  1. Sub "Buxton" for "Polanco" and let me know whether you would DFA Buxton. Buxton was hitting .147/.256 /.176 a month into the season. Polanco is in a month long slump also. Stuff happens. Kepler is hitting .174/.220/.217 the last 2 weeks. Shall he go away also? He will get out of it, and now that it seems that the Twins will trade Dozier, there is plenty of room for all infielders.
  2. Not sure where you are getting that. Fact: 2017 minors OBP: Zack Granite: AAA .412, A+ .429 Lamonde Wade: AA .399 Last time I checked .429 and .412 > .399
  3. Why the past tense 2 games under .500, with 6 games behind in the division in the L column and 4 games behind the WC? When they cannot win a game or 2 from the Astros, the Red Sox and the Dodgers, which they will need to beat in series in the post-season. I fully expect them to be sellers (and also improve the 2017 team with what they get.) I will be vastly disappointed if Santana, Kintzler (the main goats from last night's game) and Dozier are with the Twins on August 1st.
  4. I am not talking about expensive declining veteran free agents. I am talking about young controllable pitchers that you get in trades of the likes of Santana, Dozier, and Kintzler and by adding your own prospects if necessary from positions of excess, like middle infield. To throw some names: Chad Green, Felipe Rivero, Keone Kela, Michael Feliz, Chris Devenski These types of players. Not the expensive aging ones. For example, I would have loved to see the Twins going to the Pirates and trading Buxton for Starling Marte and Felipe Rivero, adding and or subtracting prospects if necessary.
  5. Almost 30 names. But about 5-6 unknowns. Hoping that the rest will produce, is the equivalent of polishing the proverbial, let is sit overnight and pray that it will turn into gold. Perkins? Really? Resurrection will not help him. He needs more. No. The Twins have done enough of this. 24 years plus of this. Can Burdi, Jay, Melotakis, Chargois, Bard, Curtiss et. al. turn into dominant back of the bullpen material? Of course they can. Counting on Burdi, Jay, Melotakis, Chargois, Bard, Curtiss et. al. turning into dominant back of the bullpen material while competing, is at least irresponsible. Enough of living on a prayer. Go get 2-3 arms that you know they are dominant, and if any of the above become dominant, you got an awesome "problem" in your hands. Enough turd polishing, lipsticking pigs and the rest. Time to act like a real competitive baseball team.
  6. Now you are talking... On the other hand, compare Wade's AA OBP with Granite's AAA OBP, or even Buxton's career MiLB OBP. The majors is a different story.
  7. You do realize that Rosario is the Twins' best hitting OF this year, don't you? wOBA, wRC+, OPS, fangraphs Off, bref oWAR. Any way you count it. Objectively. I don't understand the ridiculous contrived anti-Rosario bias here...
  8. Starting OF in 2016? Over whom? Wade has an .808 OPS in AA. Rosario an .815 in the majors, Kepler .740. Do you mean over Buxton?
  9. The problem with this logic is that the Twins are in a race and do not have their best starters, the people who will give them the highest probability of winning, starting. Who cares for the 10% possibility that they might get a C prospect for Colon?
  10. Here is what's bugging me about this move: The Twins are not going forward with their hottest pitchers. Here are what their current starters have been doing the last 2 weeks: Mejia: 1.86 ERA, 1.241 WHIP, .263 OBA Berrios: 3.24 ERA, 1.800 WHIP, .303 OBA Gibson: 4.73 ERA, 1.350 WHIP, .224 OBA Santana: 6.75 ERA, 1.606 WHIP, .316 OBA Colon: 7.00 ERA, 2.077 WHIP, .400 OBA For sure there were 2 better candidates, maybe 3 for being worse than Gibson lately. This Colon thing makes no sense.
  11. If that were true, they would had cut Perkins instead of dragging him at the GCL for rehab. Same with Santiago.
  12. Past performance is a worse indicator for prospect future performance than current performance Check my full reply above.
