  1. As long as it's a positive move, I'd be good with it. If a team keeps making good trades, winning baseball should eventually come to fruition.
  2. Throw a godfather 4 year deal at Shields Package Nolasco and 8-10 mill and convince some NL team to take him off our hands Go into next year with: Shields Hughes Gibson Millone/May/Pelfrey/Meyer can fight for the last two spots It's no great shakes, but it's a start.
  3. Those Bucks teams from the mid 80s were tough. It's just too bad they had to be in the same conference as the Celtics and 76ers, who were both loaded for bear at the time. And as you said earlier, the early 00s were a pretty rough time in NBA history. The East was in complete shambles. Between the Jordan Bulls and Rasheed/Billups/Hamilton Pistons, basically every team that made it out the East was a sacrificial lamb to whoever one the west. And even then there were some very good teams. The Spurs, Lakers, and Kings were all playing championship-quality basketball in that era. The Nets were a step below at that time, but they were a lot of fun to watch.
  4. Spot. Freaking. On. We are in a golden era of NBA basketball. There are so many good teams/franchises right now. The NBA playoffs have been incredible over the last 5-7 years. The west is just ridiculous right now. People like to look back at the 80s as this golden era of basketball (and as a Celtics fan I'm guilty of this), but most of those people are just remembering the really big playoff matchups. There were a ton of garbage franchises back then. for a good chunk of the 80s the Lakers never had a serious test in the playoffs until they got to the finals.
  5. I'd have no problem giving Torii Hunter a 1 year deal.
  6. I'd love to see an open competition for the starting catching gig next year. Let the best backstop win. It wouldn't be the end of the world to pay Suzuki 6 mill a year for the next couple of seasons to be a backup catcher. Lord knows this team has had worse contracts on the books.
  7. I'll have to disagree with your sentiment on the NBA. These last 6-7 years have been some of the best I've ever seen. This year was a bit down because the east was weak, but the western playoffs were phenomenal. There are so many good franchises right now, and it is fun to watch these different styles going head to head. The league probably bottomed out in the late 90s/early 00s*, but it is definitely back IMO. *Granted I wasn't around to watch the "product" that was getting played in the late 70s/early 80s, back when playing defense was a waste of energy that was better spent finding a quality coke dealer during road trips.
  8. I would spend some $$$ on a time machine, go back and stop the Nolasco deal from happening, then throw a mega-deal at James Shields. Much rather him at, say, 20 mill a year, than Nolasco at 12-13. I second the idea of going after Hunter on a 1-2 year deal. I know in the past Hunter has said he was amenable to resigning with the Twins, so make it happen TR. Gerald Laird as a backup catcher. Dude has been around, is supposed to be a good clubhouse guy, and I can't imagine he'd put up big enough numbers to push himself ahead of Pinto as the #1 catcher. I wanted Pinto to get the rest of this season and next season to prove he can be the guy.

  10. For me the noisy video ads are on the right side of the screen, just below the Comunity Blogs links.
  11. Rather make an offer to Hunter.

  13. I'm a fan of old dudes in baseball, so I'd love to see Blanco back. Hard to believe he'd give up a coaching gig, though.
  14. Man I'd forgot about Jewscott. He used to drop some science on the minor league threads at BYTO. Did he ever make it over here?
  15. Ebay was the grim reaper for card values. Before ebay card prices were defined by small, local markets and there was never really a true way to figure out a card's actual value. Ebay gave card collectors an international marketplace to buy and sell their wares, and it became obvious very quickly that the supply side dwarfed the demand side. Like a lot of you, I collected during some of the worst years value-wise (87-92). Even though they hold no value now, I still look at them as a good investment. I had a ton of fun collecting as a kid. I loved the thrill of pulling a quality card, or time spent trading cards with friends. Back then a pack of cards was the same price as a candy bar, so I could usually talk my dad into buying me a pack whenever we stopped at a gas station. I remember telling my friends to avoid Upper Deck because they cost more than 50 cents a pack. Turns out I was a lil' Nostradamus because it only took a few years and the days of reasonably priced cards were a thing of the past. When I was 17-18 I went into a card shop for nostalgia's sake and almost every customer in their was 20 or older. Kids had been priced out of the market.
  16. Seeing all those names brought a legit smile to my face.
  17. I can't believe what I'm reading here. Has Twinsdaily been infested with so many liberals that marijuana is now considered benign? Well, let me tell you something, Cheech, that stuff will rot your brain just like any cheap street narcotic. Science has proven it. I'd recommend that all of you lay of the devil's lettuce for a few days, sober up, and then watch this documentary some psychologists made a few years back that shows the true dangers of "mary jane." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54xWo7ITFbg
  18. Agreed. I think the offensive potential of a Dozier/Rosario middle infield is great enough that you have to at least give it a try.
  19. Good to see Mastroianni off to a good start.
  20. Haha this is incredible. Hats off to the person that posted it. Agreed. This show, along with Kids in the Hall, influenced the way I looked at comedy. I only got to catch the last couple years of the NBC show, but what a show. It was off the rails almost every episode. The CBS show was alright at first, but he has certainly been mailing it in for the last several years. The only time he seems to get after it now is when someone attempts to rile him up. Dude is still one of the cleverest interviewers out there. Hopefully he will bring his A game more often now that he only has a limited time left on air.
  21. Ever see Apocalyptico? There is a very cool scene of two natives seeing Spanish sailing ships for the first time.
  22. Good thread, BL. I've never experienced anything myself, but I find this sort of thing very fascinating. If you're ever bored, here are a couple of links to random creepy stuff that make for some good reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taman_Shud_Case http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_Masks_Case http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyatlov_Pass_incident http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentich_disappearance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Celeste
  23. It was definitely an ambitious show. The sets, the art direction, the cinematography, etc, were all top notch. Acting was terrific as well. The dialogue, while not always the most consistent, was phenomenal at times and miles ahead of most TV dramas. I think the plot had a few misfires in the end, but it was still gripping. I'd put it a bit below Breaking Bad, The Wire, and The Sopranos, but it would be right up there. Definitely one of the better programs I've ever seen. Can't wait to see what names get attached to future seasons.
