  1. FWIW - Pujols has had some sort of partial tear for most of his career. He's a 1Bman but rest and rehab has worked.
  2. I have expected them to go with a 60/40 split in playing time at catcher so I think both of them make the squad and eventually Pinto works up to starting 75% of the time. Suzuki imo was signed to break Pinto in slowly and provide a reasonable alternative if he flops his 1st time around. And catching 2-3 times/week is not a big issue in the development of an almost 25 yr old. But it does take the big pressure off of him.
  3. the question is whether or not Turner has a powerless bat like Andrus or if he truly has gap power. The problem is that this thread is just lumping him in with Andrus because he doesn't have 25+ HR power. This also remains my biggest question about him but the reports are suggesting that he is not an Andrus type hitter and more of a Reyes or Ellsbury type. An Andrus type is not worth the #5 pick but a Reyes/Ellsbury type is definitely in the conversation.
  4. The # of HR's that a player hits is a small part of of his offensive value. Florimon is a terrible hitter and Hardy is average. A player could easily be above average while only hitting 10 HR's.
  5. There is nothing wrong with the Pelfrey's or the Corriea's. The point was that he doesn't have upside and he's just another of the not going to get the team killed #4/5 starter type. Every team has them but he should never be part of a playoff caliber rotation.
  6. So basically you are asking for Tulo at SS at #5? With 10 HR's, the 2B's and the rest of his offensive skillset we are talking a Jose Reyes type. If his defense is even tolerable at SS then that is an awesome player and something this team really needs.
  7. Pelfrey has no upside beyond a quality #4. He's thrown 1000 innings and never posted a K/9 >6 nor is he good at not walking guys. And if he's your #4 on a playoff team then there is a big temptation to skip him in the playoffs and run your starters out there on short rest.
  8. Posting irrelevant comps about a couple of players that got hurt decades ago as a reason to avoid long term contracts is silly. Players get injured in baseball. It's reality regardless if you are dealing with a Buxton type (pre arb or even pre service time) or locking up a star to a 200M contract.
  9. The team will forever be hamstrung by the 4M buyouts. They won't be able to afford the Kevin Corriea's and Mike Pelfrey's of the league. Whatever will they do?
  10. Does he have to have a Tulo bat to satisfy you? It seems that some are writing him off as a light hitting MI when it's more likely that he's neither a light hitting MI nor is he Tulo. With his speed he could have a Reyes bat at leadoff and that would be an awesome get. My remaining questions are still does he have the real gap power (.150ish isoP) and does he have the plate discipline/contact ability to have a .285 BA with a .340 OBP. If those are yes then I could get on board with Turner but I remain skeptical.
  11. As I understand it the dissent is that the Twins didn't sign the top Baseball America int'l free agents THIS year. I'm not at all concerned if the Twins don't satisfy these types of dissenters. And the Twins shouldn't be concerned at all about these types of dissenters.
  12. the only way we are contending in 2015 with a Nolasco, Meyer, Hughes and Gibson staff is if some magic happens. 3 of those pitchers have potential but the Twins would basically need all 3 of them to hit their potential very quickly. Those odds are not that good but they get better if you have Santana and only need 2 of those pitchers to turn out.
  13. Hughes has 4.5 career ERA and two of those are prospects. Maybe they turn out but you are very optimistic that they will hit their upside by 2015. Santana wouldn't be an ace but he would be the best pitcher on the Twins (Nolasco could be near him) for the foreseeable future. The loss is a draft pick that probably has a 10-20% of being an average player in 2018. I can handle the loss of that draft pick if it means adding a pitcher better than anyone that we currently have.
  14. So the Twins should care if there is less dissent because they got who the public wanted? the Twins top prospect list is full of guys that were signed for less 1M. Sometimes there is a top guy but most of these guys are so speculative that it's typically better to get quantity rather than a couple of top tier guys. I think the twins have done quite well adding a lot of young talent to the system instead of betting on a couple top tier guys.
  15. I remain interested in but skeptical of Turner. If his bat is actually comparable to Andrus then I'm not a big fan but he doesn't need to hit like Tulo or ARod to be an offensive asset. Let's say he can hit .285 and walk enough for a .340 OBP. If he has enough pop for 8-10 HR's and 30-40 2B's then he's awesome. If he's a 3HR and 20-25 2B guy then he becomes less interesting compared to a potential #1.
