    If the batter doesn't hit the ball........ it doesn't matter what defense is behind the pitcher. Nolasco's whole career is a sad story of selected stats used for making the case that "he should be better than he actually did." Except he just never was. I hope this year he actually does better than the specialty stats show he should have. Way better. Trade actual performance for virtual analysis. And get rid of that persistent crotch itch. Maybe that will help. And let me add my thanks and kudos for the fine article.

    When you get lit up for a .316 average against (and it was even worse most of the season), things can get out of hand quickly, and did. Nolasco makes the whole league a .316 hitter. That is scary.

    Laudner gave him the Papelbon grab the junk gesture instead - an offense that didn't get you suspended then. Or maybe he didn't mean it that way? Another question.

    Reading all this made me feel like I was being forced to watch The View. Oh, the drama. I like all the walks, though. And the return to the lineup on Wednesday with a homer and 2 RBI. And "Vargas’ personality and/or attitude have not been issues with the Twins and he is well-respected in Puerto Rico where he recently was honored in December by the Sports Journalists Association of Puerto Rico as the best major league player from the island in 2014." Sometimes managers need to get tutored by Phil Jackson.

    I would put Meyer at number 3, leave Berrios at 4, and Burdi at number 5 for my top 5. I always think far too much importance is given to first round picks even though they are years away from the show..... years to fail just as much as years to develop, and history shows way more fail or wash out with injuries than develop. When a prospect is within a season of the show in their development, they become a much more important prospect, have less opportunity to wash out in the minors, and have a much higher value in my opinion. Both Stewart and Gordon still fall in that strata.

    Wasn't Stauffer not only the 3 pick in 2003, but also became the #1 prospect in all of baseball? Those top prospects......... they can paralyze you with hope. Waiting for Sano. Isn't that a play by Samuel Beckett?

    Maybe I should wait to see #'s 1-10 before I say this, but I can't imagine, with this list so far, that Mitch Garver will be one of the first 10. Mitch gets no love. I think he will be the next star starting catcher, and Turner a Drew Butera. He didn't win the Johnny Bench award, but was a finalist with Turner winning, and he crushes at the plate. I sure hope Thorpe is a rarity and can pitch to his best capability with his injury. I also hope that Ervin Santana makes it through his contract with his. With an injury like that, I personally can't see more than one year contracts. (I hope we don't lose him for 2 of the 4 years.)

    All I have to do is take a look at the Nolasco contract (and the Santana contract for that matter) to love love love this one. I always hate to see the players that had the best years get paid less than the ones that didn't, regardless of the agreeements. This is some justice.

    Mientkiewicz is in the perfect spot for him in this organization after not being named manager of the Twins. I have never been a Jeff Smith fan with his seemingly buying into the Bobby Knight school of treatment of players, and would prefer that he is not retained at all. The AA team and players is were the best prospects can jump to The Show from, what with AAA many times being a place to stash replacement players and prospects that aren't necessarily the top prospects in baseball, but can eventually fulfill a roll, or that just need more time and seasoning or they are being blocked on the big league team by someone. Getting Quade for the AAA team is an upgrade over Glynn, in my opinion, and I hope Mientkiewicz to the Twins happens sooner than later, but am satisfied where he is right now. I hope it is Mientkiewicz that takes this team to the next World Series victory, and he rises to the top with the ones he has been coaching through the levels. I wish Molitor much success, but hope he doesn't hang around too long.

    I sure hope we see Nick Burdi and Jake Reed before we see Graham in the pen. My bet is a trade will happen when he doesn't come close to making the team, or he will be returned.

    Does anyone know if there is any truth to the story that Santana has been pitching with a partially torn UCL for the last couple of years? Healed or not?

    I like the Pirates' left handed Liriano (3 years/39 mil and a dominator when coaches let him pitch) and the Cubs' Hamels (2 years /20 mil) signings way better than this signing. I don't care about the money. Pohlads can spend whenever they want to (they just haven't wanted to according to past actions). I like the years way better. Time will tell. Maybe, unlike what most armchair managers spout, Santana will get better or remain the same as he starts next year at 32 years of age, instead of get worse fast.

