  1. When does Colabello get a look with the Twins? Too bad Morneau is playing so poorly. And Sano... man that kid can hit. How many HR's does he end the year with? At this pace he could hit 40@@!@!#
  2. The MLB draft is starting to get much more interesting.... for a lot of reasons. It is pretty clear in the research Oxtung and I did earlier that elite players come from the first round. Even though these guys don't have instant impacts, it is still fun.
  3. Gibson roughed up. I'm wondering if he will be able to make the transition to the Twins this year. Despite what others have said, there is nothing about his results that lead me to believe he is "close."
  4. Like, just the two of you... or involving a third wheel... if ya know what i mean...
  5. Plouffe has the talent. Hopefully some time off the last week has let him refocus and make some adjustments. He could be a very valuable player for this team going forward... even if Sano can stick at 3b.
  6. At the time the trade was for a MLB SS on a playoff team. Gomez was still a work in progress and everyone knew he had talent. He should have spent a year in AAA when the Twins traded for him, but they wanted the instant gratification from the trade and Span didn't look like he would turn into the player he is. Ultimately, he wouldn't have seen much playing time with Delmon in left and Cuddy/Kubel in right. Gomez-Hardy was a fine trade.... Santana-Gomez was not.
  7. We are in agreement. These are the reasons I was bullish on Greinke this offseason, and felt the Twins should have pulled the trigger with the amount of talent they have coming up. There will always be #3 starters on the market. If history in the playoffs has shown the Twins anything, its that playoff series are difficult to win with a sub-par rotation. Looking forward, in 2015 there are still names on the FA board that would look real nice with the Twins. That will be a more serious run anyway. Lets all just hope they don't sign extensions.
  8. If it was only that year the Twins looked over-matched and under-prepared... Unfortunately, you can keep making excuses for every playoff appearance. This was the 4th playoff series in row he lost, on his way to 6 in a row while getting swept and looking completely helpless in the last 3. Yes, the players need to come through to win. The biggest part of a coach or manager is to have your team prepared. This is where he fails, and the players performance shows it. When this happens over a significant sample, with different players, at some point you have to make a change at the top. I think the time was after the embarrassment of 2010.
  9. Swarzak is in a great role. Like Duensing, he has problems the more times hitters see him because his stuff just isn't that good. He is cost controlled right now and doing well in his role. I had really high hopes for Swarzak when he was coming through the system, at one point he was the top pitcher in the Twins minor leagues. He failed to take the next step in development, similar to what is happening with Hendriks right now (I do still have high hopes for Hendriks).
  10. The problem is the lack of realistic options. Signing guys in FA is generally paying for what they did in their prime and it doesn't equal a good investment. Sometimes it does pay off. Torii played up to his big contract with LAA. Most pitchers sign extensions before hitting FA to avoid the risk of getting injured and having to go through what Scott Baker is now. Its not easy to find good, elite player investments. You can always find guys to plug in a fill a need. I hope a few years down the road there is an elite pitcher under 30 the Twins can sign for big money, but I'm not holding my breath.
  11. I think Gardy is notorious for that. He will push guys and if they can perform he gives them a little more leash, and if they fail he tightens the knot. I have felt that this is his management style. I don't disagree with it all the time, but when you have a chance to win a game against the best team in the division you should probably just try to get that win.
  12. I think our exploration just reinforced what I had previously thought. There is a proven way to get elite starters, you have to draft them in the first round. Considering the Twins have drafted in the 20's since taking Mauer in 2001, they haven't really drafted high profile arms and the evidence is the lack of them in the system. Waldrop in 2004 was a high school pitcher drafted at 25. He was the only HS pitcher drafted in the first round or supplemental round since Dan Serafini in 1992. Wow. Rainville was also drafted out of High School that year. Hudson Boyd was taken in 2011... at #55... pretty far down in the supplemental round. So really, it isn't surprising the Twins haven't had any elite starters... they don't even try to draft them! To get elite starters in the 20's it almost has to be HS pitchers right? There were a few college guys that fell that late in the 1st, but many top college guys like Appel will be gone right away.
  13. Sano and Buxton are still making their case to be the 2 best prospects in the game. If Rosario's defense has really improved that much, I could see him being in the top 50.
  14. So it would cost 53 million extra to get him to sign here? You must be smoking of that stuff the Twins send out. It would be all about dollars. He got 147 million, if they had offered 155 he would be a fool not to take it. Yes, 2013 wouldn't be the best year, but after that he could anchor a perennial contender for the rest of his career. For the life of his contract the Twins will have a better record than the Dodgers, and I don't think it will even be close. It isn't that hard to get FA pitchers, you just have to actually make a financial commitment.
  15. There is risk, but the reward is high too. The Twins have been really safe in their drafting strategy since Adam Johnson, and even he was a college guy that was supposed to be the deal. They compounded that draft by getting "The Real Deal" JD Durbin in the 2nd round. To get elite starting pitching, you have to draft guys that have a chance of getting there.
  16. I've been serious about this for a while. This is why I wanted Greinke so bad! Morneau's money is off the books next season, so they have the flexibility. Guys they could target are Wainwright and Johnson, but I prefer Greinke to both. I would like Wainwright too, but he is on the wrong side of 30 to give a big contract to.
  17. The guys ahead of him have had time in pro-ball to show their talent too. He is my pick at #4 right now.
  18. I think its safe to say he is out of contention to be the Twins draft pick. Too many bad starts to make it up.
  19. Really? I thought his physical tools looked like a guy in AA, or career filler minor leaguer. Shoot, he didn't even hit that well in the minors. If the head-game made that big of an impact.... he rightfully went back to Japan.
  20. /Fail I'm happy for KC, the Twins, and the fans he is performing well. Lets not get carried away and flame for the sake of flaming. He's not going to pitch like this every game, but at least he is showing he is capable of making quality starts. I doubt the wheels will fall off like Ramon Ortiz. I just don't see why people have to be vindictive about a player's performance. Yes, many people were negative about it. Many felt like it was a bad financial commitment for 2 seasons of 5th starter upside. There were in-house options that were cheap whom could fill in a put up similar numbers. Obviously, the sample so far shows KC is giving the Twins their money's worth. It is also early, and hyperventilating about posters wanting the front office to make better decisions.
  21. I have to wonder if Hendriks is purposefully working on something. If I was the Twins, I would be forcing him to pitch out of his comfort zone right now. Results in AAA don't matter anymore for him IMO. He showed last season over a significant sample he can get AAA hitters out pretty easily. Instead of forcing him to pitch and get rocked with the Twins, doing it in AAA is a better way to go.
  22. I think some are overreacting about him not playing for 2 games. Does his thumb hurt? Was he sick? I'm not going to get huffy and puffy until Gardy starts pulling him more frequently. From watching him I actually thought he might benefit from a little time off. Maybe he's pressing and trying to do too much. I'm not a huge fan of how Gardy treats young players, but I'm also not going to get carried away when a guy is struggling and is given a few days to get it back together.
  23. I don't have a problem sitting Plouffe for 2 games like Gardy did. He needs to focus better... not just defense, but offense too. He's not taking great AB's, being lazy with his footwork and just needed a little time off. I still think he will be fine, and giving a guy a few days to get back to the basics isn't a terrible angle.