  16. I have no problems going after Santana even with the draft pick concern. A 75 win team becomes an 85 win team much easier than a <70 win team. Santana would be a pretty big upgrade since he would replace the worst starter on the team and he gives the team another legit #3 going forward. It's easy to say that he's only a couple of wins better than the rest of the team but playoff teams weren't made out of a pile of #4/5 starters.
  17. the problem is that Plouffe will hit 20+ HR's the ugly way. He will be streaky, play poor defense and likely will hit .240 with a .300 OBP. The hope is that you could get a top 200 prospect for that but probably nothing special. I will go with Plouffe also thinking that Willy will spend time on the DL and Arcia slumps enough to play a month or two in Rochester.
  18. If Diaz is an above average hitter then he's not a utility player. If he were a prospect then I would rate him a little behind Rosario. Less bat but there is a chance that he can play SS. How much would people pay Rosario if he was an int'l FA? I like Rosario but even at this point he could still bust and not make it as a starter in the majors. Do people really want to lock up for 5-7M/yr for 4-6 years that might not make it as a starter? Like I said before it's not my money but 30-40M guaranteed seems excessive for a prospect of his caliber (that hasn't played in well over a year - almost 2 years). If we are talking 10 to maybe 15M then it gets interesting since he is a legit prospect but not a sure thing at all.
  19. To make this very clear you don't draft Jackson because he's a catcher. You draft Jackson for the bat and you move him if catching is showed to be a detriment in the development process. One of the big reasons that HS catchers fail is that they are drafted for a combination of their bat and potential ability to stick at the position. That means that their bat isn't on par with other hitters getting drafted around them. It shouldn't be a surprise that HS catchers have a poor track record. As far as Beede goes he has the stuff but he needs to stop walking 5 guys per 9IP.
  20. I am not very enamored by Beede (in the top 5). Kolek yes, but Beede isn't very interesting (yet). Alex Jackson is a guy I want to know more about regardless if the Twins need him. Need is not even part of the equation in the first rd because if first rd'ers hit then you find places to play them.
  21. A log jam implies that there are good players currently at the position. We are heading into the season with something like Willingham/Arcia/Presley/Parmelee (or Kubel) as the starting OF/DH. And that grouping sucks. At some point some young players will get promoted but there isn't much arriving this year other than some possible September promotions.
  22. It's not my money that would be spent but Diaz is more of a top 100 prospect than a top 25 prospect. It's great to add free talent to the org but it seems a little silly throw silly money at him because he's a living, breathing SS prospect. If he wants to be a FA like other int'l FA's (mostly Japanese players) then he needs to add a clause to his contract granting him FA at the end of the contract because ALL players need 6 years of service time to be unrestricted FA's. This is becoming more common with older int'l FA's though.
  23. Willingham's a fine guy to bring in 2015 on a one year contract if there is a need but there is no reason to decide that now. Everyone is quick to move Arcia to DH while forgetting that someone needs to play OF. Maybe everything works out great next season and Hicks, Buxton and Plouffe are a legitimately good OF but that involves a lot of wishing IMO. Maybe Vargas looks like he is playing himself onto the roster late in the summer but who knows. But this decision can be made next offseason.
  24. Great... The defense of having a .600 OPS starting shortstop is based on guys that played 2-3 decades ago. And those guys aren't even relevant in this discussion. .660 OPS (Ozzie) is much better than .600 and he was one of the best defenders ever. Florimon is good defensively but he's not even close to that good. Gagne was 24 when he sucked in the majors and he was much better in the minors at much younger ages. If he hadn't improved then he wouldn't have been a starter on any team. The problem I have is this blind optimism that somehow Florimon will just start hitting better because it will be his second season. There is very little to suggest that will be the case. I just hope that he doesn't hit worse.
  25. Why are you convinced that Bartlett can't handle 3B/2B if he is still a competent player at SS? Before last season Escobar had something like 50 games played (each) at 3B and 2B. If Bartlett showed that he could handle the position and won the job then why can't he be a futility infielder? Carrying two futility infielders is more common than you think. I gave the example last year but almost every year the Twins have two backup MI'ers. Almost the only way the Twins don't carry two backup MI'ers is if they sign an actual backup 3Bman or if Plouffe is relegated to the bench by Sano. Being the better player is why Escobar or Bartlett should make the team.
