  1. Wow. I wonder if the Twins kicked in cash. If not (even if they did), this is a coup for trader terry.
  2. Too many are dismissing the good for the perfect.
  3. Having too many deserving starters and not enough innings would be a lovely predicament for the Twins. One they haven't had in probably a decade.
  4. The criticisms levied here against the Twins earnings and their spending can be used against every team. Ostensibly, every club should be able to sign any free agent, if they are willing to pocket less money. Though, there's clearly a diminishing return in terms of how much more money a club will earn in the future (or this season) by spending more money now. As others have stated, signing Grienke probably wouldn't have put many more butts in the seat, nor improved the club above it's battle for fourth place.
  5. I needed to get rid of my catchers glut, as they will just continue to decrease in value as teams address their needs; that I got a semiproductive regular out of the deal is fine with me. Though Johnson's BABIP is insane, but still he's better than what I have on the roster. Part of the reason I can get trades done is that I take the time to look at the rosters and try to trade with teams that I match up well. Some guys are impossible to trade with as they insist on having the clear upper hand, even dismissing trades that clearly would be to their benefit. I also have to say, auctioning off players is bad form.
  6. Let's also acknowledge that the Twins arsenal of replacement pitchers is far below what ever median value "replacement level" actually is. Pitchers that get paid above serfdom, I think, are by definition are above replacement.
  7. Part of the Twins gamble (and I don't know that I approve the deal) is that even if they lose on their bet they still get something of value particularly to the Twins (non-totally awful pitching); so in that sense, with the extra money to spend, a gamble where you obtain something of value even when you lose and potentially something of great value when you win is a good bet. Another risk, of course, is the notion that Pelfrey will keep a better pitcher out of the rotation either now or in the future because of his contract. Unless you're completely sold on both Deduno and Gibson, I'm not sure that's going to be the case for the early part of this season, and undoubtedly we'll see a number of pitchers more undesirable than Pelfrey take the mound whether the Twins sign him or not.
  8. With this kind of fact-based analysis, you're right to point out that only fools would disagree with you.
  9. This is an absurd standard to set. If I didn't know you were serious, the statement on itself would appear overtly sarcastic.
  10. I don't disagree, and maybe it's too much gamesmanship on my part, but I'd rather see two years of the guys we have questions about (Deduno/Worley/Diamond/Gibson and soon others) than two years of Pelfrey. If we're going to give up on some of our young pitchers, I'd rather the upgrade be much more significant than Pelfrey (though the choice is probably more complicated than just that). As I said in another thread, I'm not sure what Pelfrey can be holding out for other than a higher AAV one-year deal, hoping to get paid in 2014...
  11. The choice between Pelfrey and Garza seems like a false one to me. That said, what the heck is Pelfrey holding out for? He can't really expect do much better than that; unless he wants to make good on a year offer with a higher AAV. I wouldn't mind Pelfrey back, but the deal no longer seems team friendly, and the longer he isn't signed the more unlikely I think he'll come back. The public flirtation with Garza is pretty fascinating. If given the opportunity, I think they could be players on Tanaka. I hope the Twins won't sign anyone until Tanaka gets posted.
  12. I like these kinds of discussion. One of the problems I've had with criticism of the Front Office is the assumption that we are all working from the same data. While data is already finite, each of our access to that data is even more limited. Simply put, the Twins FO has more data to work with than we do. From medical reports to their own scouting reports to pay-for-data services, there's so much more information available to the Twins to make discerning moves (whether they discern appropriately, well, that's up for debate, and such judgments usually come with only hindsight). To answer the question of why not spend last year, I think is two fold, and John approached these. 1) the Twins didn't like the pitchers available last year at the prices the market set 2) it was one more year removed from what help would come from the minors. To answer the question of why spend this year: 1) we were unthinkably awful again last year 2) our young talent on the ML roster fell flat on their face 3) the minor league system looks like it might produce impact players sooner than expected. In both these instances, I think the budget played a limited role in their thinking.
  13. All three prospects I gave up, I have big questions about. Between Trumbo, Goldschidmt, and Prado I don't think Davidson has a future in AZ (and I don't like his Ks). Berrios is so far away that I felt it was worth the risk. We'll see.
  14. Made some big trades today. I'm sure you guys will have mixed reviews. Soler and Michael Saunders for Josh Hamilton and Rio Ruiz. Matt Davidson, Berrios, Schoop for Bucholz. Lots of risk, but I've decided I can't keep waiting for players to develop and I need to gain some proven production, even with injury and age risk. Soler (who I drafted twice!) and Berrios (who I got with the pick for Scott Diamond (thanks waiver wire, thanks Dave) are the only prospects I'm disappointed to lose, and Ruiz is nice wild card bat.
  15. Wolfson reports the Twins are willing to commit multiple years to the 33 year-old outfielder. - Meh.
  16. I bet they didn't think of it.
  17. Willingham for Anderson straight up is pretty interesting, as Shane suggests, throw in a 'spec to get it done.
  18. Bravo, jake.
  19. On what do you base that much value? Cuz that's a lot to give up, for such a risk and such a price. The pedigree doesn't seem thaaat good. Curious, not nitpicky.
  20. Glad you guys like it as much as I do. Sometimes I like deals so much that I start to feel stupid. I think I got three guys at their lowest value, and they are mostly buy-low for a lot of the wrong reasons. I bet Mauer outproduces Davis (esp. in a Otteneau league, my hasty evaluation). That the Tigers dealt Fister so cheaply must have worked in my favor. Schoop is just gravy as second round minor league picks aren't ever worth as much as we think they might be. That said, I'm heavy at in the MI, C, and even 1B. Make me some offers. Hey, Ben, I didn't know you had actually joined! I think it's great.
  21. Made a big trade today w Billy Buck, Chris Davis and a 2nd round pick for Mauer, Fister, and Schoop. Thoughts?
  22. The Twins should definitely inquire about Franklin or Miller. Not sure about Franklin's defense. I wonder if Willingham could make it happen.
  23. I bet he won't age nearly as well as Lofton did, who stayed very productive (and very journeyed) until his late 30s. As great as Lofton was, there's a reason he received so many one year contracts in his thirties; players with his skill set hadn't aged as well as Lofton atypically did.
  24. Orders of magnitude? The A's have had the same playoff futility as the Twins over nearly the same period of time. The A's lost more than 85 games three seasons in a row (just four years ago), and it's only fair to saddle two of the losing season at TR's feet (if even that). It's unfair to conflate the BS years with TR. You might argue that the Beane has been better (but not significantly so) than TR, but to suggest that hte difference is in the 'orders of magnitude' is an blatant exaggeration.
