Article: Flipping Toward A Brighter Future
Thrylos replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Alright. Name a single World Series Champion who got there doing that. The Marlins flipped their whole team, after they won (twice), but that is not the way to win or sustainably build a culture of excellence and winning... Enough with the good enough- 28 replies

Article: Seth's Offseason Blueprint
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Data makes this not a true statement, since his second half was pretty similar, if not better, to his first half, and pretty there with his career numbers. 2016 1st half: 3.75 FIP, 3.88 ERA 2nd half: 3.73 FIP, 3.41 ERA career: 3.70 FIP, 3.55 ERA He is a mediocre bullpen arm in his prime. Can he be usefull as the last guy out of a competitor's pen. Sure. So could be Kintzler (3.61 FIP/ 3.15 ERA 2016, 3.67 FIP, 3.33 ERA career). To compete, pick one and keep him at the end of your pen (got to get rid of replacement level O'Rourke, 4.11 FIP/ 3.96 ERA 2016, 4.42 FIP/4.98 ERA career, as well.) Then add 6 pitcher better than them ahead of them, if you want to build a pen that would help you contend. I'd pick Pressly because he is the younger and cheaper of the two (and his periferals are better), but Kintzler has to go, esp. if Molitor is planing to use him as a set up man. Also, where is Duffey? He could be one of these 6 arms in the pen, and he could be a real asset there... If the Twins do not trade Santana this season, when his value is relatively high and there are not too many good FAs, it will be a failure. An 103 loss team has no business trotting a 34 year old with half a UCL who would be a decent number 4 in a competitor, as their "Ace". I'd definitely put May in the rotation as well.- 33 replies

Article: Top Five Twins Bounce Back Candidates
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope that Plouffe bounces back with another team. Rosario did not drop. That's what he is, so not much bounce there. My number one bounce back candidate is Hughes. Second, Park.- 33 replies

Article: Predicting the Twins 40 Man Roster Additions
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd add Goodrum. Good chance to replace Escobar as a bench/utility this season (can play SS, 3B, 2B and OF) No need to add Turner. He cannot hit- 18 replies

Getting Late Early For Glen Perkins
Thrylos commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
At this point, I'd stick a fork on Perkins, because his 40-man spot might be more valuable for the Twins than he will ever be. -

Article: How Much Can The Twins Spend On A Catcher?
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We will find out... Got to disagree with the rushing part: Usually players "get it" at some point. If one player, got it, there is no reason to keep him down or slow him. -
Article: How Much Can The Twins Spend On A Catcher?
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that this is some very interesting piece of data that can help frame the conversation. From BP. Catcher defense, that including framing + throwing out + blocking runs above average. Descending. It includes AAA, which makes comparing JR Murphy with Castro possible, as far as defense goes. It also has Mitch Garver (next page; check the name of the guy above him...) who has a short sample at AAA. Based on this, I think that the Twins might be better of with a Murphy/Garver two headed beast in the majors than Castro. -
Article: A Look At The Free Agent Catcher Market
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Check out how he is doing in AFL and compare it to how the BA #34 overall prospect is doing? The thing is that most national publications are biased against later round picks, and against players that they have not seen playing much. I think that Garver should be a top 100 prospect. He is at level of Jorge Alfaro, if not better. -

Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Defensive metrics here. It really is Castro or bust as far as FAs go. Otherwise not worth it. I do understand that having a good framer catching a young pitching staff might help. Intriguing name on that defensive metrics list: Travis d' Arnaud. If I were the Twins, I'd try to see what can make it happen, in a package probably with one of the Mets' pitchers... -
Article: Twins Have Unmatched Run Of Instability At DH
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Having the DH position as a rotating position to keep for regulars who might have slight issues and/or need a rest is the way to go. Unfortunately, the Twins made a pretty large investment on Buyng Ho Park to be their designated designated hitter. Just did not work out the way that the Ryan Front Office have planned it (captain obvious statement of the year.) Also: No matter what, unless someone is practically crippled, like Kubel, you never want to make a young player a full time DH while they have the opportunity to grow in a particular position. DH was established to extend the career of hitters who just could not play the field any more, like the aforementioned Molitor, Jim Thome, Don Baylor, etc. You just don't do that to a kid, if you have any sense.- 47 replies