    Nice breakdown. 32-35 year old seasons coming up. 36 with the option. Looks like the twins will have to score at least 5 runs to win games he pitches while he is eating innings. I think we will see a lot of hits given up, and balls in play. I can't help but think that the Nolasco and Santana signings could have been one Ace instead of two mediocre innings eaters. Here's to Santana performing like 2013 and not 2012, and suffering the Nolasco effect.

    Another right hander that pitches to a mediocre 4 something ERA. And 4 years. I didn't like the Nolasco signing and I don't really like this one that much. 4 years. I love that Ryan is finally really spending some money that has been hoarded for the last 3 years, though. Maybe this one turns out better than Nolasco. I sure hope so. Personally, I was ready to see Meyer and May.

    I embrace the analysis and the sabermatic approach to assembling a ball club. I didn't imply anything. I know that I am not self important because I can understand and toss around stats. And I am not implying anything by saying that either. I am one that likes to talk and write about it, but can't play the game now. I enjoy the analysis, and don't win or lose any ballgames, but I will pretty much always have an opinion about it.

    People who can play the game, play. People that can't, but perhaps once did or just love it and watch it, write about it. Nobody who ever writes about it - including those who collect and analyze stats, wins a ballgame. It sure is fun though.

    I am amazed that people feel the bullpen is an asset now. The quicker Burdi and Reed are in the mix, the better. Pelfrey should be moved to the pen, and traded as soon as possible if he does well (because I totally think it will be a smoke screen.) May and Meyer to the Rotation out of the gate. Meyer was babied enough last year. Time to get on with it. The rest of the potential starters are filler only in case of injury. Berrios could be there sooner than many think. Huge concerns about Perkins and Fien and Nolasco. I hope Perkins knows that he became a chub, and gets in shape and stays in shape. I think that was his biggest problem last year, manifesting in the horrible fade at the end of the year. I hate to see the young pitchers blocked for Pelfrey types, or the proverbial serviceable innings eater....... (especially when they only last 5 innings). I do like TJ comebacks, Anderson and Medlin, as free agent risks. I would love to see Bourjos added. I feel a big year coming on for him if he gets to play regularly, both at the plate and in the field...... and we will need his defense, badly.

    I didn't mean to imply a Koufax to Correia comparison. I am sorry if that is how you took it. I did mention Meyer, Berrios, and Stewart. I believe Gibson is still formulating, too. I do believe magic can happen, and pitchers can get better, especially when they are just coming on. I didn't mention Nolasco or Pelfrey either. I think things are changing. I agree that Ryan has made some horrible choices with misguided hopes and strategy. If the bats miss the ball more, a lot of good things can happen. Perhaps even.... some magic.

    Wasn't Willingham signed to play right field, announced that he would play right field, and ended up back in left? A lot can happen before the season starts (including players that are dealt or dealt for or don't make the team) and even more can happen with injuries and replacements during the season. I am getting more and more comfortable with Hunter returning, and realistically, I need to because I am a Twins' fan.

    Didn't Randy Johnson magically become Randy Johnson? Phil Hughes magically became Phil Hughes last year (at least, for last year.........). Alex Meyer could magically become Alex Meyer, too, even if he does take a couple years to get there. So could Berrios, and Stewart. Some of our pitchers really could do it, especially if management would just let them pitch in the show before they are over 25 or 26. Even Sandy Koufax magically became Sandy Koufax, but it took him a few years.

    Well, the "Twins' Way" certainly hasn't swiffered the nation, or the game. It certainly isn't a phenomenon like the "West Coast Offense". This move could be great, or it could be a great disappointment. As much as I loved Torii in his days on the Twins, I hope I am surprised and this turns out good. It is what Molitor wanted, if you can believe the media reports. Is Johan Santana next?
