  1. I don't understand not giving Stewart credit for his current tools regardless of the competition he has played. He has a perfect pitchers frame and is insanely athletic. His fastball consistently sits in the 92-94 and can hit 97 with good downward plane. Has an already plus slider with two more pitches that look to be big league average. Yeah, he doesn't have polish, but how many pitchers regardless of level have two already plus pitches and two that are average? Not very many.
  2. If I was going to make an official list it might be different but this is from off the top of my head: 1) Buxton 2) Sano 3) Stewart 4) Meyer 5) Rosario 6) Berrios 7) Kepler 8) Thorpe 9) Pinto 10) May 11) Polanco 12) Harrison 13) Gonsalves 14) Eades 15) Walker 16) Santana 17) Jorge 18) Romero 19) Goodrum 20) Minier
  3. Alex Meyer looked pretty good tonight. 5 innings, 63 pitches, no hits, 6Ks and one BB. Fastball 94-98 and worked mostly around 96-97. Very impressive. Note: Meyer actually faced three more batters. Went 5 2/3, gave up a hit, and struck out one more. Hit 97 on his 76th and final pitch. Longest outing of the fall league for any pitcher.
  4. Kazmir (2 year deal), Hughes (1 year deal with incentives and a second year option), trade for Ryan Dempster (Red Sox want to move him). Spend big next year on Bailey.
  5. While numerous prove to be quite effective a majority don't. That's fine. That is what free agency is. The problem is when fans, on message boards, here, don't like specific free agents people act like we don't want the Twins to spend money. We just don't want them to spend money on certain players. It is nothing more than our personal opinions.
  6. I'm really warming up to the idea of signing Kazmir. Lefty with upside that won't require anything more than a 2 year deal. If he busts it won't hurt the franchise. Also, I really like the outside the box thinking on Billingsly. Personally, I kind of want the Twins to trade for Dempster. Should be cheap (prospect wise), has some upside, and if he is pitching well at the deadline could bring back a few assets.
  7. I fail to see what this has to do with anything. Last year I wanted the Twins to sign Grienke, Sanchez, or Jackson. I'm all for the Twins spending money but I just don't like the crop of players. I rather them try to make a trade.
  8. Or maybe the argument against spending big now is some of us don't see anyone worth spending big on? I'm all for spending big money but not on this sorry bunch of free agents. I just don't see the love affair with Santana/Jimenez.
  9. I'm all for the Twins spending money but this FA group (especially the pitching side) is garbage. I rather the front office be creative with trying to fix things than just throwing money at it.
  10. A 17 year old lefty who can peak out at 95 is definitely a top 10 system talent. There are so few of them. Here is Ben Badler's (BaseballAmerica) take on if Thorpe will be a future big league starter: "Definitely a starter. If had been born in the United States, he'd be a first-round pick. Actually, he'd be just starting his senior year of high school, so he wouldn't even be eligible until the 2014 draft, but I already like him better than some of the arms who went at the end of the first round this year."
  11. They have Kolten Wong and Oscar Tavares so I doubt they would want Arcia or Rosario. I just don't see a match between these two teams.
  12. For those of you only want the Twins to draft a college pitcher here is Christopher Crawford's top college pitcher list: Top 14 for ?14: College Pitchers |
  13. Two things I enjoyed from both articles: 1) Meyer's fastball has AVERAGED 98.6 mph. Averaged! While yes it is a small sample size it is still insane. 2) Meyer is a substitute teacher. Awesome.
  14. Mayo and Callis over at mlb.com picked which team they each thought had the best farm system. Callis went with the obvious answer the Astros while Mayo.....well he does what Mayo does and picked the pirates for arguments sake. Last week he picked Bryant over Sano as the best 3B prospect in the game even though he has Sano ranked higher. Here is a link to his article on why the pirates have the best farm: Pipeline Perspectives: Pittsburgh Pirates have baseball's top farm system | MLB.com: News
  15. Eades is one of the most interesting Twins prospects to me. His "massive" 15.2 innings after an insanely long college season mean zero to me. If can add some more strength with professional trainers and figure out if he wants to throw a slider or a curve, instead of a slurve, he could be a steal. He was a top 20 draft prospect for most the year and ended in the top 35 of a lot of lists.
