  1. Drafted out of college, moved up a level each year, and hit pretty well at each stop. AA/AAA next year; with a possibility of a debut at age 24/25.
  2. This is a steal. Power and speed. Palka showed up on BA's hotsheet several times this season. And he's left-handed.
  3. Others have suggested that Park's signing is a prelude to further moves. I think your math suggests likewise. Having any of the five you listed (outside of Arcia, anyway) on the bench would be waste -- the Twins know that. They also probably know that Plouffe really won't fetch much. Rosario, Kepler, Hicks are much worthier trade assets, perhaps (I hope) in pursuit of a top of the rotation starter.
  4. If we want something of value, we have to give up something of value. Plouffe won't net much, if anything. (Not good enough for contenders to deal for, too expensive for rebuilders). Rosario/Kepler/Hicks would be traded NOT to make room for Plouffe, but because they could obtain a far more valuable piece in exchange. If we ever want to acquire an actual Ace, we'll have to give up valuable assets, having Plouffe in the fold enables the Twins to make such a trade without affecting the on field performance of the team in the near future.
  5. Likability should be very low on people's consideration of what makes a person qualified to be President. Whether or not I want to have beer with Hillary is totally irrelevant to the job she's seeking. The general election polls at this point are trash. A very small portion of the voting populace is paying enough attention to predict how they will vote a year from now. As you suggest, the poll more accurate measures which candidates people like more.
  6. Jesus this team is ruining its lottery chances already.
  7. I'd like to see a non-strikeout prone player sandwiched in between, honestly.
  8. I think that coalition is more sizable than you let on. The question is whether those people actually go to vote. My worry is that the economy continues to recover, and the voting populace goes into a complacent slumber.
  9. Pirates are likely to non-tender Alvarez. The Brewers picked up Adam Lind's option, though are said to be actively moving him. I wouldn't count the White Sox out either. If the Twins win, it's an indictment of Vargas and Arcia for sure. It also diminishes their leverage in any Plouffe talks. That said, it'd be rad for the Twins to be bold.
  10. I think Clinton crushes who ever the GOP nominates. I think you're simply out of touch with the facts on the ground if you're skeptical of the odd year, and non-presidential elections rationale for low democratic turnout. My intent with my post was not to defend Democratic campaigns, but to answer your question of why Dems perform so poorly in such elections. Incompetence might be part of the reason, but if that's the only rationale you'll accept, well, I'm not sure why you asked the question.
  11. Well, what exactly overcomes the indifference to odd year elections? Do really think there's a Democratic equivalent to the tea party's anger that could rabble up a voting majority? Isn't that--at best--Bernie Sanders? Local politics just don't turn on issues that motivate the youth or necessarily speak to liberal rallying cries. (The marijuana monopoly bill aside). It would take tremendous amounts of financing and organization to really outshine the Republican network of radio, people with time and money, etc. I can't imagine there's much potential to raise local dollars, either.
  12. Business is about efficiency. The government should be about efficacy. If the government is doing the job, the market has not provided a private firm to do the job efficiently. The goals of providing education, safety, welfare are only akin to business in terms of their need for institutionality, not in terms of their purposes or structures. If the problem could have been solved with the mind of businessman, the market would have provided the solution. To elect a businessman is likely to ignore the problem altogether. Such problems--poverty, foreign affairs, defense, crime, wages--cannot/has not been solved as yet by the market. I just think the values of being the executive of the government must necessarily differ from those of a business executive. There are many problems that cannot be solved by the compulsion towards profit/efficiency.
  13. An interesting survey from Politico of 45 US mayors (they list which ones at the end of the survey), there's diversity in their selection, but whether it's representative of the entire country is hard to say. In any case, I found their findings rather relevant. Nearly ninety percent of those surveyed suggested Congress is not doing enough on gun control. As the survey suggests, as population increases in geographical density, the gun control problem becomes more stark. But that has little relevance to those living in rural America. It's hard to protect the privileges of country folk, while maintaining the gun control America's mayors would have.
  14. Aberration is the new mean.
  15. RIP Flip. A real shame he didn't get to bear the fruit of his labors with this young team.
  16. Good. I'll be tuning in; honestly, I'm a bit surprised in my interest in the playoffs this year.
  17. So how many people watched the debate? "Nielsen reported Wednesday afternoon that 15.3 million viewers — the sixth-biggest nonsports cable telecast in history" Holy crap.
  18. To be fair, Chuck hurt plenty of people himself by throwing things.
  19. Stay classy, Canada.
  20. Aliens are in the midst of building a dyson sphere, obviously.
  21. You're right to be cynical. I'd say it was more arrogance than incompetence. (Two sides of the same coin?) In any case, I just don't see the upside of the private server for Clinton without evidence of any actual wrong doing through that server. If Clinton were doing side-deals and wanted to insulate herself, there'd be evidence of that through which ever relays the emails needed to pass through to reach their destination. I do imagine, however, there is some diplomacy that needs to happen through unofficial channels. However, a private email account probably isn't the best way to conduct that given the footprint electronic correspondence leaves, and the signal that having a private server sends. (All this said, I'm speculating, and am neither super tech-savvy or diplomacy-savvy).
  22. I think the Clinton email thing demonstrates irresponsibility, but nothing more; I think it's a sign of Hillary being behind the times in terms of security risks of a private email account, and myopic about how using a private account to do the State's business would look. She blew it, but there hasn't even been alleged harm. I guess I just like Bernie decrying the absurdity of an economic system that creates more upward mobility for millionaires to move into the billionaire class than it does for lower and middle class to even tread water.
  23. What ideas of Bernie's seem so incredibly intransigent? (This question is for Dave too). I do agree Bernie was stumping more than engaging the questions, but I didn't find anything he said akin to Trump's rhetoric or ideas. Clinton did come off utterly competent. I especially like when she said, "I'm progressive, but I'm a progressive who likes to get things done."
  24. Yes. Though I'd try to get Gibson (or May) included instead of Berrios, even adding a third player.
