Article: Arizona's Cautionary Tale
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One of the things that needs to be mentioned is that there has been a lot of decisions made by the owner (eg, the Greinke and Hale signings) and that is not a good situation. So a lot of their situation is because of the owners and not their FO... BTW. I think that a rebuilding team has no business signing over their prime veterans to multi-year contracts and it would be the worst thing the Twins could do... -

Good stuff, but check this list out: 1.) Tim Laudner - 42 in AA Orlando in 1981 2.) Moe Hill - 41 in A Wisconsin Rapids in 1977 3.) Stan Holmes - 37 in A Visalia in 1983 3.) Cotton Nash - 37 in AAA Portland in 1971 5.) Richard Means - 36 in A Charlotte in 1962 6.) Miguel Sano - 35 in FM/NB in 2013 6.) Danny Walton - 35 in AAA Tacoma in 1974 6.) Luis Lagunas - 35 in A WRK in 1966 9.) Daniel Palka - 34 in AA/AAA in 2016 9.) Mark Funderburk - 34 in AA Orlando in 1985 9.) Andy Kosco - 34 in AAA/WRK in 1965 12.) Cotton Nash - 33 in AAA Evansville in 1970 13.) Chad Rupp - 32 in AAA Salt Lake City in 1997 13.) Moe Hill - 32 in A Wisconsin Rapids in 1974 15.) Adam Brett Walker - 31 in AA Chattanooga in 2015 15.) Garrett Jones - 31 in A/AA (Ft. Myers/New Britain) in 2004 15.) Michael Ryan - 31 in AAA Edmonton in 2002 15.) David Ortiz - 31 in FM/NB/SLC in 1997 15.) Mark Funderburk - 31 in A Visalia in 1979 15.) Moe Hill - 31 in A Wisconsin Rapids in 1975 15.) Andy Kosco - 31 in A Wisconsin Rapids in 1964 15.) Chuck Weatherspoon - 31 in Class B Wilson in 1961 Other than the 4 in bold, (and 3 because it is too early to determine), the rest are not very good players, so home runs by themselves is not a great indicator of stardom. Take those 4 out and the list reads like the who is who of mediocrity (and I know that Laudner has a WS ring, but he could not hit his weight.) Laudner's total in '81 was 44. He was called up and hit 2 HRs with the Twins.- 14 replies

Article: Santana Shines Among Sad Starter Group
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana is half a UCL or another drug suspension away from having zero value for the Twins in 2017. They got to sell high. I'd love to see what a combination of Santana, Dozier, Buxton, Walker, Stewart, Gordon + ? can bring in a couple different trades. Can they bring back (let's say) an Alex Reyes and a Michael Kopech? Maybe. Maybe more. I'd take that. Winning teams are build around great starting pitching these days. Santana is not great and the Twins need at least 2 potentially great starting pitchers to go some place, and they better aim that high, instead of bringing in second and third tier players, if they want to win. -
Not sure that it makes sense for Plouffe to be in this team. I'd rather see Vargas instead of him. Also Mauer is clogging the bases. I'd rather see him down the order.

One does not belong in the above grouping. Hint: he has 111 OPS+ and has been playing out of position for all but 30 games this season

Article: A Broken Defensive Heart
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree, definitely defense is hurting the team big time. The SABR index, as mentioned is limited to only 3 players and lots of extrapolating is necessary. Not to worry, one can use the similar Fangraphs, team defense index. Link here. And yes the Twins are the fourth worst team in the majors and the second worst in the AL. That hurts the team. But it is not a big enough excuse about the pitching. Notched just 2 sports above the Twins in that defensive list are the Cardinals, and one spot above them are the Mets. The Mets are 3rd in MLB ERA (but first in FIP) and the Cardinals 11th in ERA (but 6th in FIP.) The Twins' pitching staff is 29th in ERA and 27th in FIP. Yes bad defense hurts overall, but does not hurt a team quite as much as one might think it does. It might make the difference in making it to the post-season or not (Mets and Cardinals) but it does not make a staff that stinks (Twins) to stink that much more... They are awful... So the emphasis should be in getting better pitchers, with the fielding being a bit more than the cherry on top, but it kinda is. Horrible pitchers with the best fielding in the world would do you no good, ask the Angels, the 8th best fielding team in the majors and 3rd in the AL... -
Cannot disagree much with this, but kinda have to get it in perspective. The Ryan Twins never had any sort of visible, rational plans. In the 90s, the general plan for the Ryan teams was: Sell everyone with value for whatever, sign every old Minnesotan as a free agent, close holes with whatever comes cheap, and do a dumpster dive to fill in the blanks. In the 00s, the general plan for the Ryan teams was: Sell everyone with value for whatever, sign every old Minnesotan as a free agent, close holes with whatever comes cheap, and do a dumpster dive to fill in the blanks, have no judgement about who should stay or who should go (Ortiz vs. LeCroy; Tyner the DH in the team that had both the CY and MVP award winners.) In the 10s, the general plan for the Ryan teams was: Sell everyone with value for whatever, sign every old Minnesotan as a free agent, close holes with whatever comes cheap, and do a dumpster dive to fill in the blanks, have no judgement about who should stay or who should go (and extend players after career years) Sounds more like a reactionary Modus Operanti than a plan to me...

