That would cut his trade value in half...

The problem with Pressly (and Tonkin) is that these guys have had the opportunity to show what they have and it is not much. Pressly pitched 208 MLB innings at the rate of 3.55/3.70/4.25 ERA/FIP/xFIP, 6.58 K/9, and 1.33 WHIP, which is mediocre. He has only one above average pitch (slider) according to pitch values. The problem with keeping a mediocre reliever is the opportunity cost on players such as Reed, Hildenberg, Jones (who are not spring chicken btw). Bottom line is seeing what they can do (or not) is much more important for the Twins that giving a mediocre reliever, who will not be part of their future competitive teams, more reps. Lost opportunity (and lack of vision, of course) has been a major issue with the Twins, and about time that changes.

The Twins really need to rebuild, and rebuild in a serious way. They are not a starter, a closer, and a catcher away from being competitive. Which means that 30 year old free agents should not be close to their target. Their core is at around 23 years old. If you are looking to build a team that will be competitive for a long time, you want that core to reach their primes together. Which means that nobody over 26 should (*) be around, in 2017. Nobody. This makes the likes of: Mauer (*) Dozier Escobar Plouffe Grossman Park (*) Centeno Schafer Santana Gibson Milone Kintzler Pressly Tonkin May Santiago Hughes (*) Perkins (*) Boshers O Rourke Wimmers etc Goners. Packaging them creatively with decent prospects that the organization does not need (Walker, Stewart, Gordon, etc.) and targeting 2-3 good arms younger than 23, and a catcher that age, would be the way to go. Dozier, Santana, May, Gibson, Santiago do have value and in combination with prospects might bring back what the Twins need. Other than May, I will be disappointed if any of those 4 are in a Twins' uniform come next Spring, because it will tell me that the new CBO has no idea how to rebuild either. Dozier can be the player who can get a competitive team to the next level, for the Twins, he is lipstick. Agreed about international free agents, but they will be much younger than the current core. Do not forget the first overall pick in 2017. I would pick the best and closest to MLB-ready arm, no matter if Joe DiMaggio's second coming was around. They need to go for need now. Of course, a total organizational shift in developing pitchers, starting with a wholesale clearance of pitching coaches starting from the majors and the MiLB pitching coordinator should be happening. I would have no issues with a rotation of Berrios, Mejia, Gonsalves, Jay, and a new young arm and a pen of Burdi, Chargois, Duffey, Taylor, Melotakis, Jones, and Reed or Hildenberger. Half of those minor leaguers are about to get too old, they better see what they got. (*) Unfortunately there will not be many takers for Mauer, Perkins, Park, and Hughes. The Twins might just need to cut the cord with Perkins, play the Mauer contract out and hope that Park and Hughes return great so they can trade them during the season.

I'd like to see what a new mindset in the organization regarding pitching will do for pitchers like Stewart (and others.) That said, I'd have a hard time ranking him above Jorge who was much better than him at Fort Myers and probably at least equal in Chattanooga. His ball rate was a bit alarming at AA. For some reason, save Gonsalves, all starters in Chatanooga had below average K-rates and this might be a reflection to the pitching staff there and/or game planning. Artaega's highest level ever, and not unlikely that he is over his head...

Article: Twins Pitchers Need A New Voice
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
^^^^^ This. Baseball people at any level of this organization should have to prove that they are not part of the problem to retain their jobs. Period. This includes their pitching coach of course, and I am not sure what his defense would be other than maybe a version of "I cannot recall" or paraphrasing certain Dead Kennedys' lyrics...- 43 replies

I had Graterol 28th in my last off-season list, good to see a player who did not throw a single pitch in the US soil get love Totally warming up to Granite. 56 SB with a close to 1:1 BB:K ratio in AA and close to .300 BA is pretty close to eye popping. Total lack of power or not. He is putting close to Ben Revere numbers (compare their AA numbers) without getting half the attention. I think that Thorpe with 2 seasons out of baseball is ranked pretty high. I'd rather see him throw a pitch (or 200 close to his previous level) to believe that he will actually have a career And, unless you are up for a big surprise, counting down that far makes me think that someone is omitted. A guy who would win the comeback prospect of the year for the Twins. Hint: He had his best season at the plate, played all over the field decently despite some nagging injuries. Former second round draft pick. Agreed re: Rortvedt's ranking. He has all the makings of a stud catcher, if he can adjust to the wooden bat. And he has not yet. Give him another year or two and he could be a top 10 prospect in this organization, but not now... Good stuff. And, officially, the Twins are 0-0

There is no hate of Gordon here. I don't know the guy. And, yes, Polanco should be the SS of the future. He is light years ahead of Gordon. And thankfully, the future is now.

