  1. The way I see your post is there are more than two options than simply A)rebuilding and B)Trying to compete. There are blurred lines you are seeing right past. Signing some starting pitchers this year doesn't exactly tell me "YES, THIS IS THE YEAR!" They are multiple year deals for each player. I see it as simply a stepping stone in the building process. They have young players up this year, they have younger players stepping on the horizon and they have veterans on the team holding down starting positions. It's all a process towards building a winner. The problem is too many people want to win and want to win now instead of going through the process, and unfortunately it rarely works that way.
  2. Were you not around for the whole Ramos trade debacle? Everyone knew Mauer's time at catcher was limited. Butera was the backup with no options in site. Catcher depth was a frequent topic. I don't think that many people saw Pinto as the the next everyday catcher before last season.
  3. This urban legend just won't die.
  4. Why are so many people not happy with this signing? Look deeper than W-L and ERA folks. He had a FIP of 4.50, while which wasn't good, but was almost a run lower than his ERA. He also performed MUCH, MUCH better outside the bandbox that is Yankee stadium. Let's not forget the division he pitched in. Home: 6.32 ERA, 22 2B, 17 HR Road: 3.88 ERA, 16 2B, 7 HR Move him to Target Field with a better defensive team, I love this signing. I like it more than Nolasco even.
  5. This is by far the most intelligent post on this thread. Why is everyone in such a hurry? I don't like losing as much as the next guy but there is a plethora of talent in the A-AA department, they just need time. Like frightwig said, did any of you watch Arcia and Hicks this year? Did they look ready to step out and dominate? I hope the Twins wait, I want to see Sano, Buxton, Rosario and co. up when they are ready. Does that mean a year or two of losing baseball? Quite possibly. Why rush them? And those of you who posted, "bring them all up and let's just give them all big deals, who cares about money".....really? I honestly don't know what people expected this season. A team with few offensive weapons, a staff that's made up of cheap FA's and back of the rotation pieces. So many ideas of they should have spent so much on FA1 or FA2, but why? To make the team a little bit better? Play it out, Play it out, test out the pieces that look done and let the rest marinate until done. I'll put up with a few losing seasons if the kids are anywhere close to be as good as their projections.
  6. 2011 was the perfect storm and we ALL know it here. There were so many injuries that looking back it was almost comical. What teams loses 2 former MVP players for the season? Not to mention only 3 position players played more than 100 games that year. Not to mention that Butera got almost 300 AB and the complete crapfest that was Nishioka. I hate losing too, it sucks, but there's more potential for this team that they have had in a long time. I would much rather take another losing summer than a couple of haphazard trades to help the team with 5-7 more games in September, get a worse draft pick and trade off prospects to make it happen.
  7. So if all the team's underachievers turn it around and the team sneaks back into the hunt, what does that mean? The team does not have the players to win this year. Worst case scenerio IMO, is if this team does go on a run and finds them to be buyers at the deadline. It will put them in that position where they won't deal players they should and hopefully not trade for players it shouldn't. If they trade for players it will only push back the timeline that this team can really compete, at least in my mind.
  8. Yes, you sign players to win games, but come on a good GM knows if their team is good enough to compete or not. While I am happy with what level the team is playing out this year, they are no where near a team that is ready to compete. All of those guys you listed were guys brought in to fill holes for now or serve as place markers for others until they get here. Do you think the Twins really brought in Correia and Pelfrey this year to push them over the hump to win it all? No, they brought them in because they were fairly cheap usable options that will fill holes, and might have future value if they play their cards right. Most teams aren't the Yankees, Dodgers and BoSox where they can just decide on a whim they want to go for it this year.
  9. Do you have proof or statistics that say there have been more injuries to pitchers on pitch limits or innings limits for young pitchers?
  10. I really hope that KC is traded at the deadline for something and not slotted into the rotation next season.
  11. In this day and age in baseball with such good bullpens and use of specialty guys, I have no problem when the starters are pulled after 100-110 pitches or so. If you have an ace type pitcher I believe there should be a completely different mentality, but there is not one pitcher on this roster I would trust more going beyond 100-110 pitches than the bullpen arms the team currently has right now.