  13. Silva's glove and game calling is at or close to MLB-ready. His bat has been the issue. For that reason I had him at 32 in my offseason list, down from 21 the season before. From that writeup: Why is Rainis Silva even in the list, no matter how good his fielding is, since he has no power and he is hitting so lightly? First of all he is still 20 years old. Secondly, he actually hits LHP very well now and he improved. Here are his OPS against LHP by year and league: .539 in DSL in 2013, .521 in the GCL in 2014, .940 in Elizabethton and .889 in Cedar Rapids in 2015, and .754 in Cedar Rapids in 2016. So something clicked for him in 2015 and continued to work in 2016. Those OPS numbers are more than acceptable for a catcher, albeit in a platoon if necessary. The hope is that something will click for the 20 year old when facing RHPs as well and reach his potential as solid every day bat with elite defense in the C position, otherwise his ceiling would be that of a platoon player. So far this season he is hitting .326/.434/.442 overall as a 20 year old in E-town (along with tossing about half of the would be base stealers out.) I think that his potential is a solid MLB bat with elite defense in the majors in the catcher position. This is at the Yadier Molina (career .737 OPS, 98 OPS+) level. Still not close in thinking about my off-season list (I wait for trades etc, until a month or so before ST) but, if he continues, he will definitely receive top 10 consideration. I know that he has been flying way under the radar, but has been on my list the last 3-4 seasons...
  14. Few interesting things: - Gordon is listed as a SS/2B for the first time in those lists - For the first time ever a national prospect list has a brand new IFA signee right after he signed (Jelfry Marte) - Finally, Javier, Diaz, and Graterol get the love they deserve (albeit not as much as they do) outside Twins' Territory, while other IFAs like Palacios, Rainis Silva, and Arraez getting snubbed - Baddoooooooo, should likely be in this list ahead of some people - Jorge, Jay, and Stewart at 7-8-9. Really? - Rortvedt who cannot hit his way out of a paper bag ahead of Garver (and Silva?) - Other than that, it is what it is. Interesting to see the 1-1 draft pick ranked as the 3rd best prospect of this draft.
  15. There are people who have said "blow up the farm" for pitchers like Gray and Quintana and Stroman. Young controllable Aces do not grow on trees, and the Twins really need one, but those 3 are not. Chris Archer on the other hand, is. I would not mind blowing up the farm for Chris Archer, because he will be part of the future (which will not be "mortgaged") and because in positions of immediate need, the "farm" is not that great to begin with. On the same breath, I would trade Dozier, Santana, and Kintzler for further young, controllable rotation and pen help. Maybe Cameron disagrees with this type of thought.
  16. Fangraphs: Jaime Garcia is about right for the Minnesota Twins last sentence: Garcia is a start. He’s help of some sort. His acquisition seems appropriate. But the Twins will need more than Garcia — whether from within or externally again — to sustain their success to date.
  17. I was doing some reasearch to write a profile for Garcia, and I think that another reason that the Twins should like that he is only a rental is his injury history. His pro career kinda goes like this: 2006 - first pro season out of High School 167-2/3 IP 2007 - second pro season - shut down in July with elbow lssues - R&R 2008 - third pro season - elbow blow - TJ surgery 2009 - fourth pro season TJ rehab 2010 - fifth pro season, partial after rehab 163-1/3 IP 2011 - sixth pro season, full, all the way to the WS. Ring! 220-1/3 IP 2012 - seventh pro season, half season lost with labrum inflammation & rotator cuff strain - R&R 2013 - eighth pro season, in May rotator cuff and labrum surgery 2014 - ninth pro season Shoulder "inflamation" R&R in ST, back for a month, TOS surgery Relatively "healthy the last 2 seasons". 171-2/3 IP in 2015 and 113 so far this season. They guy had the combined surgeries of Phil Hughes, Glen Perkins and Trevor May. His innings are getting up there. Again. No matter what, the team that will be signing him in 2018 will be living on a prayer. Hope it is not the Twins... (And as much as we despise the Twins' med stuff decisions to rest and see what happens before final surgery, the Cards' was not that much better in Garcia's situation)
  18. Now that they got rid of Haley, and Hughes bit the dust, they really need a long/mop up man in the pen. I think that part of Hildey's and Roger's problems come from the fact that they have been used for 2+ innings too often. Santiago might actually help the team there
  19. Not 3 catchers. Gimenez will be converted to the set up guy
  20. they might had done it in the Rule 4 draft as well
  21. If any of the Twins' AAA catchers (Garver or Ryan) would have been traded, that 40-man spot would have been Rocker's and would have not announced him coming over until that spot was cleared. I think that Garver is likely promoted and something else must be going on. FWIW I do not see Belisle with the club for much longer...