You realize that the above was a comparison between Gordon (who will likely be a top 10) player and a player who is playing the same position and is ranked at this level who actually has better numbers than him, right?

FWIW, Vielma (who has zero power and OPS is not a perfect measure of his hitting skill,) had a higher OBP than (almost) everyone's darling Nick Gordon this season, and, of course, has a better glove than the aforementioned. I think that he really did take a turn (albeit small) this season and will not be surprised if he is a 40-man roster addition. Definitely should be ranked higher.

I kinda have to believe that Light is fixable. With the Twins has been like Jim Hoey with a lesser fastball, but what we see does not tell the whole story. He has been relieving only for 2 seasons. And has started both those seasons pretty well as far as BB/9 and WHIP go, and finished all over the place. Could be fatigue. Still has a couple of options left so no reason to give up on him. Slegers has Loek Van Mil written all over him. I bet the Twins will try to turn him into a reliever and when he is not dominating, they will trade him for Brian Fuentes or something. Speaking of relievers Melotakis and Rosario (because that's where I see him end up) are too low I think. They both can be in the Twins pen next season and be an improvement over the likes of Boshers, O'Rourke, and Perkins's ghost.

Looking at Harrison and Cederoth (and Landa to a lesser extend) that low, is a full testament to the Twins inability to identify, draft, and develop talent. Cederoth's numbers on paper and from 30,000 ft might look 'very good', but if you look at the fact that the second half of his age 23 season in single A ball was 20/33 BB/K, 1.540 WHIP, I find it very hard to say that he can dominate in the majors, when he cannot do that in the Midwest League. Good to see him to play finally, but darn, what a waste of a pick...

Article: President Candidates Narrowed To Five
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hold it for a second. Narrowed to 5 is much different than the title of the referred piece ("could stop at five) and way much different than the line before the last in the relevant piece in the linked article: It’s still possible that list of outside interviews will grow. So really no news here...- 57 replies

Article: Penciling A 2017 Starting Rotation
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
International free agents, including young Cubans. Only way to do it in a rebuilding team. Or overpaying for the 2017 draft and used as tax money... Or to put in the bank and compound interest to extend Sano when that is needed...- 254 replies

Article: Penciling A 2017 Starting Rotation
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kinda feel cruel doing this, but (let's say that I even accept that defense can save 0.5 a run off ERA) that would make them have the 27th best ERA in the majors instead of the 29th best. just sayin'- 254 replies

Article: Penciling A 2017 Starting Rotation
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nope. But that was not the argument I was answering. The argument was that having Santiago instead of Nolasco and Berrios instead of Milone and Duffey will make the Twins a better team. Nolasco (4.03 ERA and 1.121 WHIP btw in California) is a better pitcher than Santiago this season, and there is no reason that he will not be the next season. Yes Berrios will improve, but one improved Berrios will not turn this team into a contending team, and you got to figure out Santana's regression And if they do not turn into contenders, they better rebuild instead of wasting the value that Santana or Gibson might have and wasting opportunity cost as well by keeping Santiago around who is a perfect number 5 pitcher in a competing team in a good day and will cost $10m a year. A rebuilding team does not need that.- 254 replies

Article: Penciling A 2017 Starting Rotation
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess having another young pitcher (let's say Gonsalves or Jay) who can learn at the job is more valuable to me than having a tutor; but of course you need a decent pitching coach to do what Santana does. Rebuilding teams need to determine who is part of their future, because they will not compete in 2017 and 2018. Nobody who is not going to be with the Twins in 2019 should be with them in 2017, because of a. losing the opportunity for a decent return in a trade and b. the opportunity cost for someone like Gonsalves or Jay being in the minors...- 254 replies
