. Kind of similar to Thorpe before last season. A lot of potential. Goodrum - He has the physical tools but I think this is the year that Polanco leaves him in the rear view mirror on the MI prospect depth chart. Kepler - could be due for a big breakout if he can have a healthy season. I have always been a big fan. Wimmers - who knows. had talent and could come back after a disastrous pro start
  10. Hughes really hasn't been very good during the last couple of years but I would definitely sign him for 2/15 with a 12M option. The 12M option might look a little expensive but it's actually the key to the deal. Hughes has intriguing upside and a change of scenery could turn him into a sneaky good pitcher. In some ways he reminds me of everyone's favorite - Homer Bailey. Both of these guys were up at 21 and have struggled. Bailey figured things out in the last two years but Hughes hasn't yet. With a little luck the Twins could land a 3.75 ERA pitcher on the cheap locked up for 3 yrs. Or he might continue to suck and the Twins are out an entire 15M. And they maintain a lot of flexibility to bid big on Bailey or someone else next season. Nolasco Correia Hughes Deduno/Diamond/Worley/reclamation project Deduno/Diamond/Worley/reclamation project AAA - Gibson and Meyer - something should open up by June for one of these two. Or before.
  11. I'm not understanding the optimism with Turner. He was a 3rd rd (projected lower) college catcher with a defensive rep. If I was picking a catching breakout then it would be Navaretto. He had makeup issues so he dropped but he has quite a bit of raw skill.
  12. It's an unfortunate choice that teams have to make in FA. Usually the last 1-2 yrs of a 4-5 yr contract are poor values. when you double the length then you double (or more) the decline part but good teams need to make a choice to go for it and sign top FA's. This is of course why the Twins shouldn't sign him.
  13. There is no way that Dozier is a poor man's Cano.
  14. There's no reason that a playoff contender couldn't have a payroll well over 100M. But I highly doubt the Twins are signing a more expensive FA this winter.
  15. It's the kind of move that you make if you are a 85-90+ win team and want to get serious about the playoffs. There's a chance that a 25+M/yr Cano completely wrecks your team's finances in the second half of the contract. For example the Rangers could sign him and trade Profar for Price and enter the season as World Series favorites (or close to it). Even with Cano the Twins will struggle for a couple of years.
  16. The hope is that Nolasco's results catch up to his stuff. If Cotillo is correct and this smaller than EJax's 4/52 then I'm okay with this even if I have been not in favor of signing Nolasco. I know that everyone would like Tanaka or Garza but the first will likely sign for well over 2x of this and the second could get close to 2x. Now if the Twins can get some 2011 Javy Vazquez (a good comparable) season out of him. He does have the ability to put together a really nice season especially if/when the Twins OF defense improves. The most encouraging thing is that this shows that the Twins aren't just talk this offseason. I would have lost my mind this year if they only shopped in the Capuano/Pelfrey market. Hopefully they aren't done though.
  17. WAR is really silly to use as a conclusive stat for something like this. I will break the ballot into 3 tiers for voting purposes no doubters Maddux and THE BIG HURT steroids users - a lot of these should be no doubters but won't get voted in and will stay on the ballot every year. This kind of screws up the ballot for those that would vote for steroid users. They end up with 10 guys on their ballot. borderline candidates - some of these guys I really like (Bagwell and Glavine) and are borderline no doubters while there are A LOT OF guys that a very good argument could be made for. I have always like Trammell for the HOF.
  18. Consider me unimpressed. the only thing that indicates Escobar is anything more than a utility player is a 43 game AAA sample size that includes a .373 BAPIP.
  19. Regardless of how it happened it really doesn't concern me. He was taking a painkiller according to most accounts so we aren't talking about a PED or a recreational drug. Hopefully he can avoid a 50 game suspension but it doesn't concern me long term.
  20. First - edit that to Eric Young Second - Eric Young is not a capable starter at any position regardless of what the rumor says. I have no problem with Daniel Murphy but this move doesn't make much sense for the Twins (unless you just want to dump Willy and include a prospect to do it). Murphy's only real value is if he is playing 2B or 3B and the Twins already have Dozier/rosario at 2B with Sano coming up midseason (hopefully) at 3B.
  21. You said plummet and there is absolutely no data that supports your argument. I'm not even sure that Target Field is tougher lefthanded hitters than Fenway. And I have multiple times said that I would be thrilled with a solid defensive catcher with a .740 for 10M/yr. I have ABSOLUTELY no problems if Salty reverts back to down seasons in Boston. The biggest problem is that you support none of your arguments with actual data. Baseball-reference shows Morneau's career OPS split at Target Field as .787. Ironically when I look up his overall 2010-2013 OPS (since target field opened) at fangraphs it is exactly .787. I understand that this whole Target Field hurts power hitting lefties but there is very little evidence of that. And the Twins haven't had a true power hitting lefty for a significant amount of time since Target Field opened. Mauer hits to the opposite field. Morneau has sucked since 2011 regardless of where he has played. Doumit is a part time switch hitter and Arcia was a rookie.
  22. I'm still not sure if you have looked at any charts. Fenway is not friendly to right field. And I'm still favoring hittracker's analysis that 2/3's (or more) would be home runs in 20+ parks in baseball. Overall I think the whole Target Field affect is overblown. It's not a great HR park but the Twins haven't had good LH'd power hitters for awhile. Mauer hits to the opposite field and Morneau hasn't hit well anywhere. Strangely 2 of Salty's shorter HR's (2011 and 2012) were hit to RF at Target Field. If you had any actual facts to back up your argument that Salty would suffer at Target Field then this would be more interesting but all I see are opinions that are weakly supported by actual facts.
  23. He has actually played at the MLB level. It's not a real good match for the Twins though. He's much better from the right handed side and Pinto is also a righty. But this would put Pinto in the position where he was the primary starter with an experienced backup.
  24. Doumit doesn't hit well enough to not be a catcher and he doesn't catch well enough to be a catcher. Pretty much every team knows this. The Twins should absolutely not stick with what they have. If Pinto disappoints as a rookie or gets injured then we are looking at a season of Herrmann/Doumit/Fryer behind he plate. I think CF last year showed us how important a little depth is behind an unproven rookie. Navarro isn't a very good match but it's much better than having Herrmann or Doumit catching a lot of games.
  25. Getting a called strike early in the count dramatically changes the outcome of an AB. But I think both extreme defensive and catching runs saved (or given up by Doumit) are exaggerations of an imperfect data analysis. It's a nice attempt but I only like to use the results to rank players in defensive tiers instead of trying to combine offensive and defensive stats into one.
