  1. That's a long line of succession, but as shallow as the Twins' gene pool. Too much inbreeding, something any institution or organization (including baseball teams) are way better without.
  2. Bet Puckett had a higher BMI than Sano when he played RF for the Twins. For the record, Kelly did not quit.
  3. Hey, most of us morons have led a team to at least(*) as many World Series as this GM the last 20some years. (*) never know who is jabbering here.
  4. I'd add Polanco to the list, but totally agree with this. Funny enough, their best MiLB hitter is a guy they just got from Arizona (Daniel Palka.) The problem with the Twins' MiLB operations, is the same with the FO operations, is the same with the Field Management Operations: They hire from within. This is an inbred organization with no new fresh outside voices. Case in point the Twins' latest hire. Seems that all but Pohlad know that inbreeding leeds to extinction, at that might be just around the corner.
  5. Actually, the point might be that if the Twins are not starting blaming their GM and manager for the debacle this season has been, would looks as bad as rehiring the manager they fired after 99+96+96+92 losses... (Oh wait...) No accountability shows no credibility. For both the front office and the owners. I am not saying fire them all right now, but Pohlad could do one single thing without firing anyone right now: He can actually hire a baseball person who has never been associated with a Terry Ryan Front Office and has a record of building wining teams, give him the title of President of Baseball Operations and have Ryan report to him. This person, with the help of any outside the organization advisers he needs, can assess the situation and the staff in the front office, on the field and in the minors for the next 4 months and come the off-season he would have a carte blanche to build the Twins baseball operations including the front office the way he wants to. Also, he would have enough time to assess the personnel to lead the work on deadline trades and the draft. There you have it. For the first time for me for a while: The Twins should not fire Ryan and Molitor. Yet. They should just hire someone else above them. As for the last point, I am not sure that all those guys can play at this level; matter of fact pretty sure that some (Mastro, Suzuki, Tonkin et al) cannot.
  6. It cannot be total system failure if Ryan and Molitor have not failed, it can be partial. Period. Total includes those two. Now saying that he is ok with them, is totally not contradictory. It is his MO. He is saying he likes those guys so much that he is fine with failure. And he has not shown anything other than that.
  7. Buxton has a fatal flaw that first got exposed in the Fall League in 2013: He cannot hit breaking balls. At any level. When the book was out, other than half season in Chattanooga and a week and a half in Rochester, he has been strikeout prone. The Twins have to work with him to fix that. They should have him sit with his bat on his shoulder and look at pitches until the count in 3-2 and then have him take anything that spins like a breaking ball. He has to recognize pitches better. People have been talking about Sano not loosing weight this offseason. Much more disappointing Buxton hacking at balls in the dirt like it is 2015, which means he put zero work this offseason. That's why one of these 2 is a major league player right now where the other is hitting like Drew Butera at AAA. Maybe he is just adverse to work or does not get it or something, and if that is the case the Twins should sell as long as he still has some value...
  8. Same with Abad. 4/27 against Cleveland. A game the Twins lost 5-6. He inherited 2 runs and both of them scored, allowed an additional unearned run and got just one out. He did not do his job by any means. So why that is a good game for him, I do not know.
  9. Not sure how you are counting here. Tonkin had 10 games. In 4 of those he had inherited runs (6 total.) In all 4 games he let all 6 runs score. So he did not do his job. In other 2, he was scored upon, one of them a game loser. So he did not do his job. So for sure in 6 games he did not do what he was called to do. and that becomes 4-6 In other game he gave a hit, a walk, and got two outs. Did he do his job? Maybe. There is no way he did his job in 7 games though
  10. I think that the assumptions that: a. Perkins will return and b. Perkins will be better than Jepsen (or better than Perkins has been lately) are way too optimistic. Matter of fact, the Twins should have Perkins in Fort Myers or some other nice and warm place until his FB hits 95 and his slider hits 85 again, before they bring him up to the team. As far as who should replace Jepsen goes, I'd rather see the Twins bring up Chargois now for one of Fien/Tonkin, Burdi when he is 100% for the other, quit the Duffey as a starter experiment and have those 3 fight out for the closer position with May. I'd rather give the ball to any of those guys than Jepsen (or the ghost of Perkins' past) any time.