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- A lot of Twins fans have not realized it, after a season with the worst record losses, since the franchise moved to Minnesota, 103, but this week signified too major events for the Twins: The start of the 2016-2017 off-season that finds them tied in the first place in the AL Central with a .500 record The start of a brand new baseball leadership in the faces of Derek Falvey as the first ever Twins' Chief Baseball Officer and Thad Levine as the Twins Senior VP and General Manager. And, even more importantly, this is the first time that the Twins have hired their baseball leadership from outside the organization, since 1986 when Andy MacPhail, replaced (for practical purposes) Calvin Griffith, as the Twins baseball leader. Hope runs high and I want to wish the new Twins' leadership good luck, and offer a single piece of advise: Please do not assume, because the bar is so low and that hope runs high, that the Twins' fan base does not have high expectations. As a matter of fact, some of us are setting the bar not at the level of who you are replacing, but at the level of what happened the first time new blood infused the franchise. And that is a very high bar, set at the level of 2 World Championships in 4 seasons. What would be your one piece advise to the new Twins' baseball leaders, along with your well wishes?

Article: Twins Geography: Puerto Rico
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great stuff! Here is the complete list of the MLB players who were born in PR. Some of them, like Jorge Posada and JC Romero were drafted after they came to the US to go to College, so the circumstances are a bit different for all of them because they were picked by US-scouts (both Posada and Romero went to College in AL, btw, of all places) and not PR-based scouts. It is the same argument one can use for Chili Davis and Devon White (both born in Jamaica but went to High School in CA and NY, respectively...) Should probably add Carlos Baerga, Javy Lopez, Danny Tartabull to the list of the impressive PR-born players. And as far as Twins' go, I know that it was forgettable, but Ruben Sierra finished his career as a Twin. Lester Oliveros was also born in PR.- 5 replies

Article: Heat Check: What To Expect From Chargois
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd add Duffey's for sure and maybe even Jay's names to the list. This has the bones of a good bullpen for the considerable future. Hopefully the likes of Kintzler and Boshers/Abad/Boyer/Thompson/insert-garbage-heap-pickup go away and never come back, allowing these players to develop. Back in the day (and several teams still do this successfully) the pen was a development assignment for pitchers who were deemed not yet just ready for an MLB rotation. Pitchers like Jay or Romero or Jorge could contribute in the pen for a couple of years starting from 2017, for example. This is what they should have done with Berrios last season. Get them up, expose them to MLB hitters and MLB noise and MLB ballparks, but ease them in. Let them have success and confidence before you throw them in to start and be responsible for the whole game outcome. -
Article: Discussing Domestic Abuse
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As with any profession, in baseball, and sports in general, you will find a range from criminals to saints. Of course they get a bit more exposed than most other professions, except maybe acting/TV. On the domestic abuse subject, I am glad that baseball is doing something, but it is not enough. I'd love it if they suspend the player without pay (and instead of the clubs saving the $), to deposit that pay to an MLB domestic abuse charity that would: a. pay to teach minor league kids (and some of them coming from places were machismo is the rule) about domestic abuse and what is expected from them as potential role models b. Fund shelters for domestic abuse victims c have a greater population educational program about domestic abuse. same with NFL. They should put their $ where their mouths are. Otherwise it is just going through the motions. Also, they should be treating equally all criminals. Right now they pick and chose. Domestic abuse is a no no, drunk driving is fine, not sure what armed robbery is, and betting on baseball is a lifetime ban. They need a more consistent policy...- 37 replies

