  1. Let's hope that the twins penchant for low risk moves pays off here. Whether or not these signings work out, it was hard to imagine the Twins spending 75 mil this offseason.
  2. I think this kind of slotting and comparison is foolhardy--you're getting ahead of yourself if you're thinking about playoff matchups. Our rotation should be a lot different by the time the team's young talent emerges, as will other team's rotations.
  3. Just look at that. And that doesn't touch Gibson's or Worley's contribution evidently. Yipes. What gets lost in a lot of aggregates and metrics that try to attribute a comparison value among all players is that replacement level players differ in value greatly from organization to organization. Nolasco's (or any pitcher's) capacity to pitch 180 innings of even zero-value is materially worth more to the Twins in than it would be to other teams, because the next guys down the line have been very, very bad.
  4. DFAing anyone would be a mistake. We'll need all these guys; we're likely to use as many as ten starters for various reasons. Having even mediocre depth at AAA is a boon, whether that be Worley or Diamond, both are worth holding onto, given their past success.
  5. I'm not sure we can judge with any kind of confidence what Baker's performance will be, much less, the likelihood of that performance. The reason the Twins prefer Pelfrey is that he's been healthy more recently and--arguably--has been more effective than his numbers, and improved as the season wore on. Baker would be fine as a buy low candidate, like Santana or Floyd; but all of those guys have serious questions about how many innings they can actually pitch, and that they woudl pitch what little innings they could any better than Pelfrey is a murky proposition at best.
  6. Jeeze, some of you guys are plain greedy. Hughes would be an unexpected boon, and more, the move would demonstrate a fundamental change in how (and how much) the Twins address their detriments.
  7. The Twins plans aren't 'shaping up.' There's only rumor and conjecture at this point. There seems to be a race among some to complain most quickly and loudly about the impending failures of the off season. How many threads do we need like this? Merge.
  8. Until we know the dollar amount, it seems pretty mad-happy to get infuriated about the proposal, especially since the same article admits how far apart they are on the money. I'd rather not have Pelfry back--but the Twins do need five starters, so if Pelfry coming back doesn't get in a way of more legitimate signings, it'd be hardly infuriating.
  9. I wonder if the Twins are waiting to see what happens with Tanaka before making any offers...well, one can dream.
  10. I must say, I am disappointed that I was not notified of the 'hollas' I had received. What's a pimp if he don't know when his peeps come hollarin'?
  11. I want a You're Welcome button.
  12. The internet allows for a much more organic flow of ideas from the margins to the center. In the past media was so much more finite, there were only pages to print, minutes of programming to air, and only so much consumers were willing to pay for such media, and the notion that people would produce such media for free was reserved only for the most cultish and proselytizing among us. That the internet has made it cheap and easy to produce ones own media, allows for non-guaranteed money-making, good ideas to make their way from message board to blog to larger media and so on. In the past, only those articles (tv programs, books) that were thought to appeal to unchanging generic audience would be published. Now, group-think need not diminish what becomes centered and promoted. And more there's sustainable communities for whatever interest any two humans can share made possible by internet's vast reach. Honestly, it's no wonder baseball's embrace of sabermetrics and the growing legitimacy of internet media goes hand and hand. Unpopular ideas that challenge the status quo can more quickly topple traditional forms of thinking due to fluidity and breadth of the internet. People are probably reading more than ever, as it's far more efficient to communicate in writing than it is by voice (much less video). We're getting more analytical too, as we learn to fish through pages of words for the information we seek and find pleasurable.
  13. Well, if the net (of the LHed power benefit/detriment) is insignificant with Arroyo on the roster, it's certainly a negative net without him. Getting players who are benefited by our homepark can only help, no matter how many players who are harmed by our homepark. Though, like many have suggested, what park effect TF actually has is pretty nebulous.
  14. Salty really only hits well from the left side; I'd worry that TF could drain some of that power. I'd honestly like to spend money elsewhere.
  15. The I miss how long can he catch signing. I like it.
  16. What I want to know is who's going to take PJ Walter's starts now that he's signed with KC.
  17. When people label opinions and analysis as facts it does not make them any more legitimate. Fact: It is really, really early in FA. Fact: One team has signed a 'quality' pitcher (Hudson, who is aging and probably not ready for rebuild). (On JJ: Any pitcher on a one year deal can hardly be described as quality). Fact: TR intends to give anyone capable of eating innings a chance to eat them. The guys you mention aren't being counted on. Fact: Two starting pitchers have signed.
  18. How many teams have made moves so far? A handful. This is a ludicrously early judgment. Even if these judgments happen to be right, they will be guesses and gut feelings--not hard-won analysis of actual phenomenon or facts. It's just too bad that some fans take every rumor about bullpen arms getting a chance to start, minor acquisitions of minor starters, and other teams signings of near-broken arms to mean that the Twins don't know what there doing, and at the same time, ignore any rumor that suggests the Twins will have a productive offseason. Too many are seething at the mouth to condemn the team they claim to be a fan of based on the thinnest of indicators. I just don't get it.
  19. Well, the notion that contracts will become more inflated then they had been seems some what mitigated. That any team is eating money in an exchange of players is good sign that prices for contracts shouldn't get too extreme this offseason.
  20. Well, the likeliness-radar obviously needs to realign it's gimbals.
  21. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 10m #mntwins have added Logan Darnell, Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Kennys Vargas to 40-man roster They outrighted BJ Hermansen as well
  22. To be fair to the Twins, JJ did sign for less. Though it might have taken as much as that to get him to Minnesota, if not more. That said, my hopefulness of catching a big fish is still rather muted.
  23. Not facing the DH and pitching in Petco are boons to JJ's potential value; it's likely the Twins never had a legitimate chance. If the Twins want to pay top dollar for JJ after a successful season in San Diego, I imagine they'll be welcome to it.
  24. One year deal guaranteeing 8 mil, with 1.25 mil in incentives at 26 starts. There's also an option for 2015 if Johnson makes fewer than 7 starts (a rather odd provision). The Twins should have been all over this, if they had the opportunity. Let's hope they are on better, more sustainable talent.
  25. Has to be 40-man reasons.
