  1. I don't have any grand expectations with the bat but the bat can be solid and the defense can be good. The Twins shouldn't shy away from an upgrade in the future if available but might be able to at least hold down the fort. My expectations of his hitting. .265/.305/.365/.670 I can live with that at SS as long as it comes with his supposedly good defense.
  2. It's pretty clear that the Vikings went after athleticism, upside and players that were dropping. It almost looks like they weren't drafting for this year but trying to find long term valuable players in the mid rds rather than filling holes. A lot of interesting players until they grabbed some special team guys in the 7th.
  3. The ESPN crew liked him a lot. He ran one of the fastest 40's for a RB and they mentioned that he might get some snaps as a WR while definitely being an option as a KR/PR guy. In addition to likely replacing Gerhart.
  4. I consider Barr to be one of those upside picks (Pro Bowler) that comes with significant downside. He's a physical freak and highly disruptive behind the line of scrimmage but can he actually play linebacker.
  5. Mauer is on the ballot as a 1Bman up against Pujols, Fielder, MCab, Davis (injured) and Abreu. He doesn't stand a chance to be voted in.
  6. Bring it on @#$!@#$%$@# http://www.flamewarriorsguide.com/warriorshtm/duelists.htm
  7. The biggest reason to give Dozier an extension now is MN nice. There isn't much of a baseball reason for buying out age 32+ seasons for a MI'er. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't do it. I think there is something to be said about taking care of your producers instead of relying on the serfdom system. The Twins also have a history of taking care of their own (too much so in some cases) so I could see a Denard Span type deal (obviously more guaranteed money). And then we can expect to see a Cameron article on the pointlessness of it.
  8. Bridgewater at #32 is very exciting.
  9. Of course you have to include Tanaka and it's gets pretty close to even if just 2 of those guys sign extensions. Every year people talk about how much talent there will be available in FA in 1-2 years and then guys sign extensions. And Tanaka is the perfect example about why you can't just wait for FA. The top guys get paid and Tanaka got 175M. Scherzer is getting crazy money and I think Lester resigns. Now the Twins are down to Masterson, Shields and a guy that a significant portion of this forum didn't think was worth a 2nd rd pick. Meanwhile almost every team needs pitching and will chasing these guys also.
  10. People need to stop overrating pitching prospects. Meyer could be a future ace or he could completely flop like so many top pitching prospects do every year. The other problem is that really good pitchers don't make it to FA very often so it's not as easy waiting to sign that FA starter in FA. And there are a lot of other teams that are going big in the bidding process. I will pass on Samardzija though. This is the type of move that you make when you are closer as halfchest mentions. It's actually not a better class next year. Especially when you have to dig as far as Liriano and McCarthy. Or a guy that people didn't think was worth giving up a 2nd rd pick for this offseason.
  11. So it's a 3 player draft just like last year. Let's hope that 2 guys can establish themselves like Stewart did last year to make a 1B tier instead of a true 2nd tier. The arms don't really dazzle me so I'm hoping that Jackson and Gordon can be this 1B tier. It's interesting to see Zimmer and Holmes fall as far as they did.
  12. 2 other friends and I bought the 20 game package for 2 seasons (or 3) 10 years ago when Detroit hosted the all-star game. One of the perks was that we were guaranteed the option to buy all-star game tickets. I think the whole package was $250 then. Are those prices worth it? That depends on your financial situation and what your priorities are because that is a lot of money. I checked the stubhub prices and was quite tempted since we could have sold the whole package for 3x or 4x what we paid but my friends wouldn't even consider it. How to price the tickets for a friend? Use stubhub to get a ballpark price for that event and location and then give a fair discount off of that. The futures game was sparsely attended when I went and has by far the lowest resale value. The home run derby was awesome with Bobby Abreu going on an unlikely binge against the Tigers Pudge. The all-star game completely sucked (almost as expected). That definitely isn't worth the money unless you simply want to say that you went.
  13. Voting fans are not smart at all. Cano and Pedroia (and likely Kinsler) will crush Dozier based on reputation. Dozier is on pace to get in during the player or manager selections though. It's hard to ignore how good he has been even though we can't expect him to remain this good. Still good but he's on pace for something like 8 WAR.
  14. Other facts that you have left out while praising Bill Smith for his free spending ways: He cut MLB payroll by 15M the same season that he spent 5ish M on Sano/Kepler/Polanco. He was two seasons away from Target Field opening.
  15. Gordon actually isn't that good. He will hit .240 with a <.300 OBP for the rest of the season. So far I'm holding it together w/o my top 2 pitchers and Garza sucking. I don't think I have enough to win but Giancarlo becoming an elite player helps.
  16. You need to look beyond numbers. He survived on his raw talent alone but he was overmatched with terrible plate discipline and was swinging and missing a lot. His numbers looked okay because he connected with a ball every once in awhile but he needs to have a plan at the plate.
  17. One could argue Correia has been as decent as Nolasco (4 awful games and 2 good ones). But the 50M man isn't going anywhere and Correia will get an extended look since he was halfway decent last year and hasn't been Pelfrey level awful. There was a pretty good argument that Arcia (Hicks) should have started the minors before the season started. He has raw skill but he has so far been overmatched at the plate and it doesn't help that he has missed time with an injury. Keeping him down is not issue.
  18. If everybody at SS has continued to suck they will find a way to keep him up.
  19. going below slot doesn't mean taking a lesser player. If it turns into a 4 player draft (I hope not) and the player that the Twins want to take knows that there is a chance that he slides to #8-10 then he is going to be interested in locking in #5 money minus 200-500K.
  20. I think the Twins could go underslot by 200-500K with the guy they want if they are clearly picking in the 2nd tier. That tier of draftees would be happy to picked at a little below slot #5 since it's easy for any of them to slide to #10. This would not be the case if the Twins draft the last player in a 5 player tier though.
  21. The Twins already have the extra season of control of Meyer. To gain an additional year of control at this point Meyer would have to stay in AAA until mid April 2015. If he was called up before July (floating date) Meyer would go to arbitration a year early though and potentially earn 5ish extra million.
  22. I don't get this fascination that you need to have a lefty in the rotation at the expense of a more talented starter. I hope that the Twins are able to get Meyer and Deduno into the rotation in the next month since they are the only non-rotation options that have a chance at being better than average.
  23. At this point it's fine to call up Meyer since they have guaranteed an additional year of a possible top of the rotation starter near his prime. Of course they will cycle through anybody and everybody to see if they are anything decent.
  24. They could trade a veteran because they have a good prospect or two coming up behind him. That would have been AJ. There was also the Garza trade. Ramos was a nice prospect traded for a veteran although they didn't aim very high on that one. That is 3 trades in the last decade or so. The problem with drafting a lesser talent (especially a risky one) is that the Twins end up with a better chance at getting nothing from a high draft pick. If they can land a potential all-star then it doesn't matter where he plays because all-stars are the difficult guys to obtain and they take a team to the next level.
  25. Why would his speed be worse than last year when he had an injured ankle? Most likely he was either lucky last year or unlucky this year since we are talking about 40-60 game sample sizes. He's K'ing and BB'ing at similar rates with the same XBH%. If people liked him last year then they should like him this year.