  11. In case you did not know, Thurman Munson, a multiple All-Star player and projected Hall of Famer, died at age 32 when he crash-landed his private plane. Tacky comment to say at least. /over and out
  12. Not that easy Berrios' rankings peaked this season. He was ranked 28th overall @BA, 16th @MLB.com, and 17th @BP. This is a great scouting report by Bernie Pleskoff who indicates his upside as a #2 or #3 in a competitive team (and also, unlike this write up, indicates some clear weaknesses - heck he is 22, he better have weaknesses). Rewind a bit: Alex Meyer's peaks: #14 BP (2015), #28 mlb.com (2014) and #45 BA (2014) and arguably against bigger competition. Meyer is the only Twins' prospect with stuff that can make him be a true #1 in a competitive team. Likelihood is a different story. The likelihood that Berrios will be a #2 or #3 is higher than Meyer will be a #1. But this does not make him a better prospect. Regardless, I hope that he has a great long career with the Twins
  13. So you want to get rid of the Twins' best 2 starters so far. That's the key to winning...
  14. The Twins really screwed this up by demoting Polanco. Seems like Plouffe will go for a short rehab assignment any day now and will be ready to come up 5/3. They need Mastroianni and his .575 AAA OPS as much as they needed D. Murphy and his .562 AAA OPS. I'd go to AA and grab Levi Michael. He deserves it more than Beresford and Tovar, has an actual ceiling and is hitting .293/.406/.362 after 2 seasons in a row of 800+ OPS in AA. It's about time that Dozier and his .287 OBP ride some pine.
  15. And Drew Butera is hitting .429/.500/.714 this season. I bet he figured it out too.... SSS
  16. The problem is that there is a reasonable alternative for the Centerfield position, but Ryan has been blind about it: Eddie Rosario. He started his career as a centerfielder and UZR likes him there better than Buxton. I would have zero problem with Rosario at Center for the rest of the season with the glove, if he were not hitting in despicable levels...
  17. Um. No. 7.34 FIP, 1.750 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9 and 2.3 K/9 Duffey's numbers after that one start. Even his game score (47) was lower than anything that Hughes had (50, 52, 54, 57), Gibson had a couple horrid games but a 49 and 63, Milone's highest was also a 47, and Santana had 3 games with 53, 56 and 57. Of course Nolasco had a 65 and a 72. So no. You are wrong.
  18. I am not sure how can anyone said that Duffey did his job with just 4 innings pitched. I understand the argument regarding Milone doing worse the second and third time facing a lineup. If you check Duffey's numbers, you will found an even more pronounced discrepancy. Thus using the same argument Duffey also belongs in a pen. Duffey has not proven that he can pitch 6 innings in the majors yet. And he will be an asset in the pen that is really hurting. I would not trust Milone in a contender's pen. Milone belongs to AAA.
  19. Re: 40-man spot for Berrios. No need to DFA anyone. Perkins is done. He can move to the 60 day DL and go rest his shoulder in Fort Myers or some place and stay in the DL until his FB hits 95 mph and the slider 85.
  20. That's the idea. Especially having Milone and his 86 mph "fast"ball in the division facing Sano, Park, Plouffe, Dozier & Co multiple times a season.
  21. Last time I checked this club: a. was a contender last season and b. are not yet out of the race. You got to play your best starters now in order to win now. If Nolasco cools off, or performs like Milone, then you get rid of him. I do not have a crystal ball to say that he will be hot or cold any time soon. The point is that he is hot now and it is silly not to pitch him just in case he might cool off. It is like sitting a guy with 20 games hitting streak because the likelihood is that the streak will get broken next time. Duffey last season proved that he can pitch well the first time through an order (opponent OPS .446 innings 1-3), not that great the second time through (opponent OPS .810 innings 4-6), and pretty horribly the third (opponent OPS 1.320 innings 7+). And that happened mostly after the rosters expanded. Ideal profile for a reliever with 2 pitches, which is what he is. If the Twins want to bring up Duffey and pop him in the pen instead of Fien/Tonkin, I'd be all for it. Rotation, not that much, until he can prove he can go through an order at least twice with moderate success, which he has not done yet.