  16. Thanks for first hand account. Always enjoy reading them.
  17. Chris Crawford released his top 14 HS position player list, probably the one most fans who want a college arm care least about, and here is what he had to say about the class. "On paper, this is a better class of high-school hitters than last year to start the year, with more quality at the top and quantity of guys that could go early as well. In particular it’s a much better middle-infield class, though last year was among the worst I’ve seen in my time doing this. It’s a bit light in terms of left-handed bats — and there’s more volatility in this group than last year — but I see enough offensive upside in the prep bats to at least partially make up for the lack of quality and quantity on the college side to start the year." His next will be college pitchers but tell then here is his HS position player list. Lots of interesting talent. Top ?14 for 14: High School Hitters |
  18. Holmes has really come on strong and I'm really starting to like him. He pitched today and sat in the 92-95 range. Callis gunned one pitch at 97 last week which is pretty impressive this late in the year. As kab said he also has more than just a above average fastball.
  19. Holmes pitched today at the World Wood Bat Association WC and here is Jim Callis' report on him: Pitching for the Evoshield Canes, Holmes worked the first four innings of a 1-0 win over the Ontario Blue Jays. The right-hander was very efficient, throwing 36 of 49 pitches for strikes. He averaged 92 mph with his fastball and topped out at 97. The life on his fastball and his ability to locate it where he wanted were just as impressive. A Florida recruit, Holmes also worked effectively with a slider that sat at 80-81 mph. While his frame looks a little shorter and thicker than his listed 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, he's strong and doesn't throw with a lot of effort. His coach didn't make any fans among the many observers when he had Holmes intentionally walk Ontario's top 2014 prospect, outfielder Gareth Morgan, in the first inning. While most prospects are gassed right now from throwing all summer Holmes can still reach back and hit 97 (highest I have heard him throw). Pretty impressive. 20. Kolek, Holmes, and Aiken are all fighting for the top HS pitching spot. Kolek has the fastball that hits 100. Holmes had an amazing summer and shows a chance to have 3 plus pitches. Aiken is a projectable lefty and who doesn't like them? Should be an interesting battle to see who goes first for the HS arms.
  21. Chris Crawford helped with Law's list. Here are his, FREE, top college hitters and top HS pitchers lists. HS pitchers: Top 14 for ?14: High School Pitchers | College Hitters: Top 14 for ?14: College Hitters |
  22. att Garrioch at minorleagueball has started to release basic reports on top draft specs. Here are the 5 he has done already: Carlos Rodon: 2014 MLB Draft Profile: Carlos Rodon, LHP, N.C. State - Minor League Ball Jeff Hoffman: 2014 MLB Draft Profile: Jeff Hoffman, RHP, East Carolina - Minor League Ball Tyler Kolek: 2014 MLB Draft Profile: Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd, TX - Minor League Ball Tyler Beede: 2014 MLB Draft Profile: Tyler Beede, RHP, Vanderbilt - Minor League Ball Treat Turner: 2014 MLB Draft Profile: Trea Turner, SS, N.C. State - Minor League Ball
  23. Here is the top 5. 1. Carlos Rodon, LHP | N.C. State Owner of perhaps the best amateur's slider in recent memory, Rodon is a power lefty with present stuff and a strong track record of missing bats (184 strikeouts in 132 innings last spring). He brings ace potential to a draft that lacks much of that kind of impact. 2. Jeff Hoffman, RHP | East Carolina He popped for scouts in the Cape Cod League this summer, moving up boards with a very sudden velocity spike that jumped him ahead of almost all other college arms, but he has never shown the kind of dominant performance that Rodon has, and has to show he can hold this stuff for a full season. 3. Alex Jackson, C | Rancho Bernardo HS (San Diego) He’s more likely to end up in right field than behind the plate, but Jackson has elite bat speed and above-average power potential to all fields. 4. Jacob Gatewood, SS | Clovis (Calif.) HS Boasting enormous raw power, Gatewood has one of the highest upsides among prep hitters this year, but has to show he's got the hit tool to make the power play and will likely end up at third base in pro ball. 5. Braxton Davidson, OF | T.C. Roberson HS (Asheville, N.C.) Davidson may have the most offensive upside of any hitter in the class, thanks to a plus hit tool and the ability to drive the ball to all parts of the ballpark. The next 5 are pitchers (4 of 5 are highschool pitchers). Kolek is 8, as mike said Turner is 15, and 18 is Beede.
  24. Also, Buxton is the third youngest position player in the AFL and is coming off his first pro season. The kid has a future.
  25. Darren Wolfson tweeted: Terry Ryan confirmed to me the he would sacrifice his 2nd rd pick to sign a FA. Still seems like a long shot. Maybe Ervin Santana.
