  1. Never ever claimed no free agents would sign with mid sized pmarket losing teams, only top tier free agents wouldn't. Sanchez used the Cubs to get the deal out of Detroit.
  2. Damn lies and statistics Chief. They will have you believe a player is better than what he is and worth 14 million a year.
  3. It would also assume that by adding a front line pitcher and CF the Twins would would still be a poor team and thus selling at the trade deadline. By adding the players and being in contention the fans would be in an uproar if they were traded for the future. If the Twins would not be in contention with adding these two then the conversations about the Twins being cheap is moot.
  4. One example for you, two for me. Only 6 of the 27 championships have come in the last 50 years. TBuying players does not win you championships.
  5. The original fire sale was not by the Loria group. There was no sell off after the second championship and the team was competitive for a few years. They made a trade of Lee for someone who didn't have a long career. Most of the times you hear of other team's competitive bids is when it is used to jack a price up when somewhere else when negotiations are stalling.
  6. No need for personal insults,
  7. Detroit has fielded a far better team than Chicago in far less of a zoo for an an environment. Suburban life in Detroit cannot be much different than suburban life anywhere else.
  8. Yet the Cubs are proof that spending money does not win championships. See also the Mets.
  9. Torri Huntrer signed the second largest contract behind Alex Rodriguez. Had he signed the Twins offer he would have signed the second largest per year contract handed out. You had Morneau coming off a MVP season, Liriano pre Tommy John looked like he was going to be a dominant pitcher. . So in 2010 with no long term deals you have a choice between an MVP power hitter, potentially a staff ace, and an aging player. Hindsight is so easy. Santana had publicly stated long before negotiations started that he wanted to play somewhere else. Had the Twins made a better trade you wouldn't be complaining. The Santana contract has them paying about8 million per WAR, way overpriced.
  10. It is a theory based on where people sign. There is plenty of evidence out there by watching where past players have signed. What do you have that proves it wrong in recent history?
  11. Very bad analogy. Does absolutely nothing to refute my point that the Twins could have started discussions and were told no way. Not many offers or discussions are made public. Puhols turned down more money from Miami in a public discussion. Why have the major free agents all gone to winning teams the last six years? Absence of signing by the Twins is not proof of absence of discussions. Would you go to work for an outfit that offered you little chance of team success if you had an option? You already have more money than you will ever need regardless of where you sign. I think not.
  12. The early quotes was that they were going to be aggressive this off season. Jackson and others looking at the supporting cast could have said no thank you. Remember also the quote that Ryan said they couldn't give money away. The deals made should make the Twins better down the road but for 2013 the Twins would remain a last choice option.
  13. Can't spend money when they don't sign. Players do sign with the Cubs, a historically bad team with the belief there are better days ahead (see what their collection of free agents did in 2008) Players sign with mid market teams that are playing well. The Cardinals are in a similar market with about similar revenue and payroll have been able to sign free agents. Do free agents go for the top money? Pujhols was offered 275 million and he turned Miami down. I bring him up because the Twins did have an offer out to Mark Buerhle. What they offered him in three years was more than the first three years of the current contract he signed. It was that 4th year that made the contract. Twins might have given him the no trade clause, something he reportedly wished he had now.
  14. There is a reason many of these are former closers. Brandon Lyon had his best year last year, but was he worth what he was paid?
  15. The point was TOP free agents. I asked you to show me one TOP free agent that has ever signed with a team that is as bad as the Twins the last two years. As of yet you have not done so. Going back 7 years on the ESPN tracker I cannot find a top mlb ready free agent in the top 20 to have signed with a bad team other than Willingham who was rated at 17th best free agent. Passan had him rated at 23.
  16. Thank you for the rare (on this board lately) intellectual answer.
  17. How much do you think flexibility is lost? Like with the labrum and the rotator cuff, the return would appear to be dependent on how much movement is lost.
  18. Jimmy Key and Pedro Martinez come to mind. Key had a good year or two then retired. Martinez was ancient when he had his done. When he came back he did not last long. From a government research site [h=4]PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS:[/h]Thirty-three MLB pitchers with documented surgery to treat rotator cuff tears and 117 control pitchers who did not have documented rotator cuff tears were identified. [h=4]MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S):[/h]Major League Baseball pitching attrition and performance variables. [h=4]RESULTS:[/h]Players who underwent rotator cuff surgery were no more likely not to play than control players. Performance variables of players who underwent surgery improved after surgery but never returned to baseline preoperative status. Players who needed rotator cuff surgery typically were more experienced and had better earned run averages than control players. [h=4]CONCLUSIONS:[/h]Pitchers who had symptomatic rotator cuff tears that necessitated operative treatment tended to decline gradually in performance leading up to their operations and to improve gradually over the next 3 seasons. In contrast to what we expected, they did not have a greater attrition rate than their control counterparts; however, their performances did not return to preoperative levels over the course of the study. In other words, you can come back from the surgery but not as good. Flexibility is lost. Sort of like the same thing with a torn labrum for pitchers
  19. Again, it takes two to make a deal. If you can't see that by following where people sign I guess i will have to accept what you can't observe.
  20. Jairo Perez? Romero? From your free agent list there would be a clue to say there is no competition out there.
  21. 22 years ago. Proves my point about how often it occurs. Also note that with Anderson, Erickson and Tapani there was some semblance of a pitching staff with a future.
  22. There is a reason Collabello has only played a few games at 3b and none for an organization that really needs one. Expected miracles abound on Christmas.
  23. You expect a miracle? Check back through the annals of free agency. What top of the rotation starter has ever signed with a mid market team at the bottom of the standings? Offer outrageous sums you say? See Gil Meche.
  24. Open your eyed up some more. What front line pitcher has ever signed with a mid market last place team. Write all the articles you want bemoaning the spending. The reality you choose to ignore is that it takes two willing parties to make a contract. Sanchez used the Cubs to get the contract out of Detroit. The trade for Shields by KC is something the Twins could not pull of because they do not have the major league ready prospects to deal that KC did. Considering the Twin's needs this did not set up to be a good free agent class. No free agent help for the MI (Steven Drew as a defensive player was a negative, .250 as a hitter, 10 mill) What free agent pitcher other than Grienke was actually a number one starter? Sanchez and Dempster were used as number two. Marcum a three. The depth of the free agency this year was in bottom of the order starters. Precisely what you are complaining about them spending money on. see any of the thousand comments on Correia. Look back through the historical free agent signing. Top of the rotation pitchers do not sign with losing mid market teams they have no connection to. So is it that you expect a miracle to happen or what?
