  1. Different beasts. And any way you cut it, only Arcia (and The Forgotten Guy) are the only MLB-ready hitters who hit from the left size with power. You need at least one of them in the team, but you are better off with both.
  2. 6'4", 260lb. Just a tad undersized for an elite Tight End. And I suspect that there are a lot of tight ends who can be great outfielders. Or just about right for a quarterback (IIRC Daunte Culpepper was just the same size in his prime.) He'd make a pretty good outfielder. Or a pass rushing defensive end, Jared Allen was about that size, just a bit taller. Speaking about JJ Watt is 290 lbs. Wanna bet that he could be an awful outfielder, if he chose baseball? Let the kid play, see him play and then talk. Funny enough, people wanted to crucify Plouffe because he was horrible at third in his first season. Now they clamoring about his defense. BTW, sub "Koskie" for "Plouffe" out there, and the same stands. Will Sano be a gold glove outfielder in 2016? I don't know, but it is not likely. Could he be in 2018? Of course. If he wants to be. There is 260 lbs and there is 260 lbs.
  3. Both of those are sell high guys, if Ryan has the guts to do it. And Polanco is not a third baseman. Not sure where that silliness came about. He played zero games at third. Never played the position. And he is 5'11" with cleats. Not your prototypical third baseman. That suburban legend has to burn One thing that is not mentioned is that Baseball America had Polanco as the best fielding Twins' SS 4 years ago or so. Guess their eyeballs were different that the eyeballs of his detractors. I think that Polanco will thrive as a SS with consistency, like most middle infielders do, when the SS and the 2B pair is the same for 90% of the games.
  4. No. Those are career AA numbers of Jose Berrios compared to career AA numbers of Ricky Nolasco
  5. What does that mean? Here is an interesting comparison: Player A: 3.25 ERA, 1.255 WHIP, 9.6 K/9, 3.45 K/BB Player B: 3.22 ERA, 1.112 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, 3.33 K/BB Career AA stats. Pretty similar. No? Player B is Berrios. Player A is another current Twin. Care to guess who?
  6. Thing about Peterson is that deceptive deliveries quit fooling hitters when the hitters are looking at the ball instead of the pitcher's glove. And that usually happens at around AA. Peterson had a 1.466 WHIP last season in AA. Would like to see a tad more from him, before I even consider him as a prospect...
  7. Here is the thing. The rule is messed up. It should say: If you slide with your legs first, the legs better be able to reach the base. It is silly to think that one would slide legs first with cleats pointing in the fielder and touch base with the trailing hand and have an advantage in getting that base, other than hurting the fielder Simple.
  8. Well... Told you what I think about that manager. And he could not break a double play, because as you can see the ball is out already... Just a shame all over, because if you look at that picture, you will see Swisher's goal there: Take Nishioka out. Period. At that snapshot the ball was already at the first baseman's glove. No excuses. Glad that Gardy went belly up once more against the Yankees
  9. This, does not apply, if you are out already, as was the case there...
  10. I don't see anything good about it. He was out already. Hard sure. But he should have gotten a hard one on the mouth at next plate appearance.
  11. Um. No. Facts: This is the play. Nishioka just threw the ball and had touched base a while before. Look at Swisher's legs. As I said, the Twins' manager and his players did not have the fortitude to stand up to a dirty slide that pretty much ended Nishioka's career here. Tell me how that is clean, based on the rules announced today. Please.
  12. Absolutely. And I cannot believe that nobody of Nishioka's pitching teammates and his manager had the fortitude to make the perpetrator pay. If it was me, Nick Swisher would be on First base with a new set of teeth on his first PA on every game he faced the Twins.
  13. Nope. Pythagoras said that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the two othogonal sides, about 2300 years before the first baseball game ever played. Bill James said the above and called his formula Pythagorian expectation, for some reason.
  14. Gotta love Souhan. The man who endlessly contradicts himself Starts his writeup with: and ends it with So either, in his mind Korea and Japan are the same place, or Mauer grew up in a different St. Paul than Winfield... I'd love to see comparisons of Park to someone like Tony Batista, for example, because they have more things in common (hint: Park is better than Batista) and quit that Asian thing. And with his last sentence, Souhan really negates the rest of the article.
  15. Based on Bill James' plus/minus system the Twins' OF in 2015 improved 46 runs from that mess of 2014. However, there is an opportunity here. The 2015 OF was -11 runs. I'd really wait to see who plays where and how, before I start dishing the 2016 OF. Sano has the potential to have at least equal range to that of Hunter, which was not that much last season; cannot remember how many balls dropped in front of him... There are a few good defensive centerfielders to chose from (their name is not Santana) and looks like Rosario will be the starter in LF, so there is no drop from last season, but actually a full season of Escobar at SS and not at LF (where he was horrible) will be an improvement. 2 months and a week or so until the opening day. Lots of things to see before come with a conclusion about this one.
  16. Here is one for you: On Friday July 17th the Twins were 50-40, 4 games behind the Royals in the division, with the second best record in the AL, and leading for a wild card spot. On the same day, the Mets were 47-43, 3 games behind the Nationals in their division, the 7th best record in the NL, and 4th in the wild card race, albeit a spot behind the second wild card. a. which team was closer to "winning now"? b. which team made the moves that turned it into a World Series team? c. if they are not the same team, what does this say for the GM of team a?
  17. So what? It is doable and it should be what a team should strive for and make sure that everyone in the organization and outside the organization knows that this is their goal. Season in and season out. Do you get that feeling from the Twins? Or do you get "good enough is ok?" Because if your goal is not to be the best, you will never be the best and settle for good enough... Simple.
  18. Excuses. Tell me about KC; what kind of market are they? Marlins? Diamondbacks?
  19. Love the kid's determination, ranked him number 1 in my prospect list, but his results are much better than his stuff, and this concerns me a bit long term, unlike Meyer whose stuff is better than his results...
  20. I'd take Latos (and a head doctor ) over Milone any day. Gallardo is apparently hurt (or something,) so that's a different story.
  21. You do realize that Escobar had a higher OBP than Dozier, Rozario, Plouffe and a few more last season, right? And what Escobar did as a 22 year old is as relevant for the 2016 Twins as what Mauer did when he hit 28 HRs in the Dome. Career numbers do not extrapolate...
  22. I'd take Hrbie, Bush and Smalley (the last 2 killed RHP) over 2015 Mauer and Rosario any day...
  23. You got Systems - People - Processes. Something must be broken if the last time you met your goal was 24 years ago...
  24. If Suzuki is still going to be the Twins' starting catcher, how does that "improve the catching situation", since it will be pretty much the same. So: Ryan's 2 statements (1.Suzuki will be the starting catcher and 2. The catching situation has improved) are conflicting. Not the first and not the last time... My take is that the will try a. not to hurt Suzuki's ego and b. ease Murphy in by letting him catch a couple of pitchers that Suzuki might have trouble with (let's say Gibson and Duffey - if he makes it), see how his bat plays, she how Suzuki's plays, and take it from there. Not a whole or none proposition here.