  12. If the Twins can get a B prospect for him there's is no reason they should not trade him. Yes, it's true he has been the most consistent starter for the Twins this year, yes it's also true he will be 33 next month and is pitching better than anyone thought he would when they signed him in the off season. Take a page out of Billy Beane's book. Sign veteran in off season, deal at deadline for prospect, repeat.
  13. Is this a parody account? Are we all being punk'd? OK, where are the cameras??
  14. I didn't propose trading Gibson and Meyer, I said the Twins are leaning on them as future members of the Starting Pitching staff. Gibson is 25 and has just over 100 innings under his belt after having Tommy John surgery. To say because they aren't using him now has no precedence on what they think of him in the future. I disagree with you that you need to gamble from all possible sources to acquire pitching talent. I believe there is a time and place for that, and going into this season the Twins were not in position to add a big money SP on the wrong side of 30, especially for top young prospects, at least in my opinion.
  15. If Correia isn't dealt at the deadline I would be honestly very surprised. If he isn't I would hope that the Twins tried their hardest and couldn't find a taker. I think they could grab a prospect or two from a handful of NL teams looking for an upgrade at the backend of their bullpen.
  16. Trading valuable pieces, let's go with Brock's version of Sano + Gibson, for Shields now, then giving him a giant contract to stay through his 32-37 years (generally a pitchers gradual downfall years) just makes no sense to me. If Shields was 25 or 26 this would be a different story for me, at his age, contract status once Myers was on the table there was no chance he was coming here. You don't think trading of Span and Revere weren't moves to set up the future? For all we know Carroll, Willingham, Doumit, Correia, Morneau and Burton might all be dealt for future players at the deadline. Name one franchise out there who is stacked at every position in the minors? It just doesn't happen. I understand how prospects are just prospects and not a sure thing, but saying the Twins don't have any SP is just crazy. Gibson and Meyer are two very good pieces that I am guessing the Twins are counting on heavily for the future.
  17. While I agree with you that quality starting pitching wins games and gets teams to the playoffs what good what it have done trading the Twins best prospect, someone who projects as a future cornerstone, for a 31 year old SP entering the last year of his deal? Would Shields have helped the Twins propel to the playoffs this year? Not only is Brock right about this whole board being outraged it's one of those moves that makes no sense. I couldn't believe KC even took a serious look at that deal besides actually making the trade. The Twins are set up beautifully for the future and I don't know why more people can't see that it might take another 85-90 loss to season to be worth what will be here in 2-3 years. By the time the loaded farm club is up at the big leagues there should be plenty of money out there to pick up a FA pitcher or make a trade for one. Wasting your valuable pieces and overpaying for players IS NOT how you win in the long run.
  18. How many signable guys have a ceiling of potential ace or top of the rotation starter at this point? If he ends up being a league average starter you would have to assume the pick was a success in the long run.
  19. Stanek falling that far is pretty crazy, too bad he didn't fall another 10 picks, would have been an awesome surprise 2nd rounder.
  20. I think all he meant was what you pretty much proved in your article. Other than Mauer it's very rare that a guy sees the pros in less than 4 years since being drafted. That only means that using the last 4-5 draft classes becomes unreasonable.
  21. Before his shutout on the 8th he hadn't exactly been lighting the world on fire in AAA. Now that he has thrown efficient shut outs in 2 of his last 3 starts RIGHT NOW is probably the time where calling up him is seen as the probable action. I really don't think it's a situation where he has dominated all season in AAA and been ignored.
  22. As per ESPN.... Mauer was held out of Friday's lineup against the Red Sox due to back stiffness, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Spin: As a result, consider him day-to-day. Ryan Doumit is catching Friday for the Twins, while Chris Parmelee is moving up to the No. 2 spot in the Minnesota batting order. News to me.
  23. Did Joe just swing at the first pitch?!
  24. It took me a minute to why you were using the generic KC to describe Santana's pitch location......didn't dawn on me you might be talking about Correia.