I could not agree more, other than adding, package Buxton in a trade to increase the return. -
I did not say that he should not be paid what he is paid or that the Twins should have not extended him or that I personally have any issues with his contract. As a matter of fact, I am on the record multiple times defending that contract and saying that the Twins could absolutely not do differently because the town that almost erupted when Kirby was talking to Boston as a free agent for certain erupt if Mauer left. They could not do otherwise. All I am saying is that if you look where Mauer's performance ranks to where his compensation ranks (and feel free to normalize for the league which is actually a better comparison; eg. Mauer's contract in 2016 was about 78% of the league's top annual contract -Kershaw's-vs. Carew's in 1978 being 18% of the league's top contact - Ryan's- I think that this is a good compromise.) you'd find out that he is overpaid for what he is producing. Not that the Twins could have done otherwise. Ryan was between a rock and a hard place, and likely that's part of the reason he retired and let Smith deal with the mess...

All of those rankings are (and correctly) judged against the one that is not mentioned: Total Compensation: #1 - in Twins history and it does not meet expectations. This is exactly what the problem with Mauer is. It is not that he is not a good player that has been a great player. It is that he is not the best player ever the Twins have had, even though he is compensated like he is.

Article: Dozier's Not Jerking Around
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rewind 4 years. Substitute "Dozier" with "Willingham" Rewind 2 years. Substitute "Dozier" with "Suzuki" those sediments could have been valid with those two, but know we know better. Lessons got to be learned. Also, there is absolutely zero evidence that Dozier can provide "leadership" or "lead by example". He did not do that the past 3 seasons, why would next season(s) be different? Got.to.sell.high. And selling high means to pain you a bit when you do it (like it is the situation here with Dozier,) but you do it for the long run. -
Article: Fixing Jose Berrios
Thrylos replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, he is "cocking" his arm back for fractions of a second. That's what he has always been doing and generated velocity and command. My theory is that he is thinking too much, talking to too many people who are suggesting stuff, trying to implement those suggestions and make the 'perfect pitch'. Someone should just tell him not to think, nobody cares about the outcome of the game this season, and just go out and have fun playing the game. Maybe he will find his zone that way, instead of being in analysis-paralysis misery. -

They did not re-sign them, they extended them. And let me know, if you were not going to go nuts (to quote Prince,) if the Twins decided to had them both walk as free agents.... Just sayin'- 164 replies

Article: Pitching Pipeline: What's Next?
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure. But here is another point: They did not need Gordon, because they have another young shortstop who at the same age and also 2.7 years younger at the same league had a .780 OPS (and the previous season in A had an .813 OPS vs Gordon's .696) What drives me crazy about the way that the Twins spend their resources, be it high round draft picks, free agents, waiver wire pickups and what not, is that there seems to be no plan at all. You cannot pick 3-4 centerfielders with the first draft pick together because you end up in the Span-Revere-Hicks-Buxton oopsie mess. You cannot horde SS the same way, especially when you have glaring weaknesses in the organization is positions like LHSP and C. That "best player available" situation is just ridiculous. Because in reality, is not the best player available, is who the Twins' braintrust thinks is the best player available, and more times than not, it really is not.- 164 replies

Article: Examining Arbitration-Eligible Players
Thrylos replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They need to sell high on Kintzler hopefully before the month ends. They also need to get rid of Plouffe, hopefully before the month ends. I do not see any takers on Santiago or Milone this month, so they need to go (one way or another - talking about replacing Nolasco with a worse pitcher...) before 2017 starts. I'd keep Gibson, Escobar, and Pressly and listen to offers for all 3 (and any other veteran.) 2017 has to be a real rebuild by a real Front Office... -

Article: Pitching Pipeline: What's Next?
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have to agree with this ranking, because it is a pipeline (ie. the order they will appear in the majors) vs. a prospect (ie. who has the potential to be a better pitcher ranking.) Mejia will be up in less than a month. I'd probably add Wheeler second, because (if still with the club) he might be MLB-ready next season. I'd also add Aaron Slegers to the mix. Probably after Gonsalves. So something like Mejia-Wheeler-Gonsalves-Slegers-Jay-Stewart-Jorge, with Romero and (Randy) Rosario on their heels. Pending trades of course. And that is the kicker: If you add Duffey and Berios (who are borderline ready this season) to the equation, the Twins have a whole lot of pitchers in their pipeline, and come 2018 there will be a log jam (with the first 4 in that list, plus the 2 mentioned here, plus Gibson and May and Santana and Hughes). 10 pitchers for 5 spots Some of them will not pan out. But the Twins should start thinking about trading some, before they do not pan out...- 164 replies

He still has to pitch in Fort Myers. The last player I remember who was picked from full season A (same Midwest League that Ramirez is pitching in, btw) who stuck was a guy named Johan... He is not in the same conversation

Hard to argue with any of those names, but got to add a handful more: Daniel Palka. I personally had him ahead of Walker when the Twins acquired him, but arguably he jumped to a top 5-10 type of prospect this season. Huascar Ynoa. His debut in the states as an 18 year old has been much better than that at the DSL as a 17 year old. His control improved by leaps and bounds and he is really dominating the GCL Trevor Hildenberger. He has been on the second group of relievers in the Twins' organization in my mind (with the Jones' and Williams) but this season he moved to the first class with Burdi, Chargois and likely ahead of Reed. A bit older for his teams, he mind end up being Anthony Slama or Rob Delaney, but very impressive season Mike Theofanopoulos. See above but from the left side. 30th round pick from Berkeley, he was not in a prospect conversation. Right now, with his compatriot Melotakis, are probably the top 2 LHRP prospects in the organization. LaMonte Wade. Opened eyes last season and the most important thing is that he did not close them this one. He has Matt Lawton written all over him for some reason. Lewis Diaz and Amaurys Minier. They both needed a rebound season and they got one after disappointing 2015
