  1. Not like I did, too many English degrees spoiled my joy of reading honestly (and my current job is all reading/research and writing). I do consume lots of short-form reading. But books are hard for me to pick up much less get through. The more distance I get from all that schooling (and this particular job), I can see getting into it again.
  2. Something I want to see in the next episode: House Glover gets its comeuppance for abandoning the Starks (again).
  3. As I said, I wish they addressed the position more thoroughly. Parker is doing well. But which players are we even comparing? Romero to who?
  4. People in middle America still read? I kid.
  5. If that cost was borne out by the police union, imagine how quickly the behavior would change.
  6. Are they working out? Without naming names, it's all theoretical: we'll signed the ones that worked out. FA Relievers across the board haven't been great value. (Exhibit A: Addison Reed). I agree the Twins should have addressed the position more thoroughly--perhaps through trade if not FA, but that is easier said than done, and without some skin in the game (naming names), it's wishy-washy criticism.
  7. I largely agree with your post, but surplus value is a benefit of an already good club. Under the conditions of your scenario, the Twins hold onto Pressly (or whoever) until whatever trade value they have is utterly diminished. If the team is not contending, it should seek to deal short-term-controlled assets (1-2 years) before their trade-value is near-zero. The Twins had no way of knowing last year that they'd compete this year (sure they'd hope and plan for, but that was pie in the sky a year ago), so they acted to deal short term assets, regardless of surplus.
  8. I recall hearing that the Whitehouse sued to stop its release, not sure under what grounds or whom they sued or where its at. The Trump Whitehouse is trying to run out the clock on all front by tying up everything in litigation.
  9. Well, the Pirates did pay for one additional year of control (for a total of ~2.3 years of control), and we'd be getting ~1.3-1.5 years of control, so I think the return can be discounted not quite proportionally (~40%), but still significantly (~25-30%). Javier + Lanarch + Duran would be a pretty competitive offer. (And Glasnow's value had been some what muted by his disastrous 2017 and his pedestrian 2018)
  10. Given the state of the 2020 rotation, I'd be fine with that expenditure. Though Lewis/Kiriloff/Graterol are untouchable, but I still think there's enough in the system to get a trade like that done.
  11. It's a question that many people are asking, but at this point we don't know.
  12. As for the rotation, Stroman looks to be a better buy than Bumgardner. And I'd also keep an eye on Archer if the Pirates fall out of contention.
  13. Sure enough, when I checked the standings weren't updated.
  14. In the American League any way!
  15. I was weeping during the knighting. Brienne's incredulity and deep-seated appreciation was so rewarding that I was sure she would die in the most recent episode.
  16. I think it's only after the fact that we can say Obama was "electable." There was plenty of risk with him, his inexperience, his race, his name, etc.
  17. Who were the other choices? Howard Dean? Jerry Brown? I don't even remember.

  19. He was 4 for 4 today with a homer.
  20. I think that's a field too far given that there has been a lot of talk about the Twins instituting new techniques to increase velocity.
  21. Couldn't agree more. I'll keep calling it cynical. Risk-aversion can be a viable model for running, say, a business. But I think it's horrible when applied to politics, i.e. leadership.