  22. "Ynoa, who turned 19 at the end of May, was signed by the A’s for Twins as a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic for $800k. He’s the younger brother of Michael Ynoa, the ballyhooed pitching international prospect signed by the Oakland A’s in 2008 for a then-record $4.25 million" FTFY
  23. FYIY, I had Ynoa as the Twins' 20th prospect last off-season with an ETA of 2020 (which after this season seems generous) with Jay, Romero, Gonsalves, Mejia, Burdi, Graterol, Stewart, Melotakis all ahead of him, and the other former Twin of today, Justin Haley one stop behind at 21. Really this trade was Ynoa for Garcia and Haley for Recker. The first part I can deal with. Ynoa has mechanical issues big time and regressed this season. The second part makes me think that something else might be brewing, because I cannot see how would anyone in their right mind trade Haley for Recker, instead of picking up a free agent catcher from the independent leagues.
  24. The last time the Twins won, they went after the biggest arm and the biggest bat available in the offseason (Morris, Davis), added a former Cy Young winner to their pen (Bedrosian) and then "closed holes" (Pags, Willis) and allowed their younger players already a year of 2 in their roles or Rookies (Aguilera, Mack, Tapani, Erickson, Knaublach) to do what they can do. Going half ass has been Ryan's MO. "Adequate starter" does not cut it to compete in the post season. This team is not a Kevin Correia or a Phil Hughes or a Mike Pelfrey or a Ricky Nolasco away. They need 2 arms better than Berrios, to allow Berrios to pitch the way he needs to without overthinking and without thinking that he has to win every game. They need a Jack Morris (or 2) not a Ricky Nolasco. As far as those "good bullpen pieces" go. This sounds a lot like Breslow, Belisle, Jansen, Capps etc. Nope. They need better than that. They need 2 arms who can play at the end of the bullpen in any team in the league. If not, another half-ass off-season that might win them the Central in 2018 and then (once again) one and out...
  25. Not necessarily. Depends on who within the organization steps up. The 2 out of 3 end of the pen arms could be 2 of: Jay, Burdi, Chargois, Curtiss, Bard, Reed etc. May can be a second SP. Romero also. They still do need that power lefty bat to protect Sano. Big time. Not sure that they have anyone like that in the organization. So, yeah, two arms (SP and RP) and a bat are the minimum needed, based on the hope that they can fill in the rest outside the organization. Re: that $80M: Their 2017 Opening Day Roster is at $108M Savings: Santiago $8M Perkins: $6.5M Kintzler: $3M Gibson:$3M Belisle:$2M Breslow:$1.25M Nolasco:$4M Total: $27.72M And trading Santana and Dozier will save them an additional $20M So, even if they need $80M, which they will not. $30M for an Ace, $10M for a closer and $10M for a bat is more like $50. That will get their opening day $ to $130M or $110M (right at the 2017 number, if they trade Santana and Dozier to fill in some of those holes, letting May replace Santana and Gordon Dozier.) Money is not the issue here. Cojones is.
