    With his history Morneau will be very lucky to get a Willingham type contract next winter, imo. If he has any health issues he may be looking at a 1 year deal. Just doesn't make sense to stick a lot of money in a guy that can't stay on the field. He is 32 in May and next year any new contract will be for his 33 yr old and on years.

    In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. Spiro T. Agnew Good job Howard staying in the long line of nattering nabobs! That is meant to be a compliment.

    Troy Glaus was very close in size, he was 6' 5" and a big guy that played 3rd for a long time. Leave him there until he proves that he must be moved.

    TR has stated in the last week that he fully expects to compete and be a contender into the fall. He clearly either thinks 20m of payroll in hand isn't needed to field a quality team or he thinks we might all have our stocking caps pulled firmly down over our eyes and will continue to buy tickets and hot dogs no matter how bad they may be.

    TR was right to not spend anymore money how could he find any players on the market that could break into this roster?

    They have a state of the art money making stadium and have for the past 2 years given us one of the worst teams in baseball to watch. Spending another 15-20m has to make the team better on the field. If TR can't find the players to make us better with that kind of money in hand he needs to find another job. Next year the payroll will likely be down around 70m, very sad. We as fans deserve better!!

    He'll be 34 when the season starts coming off by far his best year. Chances are he won't come close to last year but lets hope he isn't far off.

    This was from Ryan in the Mackey story; " We think we have a pretty good lineup one through nine, so I can tell you our expectations are to compete and to contend." This would tell me that Ryan feels he has done his job and now it's up to Gardy to deliver!

    As a best case a great catcher gives you 3-4 wins a year? Assuming Butera is a great catcher and he will likely catch 40 games so at best his defense will add 1 win. His bat being close to the worst in all of baseball will surely be a negative and probably enough to cancel anything added by his defensive greatness. Now the problem comes with the other 120 game he takes up a spot on the bench. He has no value at all during this these games and actually takes a spot that a more all around and productive player could take. This year with the inter league games spread out over the entire season it gets worse. Now the ptichers will need to be pinch hit for all year and not just bunched together. So now who is your pinch hitter? Sure you have the would be DH for one a bat but when the pitchers only go 6 innings it is likely that you'll need at least two pinch hitters a game. There is the problem as I see it he is a basic wash at best during the 40 or so games he plays but during the 120 or so he sits on the bench he is worthless. Can a team with limited talent afford that? IMO no.

    The estimate is that 40 million people play baseball in the US at all levels and Major League teams carry 750 on their active rosters. Being one of those 750 even for a cup of coffee means you are a very good player. My question would be how many homeruns did you hit in the majors?

    Clearly people that write these kinds of things have no idea how hard it is to make it through the minor leauges to play "at the major league level" and how good as a baseball player you need to be.

    He'd make the team better so I'm for it. If they can give Corriea 2 years they can give Saunders 3, imo.

    Either of these guys would likely make the team better for not a lot of money. They also have the chance of being trade bait in July. If the point is not to put the best team on the field why have Willingham, Doumit and Morneau on the team? If it's about letting young guys play trade these guys and let all the young guys play.

    It will be telling what happens with the 2 young guys from Cuba. They have plenty of money by any account, perhaps the greatest Cuban player of all time on the staff and a great need for good young players. So what happens? 1) We couldn't give our money away. 2) Tony O was busy and nobody else understands Cuban. 3) We felt no need to upgrade at shortstop with all the quality prospects there. 4) Jim is buying another car dealership and needs the money. 5) We are all surprised and TR makes the kind of signing that BS actually was good at.

    "Spend money just to spend money?" I'm not sure anyone has ever said that. Spending money to make the team better when the money is there is what a good gm does. We know they don't roll the unused payroll into future years so don't you owe the fans the best team you can afford to field? Sitting on a bunch of payroll dollars and not giving the fans the best possible team to watch and support is simply BS!
