  1. Neat. Really many of the first world countries overlap and the American version seems garishly chosen, but its the sack of grains from Chad and Ecuador that speak to the lesson needed to be learned.
  2. Jim Callis from BA
  3. The deflection for the win. In spite of the modest lip-service, certainly the Twins use of resources speaks otherwise, no?
  4. Was that a reasonable expectation going into the season? That said, trading for Josh Johnson at the deadline and resigning whets my appetitite.
  5. Right, he should have been thrown out to ML hitters when he hadn't proven his dominance at lower levels. Maybe we waste some innings on Gibson's arm, but he's being put in a situation where he's more likely to succeed.
  6. Complete game shut out. Yawn.
  7. I wasn't talking about Grienke himself, but rather whatever star free agent is available in two years. I disagree with your rebuilding method, I think you're likely to have an expensive, ineffective pitcher when your core is hitting its prime.
  8. I think it was important that he was a free agent, so he didn't force his former clubhouse to accept him out of hand. Maybe he is too old, of no use, but that's hardly the common narrative. Even the cynical narrative points to the fact that he had a fiance (/hattip Howard Kurtz) rather than the unlikelihood of his continuing NBA career as the nefarious spearhead to a self-serving admission. Beyond all the gloss and the political proselytizing, there seems to be a convincing admission, which many within the game have real respect, and so very few seem to dismiss as anything less than legitimate.
  9. Such discrete events are beginning to mount up. As I said, keep throwing them out there, but how many at bats do we need to find the results discouraging? Dozier and Parmelee are on the verge of losing significant playing time to Escobar and Arcia. Let's not cut them too much slack, now.
  10. Ain't this the risk of building a ball club around a core of young players? But the conventional wisdom--which seems prudent to me--is when you have a young core of superstar players, build around them!
  11. I already apologized for the presumptuousness of distinguishing real fans from any other kind of fans, in the original thread where I made the mistake. We're all fans, we all fight for what we believe makes our club a better ball club. So give this up.
  12. Really? Why not have a Greinke or Sanchez two years younger, and with two more years data. Why pay for older starting pitchers when your core is under such lengthy team control? You're not convincing me that we're not wasting money through 2013-14, and not overpaying for any seasons there after. There's better investments to be had down the road that can better help a sustained playoff run.
  13. You have to keep throwing all those players out there, maybe save Hicks. There simply aren't alternatives. Hicks might have things to work on at AAA, but it's hard to believe anyone else does. Play them and see what we've got and make decisions in the offseason.
  14. Regardless of the contract, or improvement upon such a need? Nearly all free agent deals are given to players who fill needs, though many of them are outright reckless and do impair future competitiveness. The Twins signed Burton, Doumit and Willingham to FA deals just the previous offseason; the investments they made this offseason, while inexpensive and perplexing don't seem totally awful. More than that, the FOs recent ability to acquire talent from trades, the draft, and rule 5/waiver wire gives a me baseline of optimism. Why wouldn't the FO supplement a competitive core with smart FA signings, when they've gone about their business with such prudence in other areas? I can understand being cheap when maximizing the budget means being competitive for third place, which we're probably competitive for at a our reduced budget, anyway.
  15. While, I agree the Twins are being cheap, I think there's some sense in their cheapness. It's the old diminishing returns argument. If TR spends the full amount of ownership's budget, how much better is the club really? You often hear the it "ain't my money" argument when it comes to spending, which seems pretty silly to me. Grienke and Sanchez would have been nice, but their contracts would have overlapped with the emerging core in such a way that it could hinder that teams competitiveness. I'd rather sign the Grienke and Sanchez two years from now (though such FA signings, even then seem like a pipe dream), and heck, it doesn't really bother me if the ownership benefits in the meantime for being frugal/cheap.
  16. No, not all the same people will say such things. I didn't think spending big in FA to compliment a two-time hundred loss team was a good idea (even if they had money to spend); but I think it's a much better idea to support a young core by spending more, and even taking risks (in terms of salary, not years) in free agency. Yes, the Twins are being cheap, but I don't think it particularly matters now. I hope the make some salary investments (either through FA, trade, or a resigning) to help compliment the emerging young core. Whether the Twins will actually follow through on such an idea remains to be seen, but it's really not so pollyanneish to think the Twins might do something so common-sensical.
  17. An important caveat: prospect analysis/writing really only goes back so far, especially in terms of public access, so it's difficult to really know what people thought of the comparable prospect classes, pre-1990. But pre-hindsight, this group looks pretty dang good. The risk can't really be used against this prospect class, because we're not looking at the actual career production, but rather players-as-prospects. It's nice to dream big about these guys. More than a few star like players, and the depth is stout.
  18. Double AA promotion next month? I can dig it.
  19. He takes the blame when we don't need supposition and twisted narrative to blame him. I think we're being naive that some other manager would have a more successful time with this group.
  20. Look, there's obviously a narrative behind benching and calling out Plouffe that probably is borne out of real facts, real plays, and real negligence (on Plouffe's part). Gardy 'calling out' Plouffe is probably frustration boiling over, where Plouffe damn-well-knows what he should be doing, but does not do it. The likely scenario (rather than the coaching staff being derelict jerks) is that Plouffe blew it. That he should have known better because he's been taught better throughout his playing career, and maybe he was told to anticipate exactly what happened and he failed to do so. I'm honestly not sure why it is easier for so many posters to accept that the management and front office are full of idiotic people, but yet bristle at the notion of a player being stupid, strident, disobedient. It is Plouffe who messed up, and management probably anticipated it, and the dude mucked up anyway, and that's what gets Gardy hot. The alternative reading just defies logic, and plays into the most cynical narrative that fans can possible have. What fun.
  21. May solid if unspectacular with seven innings, three hits, three ks, two walks and one earned run.
  22. Seriously? You're grasping at straws. Do you expect Gardy to go out there and grab Plouffe by the hips to position him before each play?
  23. Here's the draft order without the need of the extra click.