Article: Following The Cubs' Blueprint
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that the Twins should try to follow the Indians' and not the Cubs' blueprint. The Indians are positioned for sustained success, the Cubs will be relying on new Free Agents when these get ineffective (and have albatross contracts.) Guess the organization feels this way too, since the new baseball head comes from the Indians and not the Cubs... -
Article: Big Splash? More Like Big Slash
Thrylos replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
a. you do realize that based on what you said (ie. that the teams with the best 2 starting pitchers and the best bullpen are most likely to make it to the World Series,) you just contradicted your argument that it is a "crapshoot". It is either luck or not. And having the best 2 SP and the best pen is not luck, but planning and building. b. Highest salaries does not equate "biggest" markets. c. there are no playoffs in baseball. -
Article: Big Splash? More Like Big Slash
Thrylos replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just out of curiosity, have you checked who is in the World Series and what is their payroll and attendance? The position that the current system hurts "mid and small market" teams is a fallacy. Have the Twins been non-competitive because they were mid market? Or because incompetence leads to non competitiveness? Data: Here are the pairings in the WS the last 10 years plus this one: Indians Cubs/LA Royals Mets Giants Royals Red Sox Cardinals Giants Tigers Cardinals Rangers Giants Rangers Yankees Phillies Phillies Rays Red Sox Rockies Cardinals Tigers About the same mid/small market teams got there as big market teams It is not about the market, it is about: a. knowing how to build a competitive team b. have the right people to manage this team c. be willing to be opportunistic and make sacrifices when you see a window of opportunity d. have a fanbase that demands winning. The Twins have failed in all of those 4 for a long long time. -

Not really. Hopefully they will get rid of aging AAAA players and bring up most of the 2016 Chattanooga team that finished 10 games over .500. Pitching could be Rochester's strength.- 37 replies

Article: 40-Man Roster Decisions: The Hitters
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Few names missing on the adds to protect, and more importantly Nico Goodrum's who can a break through season last year hitting .275/.352/.464 and can provide flexibility in 3B, SS, OF. Kinda like the Escobar and Santana roles, but with more potential. And solves the "Keep Plouffe to back up Sano, just in case" issue) Someone will snag him, if the Twins do not add. I thought about the catching situation in 2017 (and wrote about it in my 40 man roster spot...) For me Garver and Murphy, unless the Twins target a young MLB-ready C in a Dozier and/or Santana trade, should be the next MLB-level catchers. One of Centeno and Turner should be on the 40-man. And you have a catcher with pretty horrible blocking skills (the rest of his D is ok) and a catcher who is worse hitting than Butera. Who wins? I'd say Centeno because of his LH bat that hit .265/.326/.424 against RHPs and would be more useful in situational plays at the MLB-level than Turner. You hardly make substitutions for defense at catcher. However with 2 outs and bases loaded with a RHP and Murphy with his career .226/.268/.295 against RHPs (he is actually hitting fairly reasonably against LHPs) up, Centeno might win you a game... Plouffe has to go. Who would I rather have? Grossman or Palka? No-brainer, Palka. Grossman's got to go. Granite can be a decent OF backup if needed. The only other name missing is one who I am afraid that a team might pull a Johan Santana on the Twins: Amaurys Minier. I have been going back and forth on this because of the level he has been playing, but the guy has so much potential that I'd hate to see him gone. And I would gladly give up Plouffe's (or Escobar's that Vielma and Goodrum cover) spot to protect him.- 37 replies

Article: 40-Man Roster Decisions: The Pitchers
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no baseball reason to keep him. As far as baseball considerations go, he should be DFA'd. However that way the Twins will be responsible for $7.2 M ($6.5 for 2017 & $0.7 buyout of 2018 option.) If they keep him on the 40-man and move him to the 60-day DL next season, insurance will pay part. Plus it is the perceived PR potential issue that fans would like to have a Minnesotan in the team despite his horrible play and that the Twins should be Minnesota nice to Minnesotan players regardless their capabilities, Hope the new regime puts an end to this nonsense...- 43 replies
